URSA 4.6K Footage

PostMon Apr 13, 2015 4:05 pm

Hi, on this page you can find some footage I shot with the URSA 4.6K.

https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/produc ... kmagicursa

Couple of things about the URSA 4.6k footage for some 'background'. I shot this on a prototype so things were still in development and changing. This was also just me shooting solo with the URSA like previously and is "home movie" type stuff intended to be a quick first look. In fact, last time with my URSA beta video i had Danelle helping me to carry some gear but this time it was just me shooting some friends and around the city - definitely no crew or anything like that. For the kitchen shots and the drumming i set up some lights, everything else is 100% natural light, not even bounce. Grading on this video is purposely VERY simple. It's really just a quick setting of white balance, then contrast and saturation. I didn't tweak individual colours or even shift colours with Lift/Gamma/Gain because i wanted to show the great natural colour "out of the box". This part is my personal opinion and obviously now that i work for BMD people will take it with a grain of salt (to be expected), but personally i think we've made a BIG improvement on colour - colour that i already really liked which led me to first purchase the BMCC as a customer. I think the improvement in colour is just as big as the improvement on dynamic range. With DR, so far in my experience i think it's safe to say that whatever you rate the Pocket Camera to be, add roughly 2 stops. 1 stop in the highlights, and another stop in the shadows. I can't wait for people to get this and go shoot some incredible footage with it!

Thank you! Looks amazing. I wanted more DR more than anything. I'll look forward to upgrading my turret as soon as the upgrade becomes available. I'm shooting a short film in June that I'd love to have the new sensor for, but I'm guessing the turret upgrades won't be available by then?

I already thought that you have shot that video CaptainHook :D

BM was really listening and this camera seems to be a real winner.
What about the black sunspot? Is this sensor immune or did you have to retouch it in Resolve?
What about the dynamic range when changing from global to rolling shutter?
Saying "Thx for help!" is not a crime.

You're telling me these colors are right out of camera?? (Minus wb,st,ct). That's incredible. Absolutely amazing. Hands down better than any colors so far out of these cameras.

Does this mean there's no black sun?

edit: does this new color extend to the mini as well?

Can't wait to see more examples of the improved dynamic range.

When I saw 15 stops, I was like :o  well let's see if it's not marketing that's talking because you know we can do independent test if the manufacturer is miscounting the numbers.

Capt' I hope you release more test footage, I am pretty impressed to see how cinematic the footage is! I mean the camera is in capable hands but wow! :o

Any downloadable full res footage???

Please...

1) No more pink sun problem?

2) What is tha ASA/ISO of the camera? How does it perform in lowlight compared to the "old" 4K sensor ?

3) Any Prores footage for us to play with? Even some RAW stills would be great

This camera will easily go for 10 years before it needs replacement. 15 stops at 4.6K, and 120fps, I can't imagine needing anything more than that for anywhere close on the horizon.

Hey Captainhook, thank you for the post and the video. I just wanted you to know your opinion do matter here on this forum for a lot of us, whether you worked for BMD or not, your work speaks for itself.
Now that i buttered you up :D Can you please tell us a little more about this sensor, so far, if i'm reading between the lines correctly, it seems to have better low light capabilities, since you used mostly natural light i'm guessing you shot at 800 ISO ? I Also saw at the end of your video the compression was 4:1 which indicates to me you have more compressed raw options coming in a future update? If the Ursa is shooting at 150fps in hd, is it possible we may get at least 180fps-200fps in HD or maybe in compressed Raw on this new sensor.

1. Native ISO?
2. Highest frame rate possible?

I too am wondering about the ISO range on the new 4.6K sensor, and if you can still shoot 2K using the full real estate of the sensor in case you are shooting something for web/small devices/etc and not in just windowed mode (which is how I understand the new sensor will do high speed past 60fps).

It will be more than enough. Canon and Zeiss primes are Full frame stills formats, the sensor on the new 4.6k is still s35 (aps-c ish) in size. Your 18-35 should cover it too.

Resolution and sensor size are not the same.

Scott, the 4.6K sensor's diagonal is just over 29mm (4608x2592) so you really need a lens that covers 30mm. Now if you shoot at a lower resolution, like ProRes UHD, your coverage requirements are identical to the 4K sensor since the photosites on both sensors are 5.5 microns.

When you try to categorize the 4.6K sensor, the active sensor area has 'crop' of only 1.42x so it's finally a true Super35 sensor. There are a few recording modes that take advantage of that extra width or height, and some like UHD and HD that are the same 1.70x crop as on the original 4K sensor in URSA and the BMPC4K. I really like the new shooting options which even include 6K in a 2.4:1 aspect ratio if you are using a 2x anamorphic lens/adapter (3072x2560)!

Yes indeed, we get true S35 with this iteration.

The Cafe and Field shots in Hook's footage told me as much as I need to know... it's nice to see an OBVIOUS upgrade path in the visuals. Can't say that for every company.

Also, Rick, I bet you liked that news about the Global/Rolling switch. =] Another thread.

Kholi, I sure did!

That shutter was my only real concern when we saw the banner going up for the URSA MINOR. I just didn't want to lose the global shutter option and didn't want to lose dynamic range. For me HFR is not as important as keeping the global shutter so I can make that trade-off. I'm so conventional and old school.

This URSA MINOR camera was made for me! I'll share it with a million other operators, but I feel it was built for me. I can carry it all day! Saving over 5Kg is a lot of weight. I almost cried when I read Grant's email just after 9 am Pacific time. CaptainHook's 'home movie' answers the question of image quality and perfectly illustrates the beauty of 15 stops. Love the recording options, perfect. Just figuring out tonight how to pay for it with some accessories to be determined.

Brent, to me, the fact that the URSA MINOR only weighs 5 lbs is one of its best features. Sure URSA is a better camera in many ways, except for the weight! I'll leave that URSA to younger, stronger, more experienced operators. I feel 11 pounds lighter already while sitting here in my armchair just contemplating that MINOR wonder.

I pre ordered the full URSA, then saw the mini was 5lbs, and switched. The 11lbs difference is just to big to pass up. My gimbal can take this mini, so that makes it a no brainer.

It's again another camera for another purpose. Ursa Major is the no-compromise camera to be sitting on a solid stand, while Ursa Minor seems well suited for more specialised jobs that need a smaller/lighter camera while keeping the same overall concept.

Pretty sure most of what hook shot was 800. Did you see any FPN in here ?

I think this sensor, being a different manufacturer to the 4K sensor we all know, is less likely to have those issues.

It would be great to see more examples, preferably with no luts, but a colorchecker primary correction.
