Hi Fusioners!

PostSat Apr 04, 2015 11:02 pm

Hi guys,

just wanted to say hi as a fellow Fusioner from icy Norway - and spread some love regarding the Fusion suite and what Blackmagic are doing to push this excellent piece of software to the masses - and hopefully, regain some traction vs. Nuke.

Im a long time user of Fusion ( since 4.5, 10years ish ) and it`s really nice to see new users pick up Fusion and start playing around with it.

I think it`s a real positive thing that Blackmagic aquired Fusion and hopefully we will see future updates and bug fixes more often, and also implementation of new features.

I am also doing a personal project these days, all GPU rendered ( Redshift via.Maya ) and - offcourse - all comp in Fusion. Im doing the last comp work nowadays to complete the 2min10sec runtime in total.

Go Blackmagic and Fusion! :-)

Oh. And the update side, i hope we are seeing updates on -

- More solid image loaders
- Improved linear workflow
- Deep workflow improvements
- TAB add tools ( a little detail that might be nice to new users from Nuke / other packages )
- Custom nav keys in 3D view ( Maya and other 3D packages default? )

Various WIP clips -

You can remap the hotkeys yourself. Tab is very useful for navigating the tool controls, but if you don't care about that, you can set it with the Hotkey Manager.

EDIT: Neat. If the tool controls have focus, Tab still works fine as before, but otherwise you can run the AddTool script.

EDIT2: Whoops, I forgot you still want to use Tab in the viewers to cycle between preview controls. So I'll be changing this back.

Thanks for mentioning this tip! I had not changed it thinking it would affect the tab to change focus behavior but it still works fine. My spacebar will be getting lonely from now on.

Thanks for the tab-tip!

It doesnt bother me though - more and more apps converges into making tab a default search / add tools way of doing things, and I think it`s a simple and easy way to further make Fusion more familiar to new users.

Blazej Floch - thanks! Close to releasing the project! :-)

Doing last minute comp work on the last remaining shots - timelapse for those interested!

Is it possible to work with deep data ( as a way to merge f.ex. smokecards instead of using Z-depth ) in Fusion? If so, how do I set it up? Have`nt really looked into it earlier, but it would really be useful on some specific shots..

Are they just cards for the smoke? Or do you have 3D smoke datasets? If it's just cards, then you can at best do a 3D comp with the cards whether or not you have deep compositing available (which you don't).

Hi,

just simple cards comped via 3D imageplanes / 3D camera exported via Alembic / .MA from Maya.

Im using z-depth to comp the planes in front/back of objects and it works OK though needs alot of tweak to get the masking just right - even more so when the camera has a lot of movement in the shot.

I would like to use depth-info pr.pixel the create hold-outs for my cards - I know I could do it in Nuke, but I love Fusion to much to let go! Hehe..

Why aren't you just generating the mattes from the 3D objects in the Render3D though? No need for depth at all.

I could do that - sure.

But that way Ill end up using a fair amount of time ( and render time ) getting holdouts out, and Ill be also somewhat limited Vs. depth info pr.pixel so I can quickly throw stuff around in my 3D comp. in Fusion.

Far more flexible IMO.

Holdout mattes render in realtime, though. It's really not bad at all. And it's only 8 or 16 bits per pixel, which is a LOT less data than a full deep images. And the composite will run faster than realtime, which is a lot faster than a deep image composite.

Well,

getting my 3D scene from Maya over in Fusion would be a pain - using both Redshift proxies and Scene Assembly, and to be honest - its a quite dense scene.

But - thanks for the input! :-)

Does Redshift render out layered RPF?

If you render out deep images from Redshift, how much longer does it take to render, and how much larger are the files? I'm curious as I've never used Redshift.

Yup,

it support it - I can make som speed tests as Ive only just tapped into it.

On another note, Here`s the newly cut teaser ( 41sec ) for the full trailer ( 2min50sec )

Good to finally put final stuff out there after a mile long WIP period.. Phew.

Ive done all grade in Fusion as well - though might have to look into Resolve in the future.

:-)

Simple random timelapse footage - mixing liveaction / CG in Fusion.

The " Primatte " keyer did not work very good for me, ended up keying the footage in AE via " the evil " Keylight plugin from The Foundry.

Though, Ive got a tips to check out AKA for the keying so I can do it all in Fusion.

Oh. I would really like if it was possible to just buy a Studio version directly at the Blackmagic website and not go through local dealers and physical copies. Hm.

I've been following your work a lot since you do exactly what I'd like to do one day, and it always ends up with my jaw falling on the floor and breaking. The stuff you manage to pull off as an one man army is outstanding. And watching your high level, refined and efficient workflows is as much (if not more) fun as watching the result itself.

Hi Alf, it looks really good. Maybe you could share some of the greenscreenshots you were having trouble with, so we could try it out with Primatte. It's actually a pretty good keyer, and I've gotten pretty decent results with it. Of course your skill set is much higher than mine, but you'll never know.

Thanks guys!

Ludvik - checked out your site, alot of really nice work going on there. Thanks! :-)

Sander - Here`s a stillframe from one of the shots if you are interested in giving it a try. It may be that Im dumb "hehe..", but I find Primattes workflow lacking. Its great for getting a rough-and-simple key out there for use in proxies, but when for finals - I found Keylight a much better keyer / supresser overall. Will also try out the AKA fuse for Fusion.

Oh. I must add that keying footage is not my field though.

Just wondering - does Blackmagic have some sort of a development chart / todo / upcoming features / plans or whatever somewhere..?

I know porting it to the Mac has been a huge thing, but would be nice to have a sort of upcoming feature list / thingy to keep an eye one.

They wouldn't make something like that public. It's bad for sales and competitors would be all over it.

I'm not aware of this being discussed currently but if this does become something available through our site, there will be an announcement about it here on the forums.

I haven't been told of any timeframe for this but as mentioned above, we will have an announcement made here when it's ready.

Thanks Alf!!

Hope you're able to do many of these Fusion tutorial series. I learned little things here and there just from the 101 video. Would love to see how you set up some of your flows in all of the fast breakdown sections you've posted. Your project is an inspiration, and I hope you're able to help teach and share more of your knowledge of Fusion for this project.

cheers,

Ryan
