Resolve 12 crashes with DNxHD footage.

PostMon Sep 21, 2015 4:37 pm

Hello community,

Just started using Resolve 12 and have problem with DNxHD footage. My files comes from Panasonic GX-7 (I know it's a toy camera) and are natively AVCHD with AC-3 audio in MTS container. I've converted them to DNxHD with ClipToolz Convert V2 but unfortunately Resolve 12 sees only audio stream in those conversions, and when I try to play it Resolve crashes. Tried with different conversion settings and different source footage (resolutions, fps) with no effect. There is no such problem with ProRes and it plays fine, but for some reason conversion is 3-4 times slower than for DNxHD.

It's under Windows 10. I've put sample files in my Dropbox along with screenshots of Resolve (with metadata visible) and hope somebody will be able to help me. Here's the link:
Code: Select all
http://www.dropbox.com/sh/f8h5vgwljvsty6b/AAAcDaRBvE0RWJYxESxC8yLka?dl=0

P.S. Just checked Resolve logs and see some errors there:

Code: Select all
[0x00001df0] | IO                   | ERROR | 2015-09-21 19:25:10,101 | Codec (AVdn) not Found in Repository
[0x00001df0] | IO                   | ERROR | 2015-09-21 19:25:10,102 | Failed to open video file <E:\Videos\test\DNxHD.mov> for decoding, error: <Can't open file for reading.>
[0x00001df0] | IO                   | ERROR | 2015-09-21 19:25:10,102 | Failed to read video track information from file <DNxHD.mov> in E:\Videos\test, track 0: codec DUMMY is not supported

I don't know why it can't find codecs as I installed Avid Codecs LE 2.3.9 and DNxHD files are played properly in QT player.

The DNxHD and ProRes files both work properly here on Resolve 12 on Windows 10 and OSX 10.10.5. Both have video and audio.

The MTS file does not have audio on either system. We are aware of MTS audio issues in various scenarios.

I don't know why you would not see video on your system with the DNxHD file. What type of CPU do you have?

Hi,

It's Phenom II 965. Please look at Resolve log in my first post - contains something like this

"| ERROR | 2015-09-21 19:25:10,101 | Codec (AVdn) not Found in Repository"

So it's probably the cause.

The reason I asked about CPU type is that when DNxHR support was added to the DNx package, it broke compatibility with AMD CPUs.

We don't test or support Resolve with AMD CPUs.

This issue was supposedly fixed, but I wonder if perhaps there are still some AMD CPU families that are having issues.

Verify that you have the DNx file on your system.

It's in this location:

C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\DaVinci Resolve\DNxHR-ssse3.dll

If that file is missing, you would see the issue you see. If some AMD CPU's are still an issue, you would see what you see.

It's a shame that AMD is not supported. Checked it and DNxHR-ssse3.dll is in my system but it still have this issue. But maybe I can use older file without DNxHR support? If so then where can i find it?

The only option you have there is to go back to Resolve 11.1.3, which is still available in the BMD DaVinci Resolve Support area.

When Resolve first started supporting DNxHR, in version 11.2, most if not all AMD CPU equipped systems would crash on launch of Resolve.

In Resolve 11.3.1, a new DNx package is used which fixes that issue, and should allow DNxHR support on AMD CPUs. So I'm sort of surprised that your system is not working, but on the other hand, there are several families of AMD CPU's, and since we don't test them at all to start with, we don't have good knowledge on specifically what works and what doesn't.

So Resolve 11.1.3 may fix your issue, or perhaps that version won't work with your CPU either. If it does work, it will only be with DNxHD files, and not any DNxHR files.

Hi Dwaine,

Thanks for your reply. In such case I'll stick with Resolve 12 and ProRes. Only drawback I see is much longer conversion time from AVCHD to ProRes, but I can live with it. I don't know if there is no performance penalty in Resolve when working in ProRes against DNxHD, but have no choice anyway.

Having the same issue with AMD CPU. So, no DNxHD support for my good ol PC in the Resolve-future?

Verify you have the DNx file on your system, as described above.

If you do, and you don't see DNxHD or DNxHR files in the Media Storage area, then it would seem your AMD CPU is not supported by the DNx package.

I use an overclocked amd 960T and can confirm that dnxhd doesn't work any more, I have tried every workaround. it used to work in previous versions. I have the said file on my system. As I was planning to upgrade to an FX 8320, which supports sse 4.1, I would appreciate if any other user with this cpu, can confirm that dnxhd is supported, and more specifically if you can roundtrip from avid mc and with which version.

For me only working fix was to change Phenom to i7. Didn't do it for Resolve alone, but now it works at least.

me again,
so there is no confirmation if newer AMD cpus are working with DNxHR in Resolve 12?
I would update the AMD cpu but I have no idea if I won't be left with the same issue. I don't even know who to ask, Blackmagic, Avid, AMD?

Any help much appreciated!

I thinks I have the same problem.
I can't see and export any DNXHD in resolve 12.
It work in Resolve 11
I have the .dll file that you mention above.

But I have a 1 year old GeForce GT740.
Is it normal???

Looking at that other thread and going by the CPU you state over there your CPU doesn't support SSSE3 as it's too old. Your CPU is from 2009 and SSSE3 wasn't introduced into AMD CPU's until 2011
