BM Cinema Camera - low light test Barcelona

Hi Everyone

Check out a 4 minute film shot totally on the Blackmagic Cinema Camera last week in Barcelona:

The filming in Barcelona began as a series of low light tests to see what could be done with the RAW 2.5K recording which the camera provides. I edited the footage into a 4 minute video as I'm interested to see the shots in the context of an edited piece. Too much test footage makes one stare at images and forget the images are there to tell a story. The night out in Barcelona shows what can be achieved, filming in the darkest of circumstances – the type of scenes that commonly be found in any feature film ie restaurants, bars, walking down the street.

This is a rough and ready set of camera tests edited into a coherent story. Nothing but available light was used to film by.

Three versions of the movie are included: combination graded & ungraded; graded version of the movie; ungraded version.

Note: my grading abilities are limited. I used DaVinci Resolve to bring in the raw footage, set and tweak exposure, and output to ProRes.

Lovely. Would love to see it REC 709 on my TV, though! I'm very interested in the perceived grainularity of the video noise. Still looks very film-like to me.

Why was this filmed at ISO 200?
Does it make any difference because it´s raw anyway?
You just overexposed two stops because the screen looked darker (kind of a ISO 200 LUT)

Pure handheld or a rig?

Stabilize in post?

And most importantly what Mic were you using?

The sound seems useable so I'm guessing its not the internal one. This is one of the first clips I've seen with any actual sound. Sorry for all the questions but I would really appreciate it if you could answer them. I registered so I could ask you them.

Sound in this video is quite bad. I don't know if it was set up to 100%, and at some moments it clips and distorts but the rest sound good to me

Quite impressive what you can do in those situations without anyone doing any lighting. It really deals well with the range of light in your scenes. And many thanks to the camera op for not giving us a bunch of 'shaky cam'. In 'off-the-cuff' situations like that I would expect much worse.

Depends on the cameraman.

1. It sounds fine for what it is, but a controlled set must always have sync sound.
2. Lighting-wise, God is the best, fastest and cheapest gaffer around, but if this were a movie, I'd call the crew lazy for not lighting it.
3. This video again proves the versatility of the BMCC and its apparent ability as a decent doc cam.
4. Looks like film to me. I can't wait to put it on a real set.

It could be just be that my eyes are getting used to the detail in BMCC footage, but it seems that in this movie it's slightly less resolution than the stuff I've seen from John and Marco (OneRiverMedia).

I'm actually just wondering if this is something others are seeing aswell or if it's just me (my eyes aren't the most well trained)

Could it be it's shot wide open?
It didn't get sharpened in post?

Nonetheless, really a test I was happy to get to see, keep up the good work!

A lot was handheld and some was off a tripod.

Stabilize in post?

No stabilizing in post.

Mic was completely the built in mic. Nothing else was used.
