PostMon Feb 16, 2015 10:58 am

Nice! Just what the good doctor recommended.

Introducing the new Intensity Pro 4K, the easiest and highest quality way to capture video on your computer! Intensity Pro 4K has all the same great features of the original Intensity Pro capture card but now you also get Ultra HD and 1080p60 high frame rate support! Now you can capture Ultra HD images at up to 30 frames per second or 1080HD at an incredible 60 frames
per second! You can save files with or without compression and use it with the most popular Mac and Windows video software. Intensity Pro 4K also includes DaVinci Resolve Lite so you get a full capture and playback solution along with professional video editing and color grading, without having to buy any extra software!

Now we just have to wait to see how long it'll be before they are actually available. I talked to the UK distributor and they didn't even know it existed.

What's the different between Intensity Pro and decklink series?
Cause it seems that, if you only need HDMI Intensity pro is a far better choice than decklink do you guys agree?

My needing is to connect my Hackintosh Resolve System to my monitor for critical color workflow, I mainly use 2.5k raw so i was wondering on decklink mini monitor but if this new 4k does the job I will be more happy to actually see in UHD.

Also another question, does a general I/O card like this one require/use GPU power to work or it actually does itself the computation to display the output? Just to know if i will se a drop in performance by outputting 4k vs HD.

Also I will use Resolve instead of 3d out external box..will it work proper with this I/O card as it was supposed to work with decklink?

thank y'all!

The Decklink cards have a longer warranty, and support more frame-sizes/rates as well as having SDI.

As usual this is another device that is advertised as having a function but doesn't ship with it. I asked for confirmation that this card does actually do 10bit unlike the standard Intensity Pro, this was the reply from the BM product manager

Yes it does proper 10-bit YUV on capture and playback, proper 10-bit RGB on capture.

Deep Colour output will be in a later release.

I also asked when or if they were ever going to fix the Ultrastudio 4K V2 and give us the advertised higher framerate UHD settings as it's now been out for about 14-16 months, and I didn't get an answer.

Man I just bought a Decimator MD-HX a few weeks ago so I could record 1080p60 source to 1080p30.

I'm saddened its only supported in the new Intensity Pro 4K through PCI. Would have been nice to see 1080p60 come back for the Thunderbolt Shuttle. Hopefully they are still working on it.

I don't know whether to get this now or just stick with the conversion in the meantime.

With it being 4K I would have also thought that it will also output Rec2020 as well as just Rec70 stated in the tech specs. Maybe thats what they mean by Deep Colour will come later.

Very Interesting product to connect 10 bit UHD Monitor or TV.
Intensity Pro 4K:

Max Resolution: 3840x2160P 30
HDMI Video Sampling: RGB 4:4:4 in HD and YUV 4:2:2 in Ultra HD
HDMI Color Precision: 10-bit

Anyway "DeckLink 4K SDI" + "Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 4K" could be a good solution to connect a 4096x1260 10 bit monitor.

Decklink 4K SDI:

Max Resolution: 4096 x 2160p25
SDI Video Output: 1 x 10-bit SD/HD/2K/4K. Supports 6 Gb/s 4:2:2 and 3 Gb/s 4:4:4
Video Sampling: 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 (4K is 4:2:2)

Mini Converter SDI to HDMI 4K:

Max Resolution: 4096 x 2160p24
SDI Color Space: YUV and RGB
SDI Color Precision: 4:2:2 and 4:4:4
HDMI Color Space: YUV and RGB
HDMI Color Precision: 4:2:2 and 4:4:4

I think that with these solutions the color precision is limited to 4:2:2 in 4K but it should be 10 bit.

So, the New Intensity Pro 4K *does not* output 10bit HDMI?
Because we just bought one to use for 10bit output.

So I finally got my IP4k today and after some hassle with uncertified drivers and Win7 x64 I got it to work.

Runs very smooth in Premiere & After Effects and yes, it does have 10-bit via HDMI-Out (on a Eizo CS240).

Though I'm quite impressed with that little, cheap thing, I find it annoyingly loud. Is there any way to tone down the fan? The option in the BMD control panel is grayed out. And it always blows at 100%, no matter if I use the card or if I don't.

BMD could you maybe find a solution for this via driver update?

All BM devices that have a fan are loud, not sure why they can't use better quieter fans but for some reason they don't, and they all seem to have the greyed out fan option in the control panel as well.

If you need UHD, then you're out of luck. HD is RGB.

Has anyone here tried to switch the fan? It looks like, it could easily be replaced.

I suppose part of the problem would be that all small fans tend to be noisy if they have to run at high speed, so you would need to get one that is designed to give good airflow but at lower RPM.
It would make more sense for them to have a variable option so it slows down when not in use and speeds up if it starts to get hot.

Have you replaced a fan on a card like this yourself? Are the stock ones easy to remove? And I'd guess it's a 40x40x10 fan, right?

Do you think it's a proper solution to have a trusted monitoring for davinci? I wil grade my 2.5k and 4k raw on a Hackintosh system, external monitor will be up dreamcolor 27 or Eizo cx something..I will color manage using resolve and dispicalgui.

To me now seems a better choice the new intensity 4k than the decklink mini monitor..any suggestion?
Do I need any other hardware to support intensity of is everything I need?

If needed my system is:
Asus sabertooth x79
I74930k
Gtx980 g1 (so amazing, just one card allow me to do 18 blur node on 2.5k raw with real time playback
Yosemite

Will it work on this system?

Just encountered a 3rd party site with useful info on IP4K compatibility, early drivers experience, etc.

On this webpage, select the "Please read before ordering" tab.

It would be very nice if Blackmagic's support page for this card had the same level of detail...

I have heard back from the BM Product Manager in Australia with regards to the fan noise. They are aware of this and have said that it can be controlled in the firmware, and this will be added in an update, although no time-frame has been given on when this will be added, just 'soon'

Quick question:

The information on the page states that it will do HD and 4k.
But what about 2k? I got a 2048 x 1080 project and am looking forward to use this card to monitor while cutting with an HD-TV on Avid or Premiere CC. Will the card downscale the footage to normal HD (Black bars on the top & bottom) or will it stay in the resolution and crop parts of the image off (left & right)? Same question goes for a 4k project.

Or should I get the Decklink Mini Monitor and it will output everything in HD or won't it work with anything greater than HD (keep in mind, I only got an HD-TV connected)?

Greetings,
Robin.

I've yet another problem with the card's drivers.

It all ran smoothly until the new BMPCC drivers came along. I don't know why, but I had to delete the "Desktop Video" software, to be able to install the new camera software. It, obviously, deleted my Intensity's drivers with it and now I can't get it to work again. I've tried all the steps I did when I installed it for the first time, but no luck.

Why is updating software alyways this stupid with BMD and why can't they just put out signed drivers? I'm really upset about this, since I need to work on something ASAP.

*******
Finally got it working again. Weirdly by Windows' repair feature with all driver checks disabled. But PLEASE BMD, make this easier. Updating AND drivers.

Good Morning Everyone,

This is my first post (I apologise for the length) and it's nice to be here. I wish it were under better circumstances though that I introduce myself to the forum, but I did a search for "Noisy Fan" and wound up here.

I read the previous posts regarding the fans on the Intensity Pro 4K, so I'm aware that BM is "looking into it and a future fix is on the way". I just bought the card from B&H in New York City last night. I put the card in and before turning on the CPU I thought to myself: "How will I know if the card is working?" Well, shortly after the power button was pressed, I knew.

Folks, I have a custom rig with a Cooler Master Case that has 4 fans in the case alone. There is a fan on the Power Supply, the Nvidia K4000 GPU and over the Intel i7 4771. Thats 7 (SEVEN) fans in all before installing this card. The computer is actually located about 3 feet from me on top of my desk as I didn't want it on the floor. I have lived with it and worked with it there for just about a year. When that fan came on running at top speed and hitting a frequency that would make dogs run, I thought I would rip it out and return it to B&H today and find something else.

Since misery loves company and I see that I'm not the only one experiencing this, I will wait the next 12 days or so (though I know it is an extremely short amount of time for firmware updates) before returning my board to B&H as their return policy is, I believe, 14 days.

My needs at home are very simple. All I wanted was an efficient and inexpensive way to capture VHS and DVD to my computer. S-VHS was more than acceptable. I also wanted to be able to view my edits on an external monitor while editing in Premiere, Media Composer or Vegas Pro using SD and HD Canon 5D file based media. By the way, I also noticed in the pdf manual that was supplied on an SD Card in the box, that Sony Vegas Pro 9 is supported. I have Ver 13 so I'm concerned. Vegas is mentioned in BM's advertising, but interestingly no version number. The ultimate optimist that I am would like to think that Ver 9 and UP is supported. We'll see.

Lastly, I haven't even tested the card yet. Based on what I'm reading here, I may or may not even see a video signal. Fingers crossed and anxiously awaiting that fan speed update.

Thanks for your time and here's hoping for more positive posts.

If you only want the capture options you specified, get the fanless Intensity Pro, it will do all that you need.

I have replaced the fan on my IP4K now, I will be posting a youtube video soon of how to do it for anyone that is interested, but I genuinely believe that BMD will need to address this soon, the card is too loud for use if it is in the same room as humans.

See my reply in the other thread re the fans for the 4K, but when searching, look for fan and heatsinks for cooling the Northbridge chipset on motherboards, as they are typically 40mm, the same size as the heatsink-fan combo on the 4K.

Putting the Fan issues aside,

Thanks Peter for the advice. Over two days there were numerous emails back and forth between myself and Tech Support. Jim was amazing and hung in there until we got to the point where he felt it best to call in and be in front of my computer. If you're reading this - Thanks Jim!

So, after 45 minutes of being on hold, I finally got to speak with a wonderful lady who's name unfortunately escapes me. The office closed at 8pm Eastern Time and she stayed on the phone with me till almost 9pm!

After various uninstalls, re-installs and triple checking settings, we were not able to get my card to see video or hear audio. We used both Media Express 10.3.7 and 10.4. When either one launched with a VHS tape running and connected via RCA, no audio and only a blank screen in Media Express. At this point it was determined that the card I had was defective. Just for fun after the phone call, I then tried changing the settings to HD and changed the connection prefs in Media Utility to HDMI. I plugged in the HDMI output of my Canon 5D Mark II for the fun of it and... no joy.

So sadly, I returned it to B&H yesterday.

Next? I don't know really.
I was considering the BM Decklink Studio 4K for $565.25 at B&H.
Or maybe the BM Decklink SDI 4K for $280.25 also at B&H.

The Intensity Pro 4K was the perfect solution for my needs, aside from the really short Breakout Cable as well. The aforementioned cards have SDI which I really have no need for. So I guess I'll take the nice Lady on the phone support advice and wait for any updates on the IP 4K and try it again.

Thanks again folks.

I agree. I just replaced an Intensity Pro with an Intensity Pro 4K and the noise is awful. I wrote to BM today to ask for full refund because it's driving me nuts. My wife even came into the studio yesterday and commented on how noisy my computer was. One tiny fan and it's louder than the combined noise of all the fans in my other 4 studio computers combined. That's quite an achievement BM.

This needs to be fixed now. I work on projects where the sound is critical. Do BM not realise that sound is an integral part of editing, as important as the visual aspects? How can they be serious about video and use fans this cheap and nasty? It should not be up to the user to fix this problem with heat sinks, thermal paste or buying replacement fans as others have suggested. I'm a video editor not a mechanic.

Everyone that has the fan issue, make sure you log it with official BMD support.
It can be controlled via firmware, so the more people that log it as a requirement with support, the faster it is likely to be addressed.

I've just had a new system built with one of these in. At first I thought I had a dodgy power supply as the noise was coming from down the bottom where only the PSU and the Intensity 4k was. I didn't think for a second that it could be the intensity as it so small but how wrong was I?

The noise this thing kicks out is absolutely ridiculous. Did the engineers do all their testing with earphones on? How this was been allowed to be released in this state is a bit of a joke to be honest.

For now I've had to take it out as it is that loud. I've got 3 x 140mm fans, 2 x 120mm fans and two GPUs in my case and I can't hear a thing but with the Intensity in there it sounds like it's going to take off.

I could change the fan like others have suggested but I don't see why I should have to spend more money and void my warranty just because blackmagic have been a) too cheap to put a decent fan in there or b) too slack to sort out their firmware to change the speed of the fan.

This has been a known problem for weeks but still no fix. After having phoned support yesterday I was told the problem has been escalated so we can expect an update sometime 'soon'. Unfortunately soon is not good enough as this card is going no-where near my system until it is fixed.

This card should not have been released in it's current state.

I was told 'soon' by BM's product manager in early March, so I wouldn't hold your breathe

The latest Desktop Video software fixes the fan... It came out last Wednesday. I can't believe I've been suffering all this last week when there was a fix. It feels like hearing silence for the very first time. Beautiful.

Wow, it does? How? Or just when it's loaded into your OS?

Funny enough, I just came back from vacation and tried to install 10.4.1. It crashed my system and I can't get it to run. So I replaced the fan.

It's a bit louder than expected, but WAY better than before and a more "calm, pleasant" noise. So here's hoping my card doesn't burn. ;)

With the 10.4.1 drivers the fan is virtually silent even at start up. If they crash your system then that would imply you have an issue somewhere as I've got it installed on over 20 systems so far and none of them crash

Yeah, too bad I couldn't get it to run. I would have saved me from voiding my warranty.

And it's odd I couldn't get it to run, since my system usualy runs very well. Only with BMD software it seems to have a problem...

Well, now it's quiet. ;)

Hi Adam, I think you are the most qualified person to answer a couple of questions about the Intensity Pro 4K.

When this produce was announced I thought it was the answer to all my prayers. It promised to capture video from "legacy" tape formats without the need for expensive Time Base Correctors. I have been using a Matrox MXO2 Mini since 2010 and it have served me well as a playback device, but capturing from tape have been a nightmare. Apparently all modern capture cards have the same problem; they require a solid signal from the source. So if there are "dropouts" and sync problems on the source (very common with old tapes), they stop the capturing process. A huge "PITA".

Is the Intensity Pro 4k the product they claim to be? How come there are so many bad reviews and low star ratings?

Most of the bad reviews are down to poor drivers at the outset. The latest 10.4.1 drivers still don't fix all the problems though.
With the latest drivers the fan is virtually silent which was one of the big complaints, it now also sees RGB input sources such as PS4's and Xbox ones which was another of the big complaints. The auto-detect also seems to work a lot better now.
We've only tested on PC's, but at the moment I seem to still have 3 issues with the card.

1. With the last update they seem to have broken support in Adobe software, so you either have to use earlier drivers which puts the fan noise back or wait for the fix (BM have told me they have fixed the issue and will release new drivers 'shortly')

2. I get no auto-detection of UHD sources through HDMI. HD sources work fine just not UHD. The same sources work fine on other BM 4K cards in the same system so it's definitely down to the drivers and the IP4K.

3. On the systems we've tested we still find that the card works better if it's put in a PCI-e slot that uses bus-lanes that go through the chip-set and not through the CPU. So on a Z97 board if it goes through the chip-set we only seem to have the problems mentioned above, but when going through the CPU bus-lanes although the card no longer drops out like it used to I find the auto-detect doesn't seem to work. If the software you use allows you to set your capture format that seems to work, but it no longer auto-detects the source.

As to the built in TBC. It does seem to work, but is no replacement for a quality TBC. It can handle my tapes that I couldn't get to work before, but if your tapes are really old and degraded I suspect it will still have issues.

Thank you Adam for your detailed and honest answer. For the price of the Intensity Pro 4k, I would be happy if it a least help me with my old tape preservation projects. It doesn't hurt that it is 4k capable, but most of my projects are 1080p. I like the fact that it supports 1080@60fps. I think it is time for BMD to add that feature to all of their capture and playback products, including the UtraStudio Minis.

The Matrox Ventura Capture software looks silly and unfinished, but at least you can restore a Digitazing operation with just the click of one button. Hopefully Media Express is that fast and simple.

Hello, wondering if anybody can recommend a good fan/heatsink to replace the very loud fan in my Intensity Pro 4k? I am running version 10.5.2 but still encounter this problem. How can BM ship such a good product with such a horrible fan?! Definitely a buzz kill! I am in the US and would prefer to purchase parts through a large retailer like Amazon or Newegg. Also, does this replacement require the use of thermal paste?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

When you installed the 10.5.2 drivers did it update the firmware? I've not found any of the fans to be noisy since 10.4.1 (I think that's the one they updated the firmware to slow the fan down) and I've installed around 50-60 IP4K's

Before updating to the latest 10.5.3 drivers I had difficulty capturing audio above 16bps in a few different programs. I thought this was odd because the card is advertised for 24bps audio. But with the new drivers it seems to work, although the capture option is listed as 32bps. Did anyone else have this issue?

One other problem I noticed was no option or ability to capture 480p NTSC in RGB 8bit 4:4:4 or RGB 10bit 4:4:4 video. It seems to only allow YUV. Could anyone else confirm this?
