Ultrascope via Thunderbolt to Mini-Display port on MBP 2010

PostSat Nov 17, 2012 8:39 am

Can anyone confirm if Ultrascope will work by connecting a Thunderbolt cable from the BMD Cinema Camera directly into the mini-display port on a MBP 2010 13" laptop?

If not, can I run it into the firewire 800 port using a Thunderbolt to firewire adaptor?

Thanks.

Works on my 17" MBP 8,3 model.
Doubt there's any chance of it working on a FW800/TB converter.

No to both. You can go Mini DisplayPort into Thunderbolt, but not the other way around.

Also, the FireWire protocol cannot host a Thunderbolt device, so attaching the Thunderbolt adapter to a non-Thunderbolt Mac through its FireWire connection will not provide that Mac with Thunderbolt capabilities.

Thank you for your responses.

Does anyone know of any way to get Ultrascope from the BD Cinema Camera working on a non-thunderbolt equipped MBP?

Would it be possible if I incorporated the BD mini-monitor or the BD converter? Or is this whole notion of compatibility simply a non-starter, with the only solution being the purchase of a new laptop?

Thanks again.

I'm 90% sure it HAS to be TB native.

This is correct. Thunderbolt is part of an intel chipset. So, if your computer does not have thunderbolt, there is no way to add it. There is more to thunderbolt than just adding it on top of a system. Thunderbolt is part of the system at its core level.
