Output Blanking & Color page Sizing: black on black

PostWed Dec 30, 2015 9:54 pm

Hi,

(Resolve 12)
When using Color menu > Output Blanking > e.g. 2:35
and Color page > Sizing > e.g. Tilt

there is no visual aid that warns me when the image gets tilted slightly too far
because the 2:35 bands are black and the Viewer area is now also black.

Can a visual aid be set? Maybe set the Viewer area to white i.s.o. black where there is no more image?

Thanks,
Sam

grab a clip that does not have any color
right clip and export an 3d lut call it XXXX
open with a text editor and you will see that the first row of numbers is
0.00000 0.00000 0.00000
change it to
1.00000 0.00000 0.00000

now this lut will shoot to bright red anything that is approaching 0, you can then check your edges (if you see poking red you have to re-frame it.)

I would like to see an option that would make the background of the viewer WHITE or RED or some other obnoxious color so you'd know during repositions when image blanking becomes a problem.

if you build a lut as explained and you use it only on the gui it does what you need.

I usually at the end of a movie do a blanking pass with such lut. ..

Screw the LUT. I just wanna hit a button and have it there as a regular feature of the program. It's doable.

I also still want a user-adjustable reticle generator so we can place a white box anywhere on the screen and change the H & V size with pixel-accurate control, and not just SMPTE safe action or area. I've been asking for that for about 5 or 6 years.

There is an option in projectsettings/general option to make the canvas background grey. It's not as good as using that lut to make the blank are red but it's the only built in option in Resolve. Also, I usually use the "data burn in" option to superimpose a PSD custom graticule on top of my grade before the final export.

Given that working in a letterbox is something that we will never unfortunately escape, a definable active-area would be welcome, and maybe its splitting hairs to say that it isn't necessarily a "safe" area. Typically, the "extents" border is helpful when trying to eliminate all the little "dog-ears" that intrude after a smooth/stable process doesn't get completely zoomed out. Otherwise, I'm a little concerned that all the input/node/output/blank/source scaling/cropping/AR will ultimately utterly confuse the average user and what Resolve sends to an output display may or may not be what the export is going to look like. For that reason, the other resort may be the ability of the physical output display monitor to generate a hashmark that is independent of Resolve processing. If your monitor can't or won't do that, maybe worth considering replacement. A little like going outside the system color profiling (ignoring the UI viewer) the way we like to think the external video I/O is passing a "true fidelity" image.

well, coming from quantel, we have two different tools:

one is the "safe area" described as an aspect ratio from the user, recently improved to 4 digits, range from about 1.000 to 4.000, so if i want to do a proper dci showcase i can punch 2.386 and is good to go. do i work for hateful 8? punch 2.770 (or whatever it was) and you are good to go.

once you set your master value you have two other reticle expressed as percentage of the main aspect, default to [90,90]% and [80,80]% and you can easily change them both axes lindependently, so, if you want to see the center 1.778 extracting from a 2.390 geometry, you can easily set your main geometry, set one of the two lines as x=74 y=100 and you have it. very very easy.

the other approach basically is giving you a pixel count for those cases when you have a special extraction: let's say (Tarantino again) that you shoot that silly aspect ratio but on top you need to extract a very specific number of pixel, we had to retain the whole 6k original but show only the extraction (with the safe area). once we scaled down in pixel for the 4k presentation was easy peasy....

Which reminds me of the old telecine days of using grease pencil marks on the monitor...

I think just adding one more Safe Area selection:

Extents
Action
Area
Title
Aspect
User

would do it. The trick is where to put the sizing controls for the User position, which would require H&V sizing plus H&V position. I think another control in the Sizing panel would do it. In fact, I wouldn't mind moving the Safe Area displays to the Sizing pallet completely, just to give us more control over them. And I kind of miss the old Evertz Safe Area generator which allowed having temporary black or transparent borders for certain kind of transfers, like when you need to give a client letterboxed material that they can still see through, which is handy for dailies. Sure, you can do it as a layer and a composite, but that's kind of a lot of trouble to go through.

I've even had clients hold their thumbs on the monitor for 10 minutes. Bad old days. :(

I hope you agree with me for the need for a user-adjustable reticle! Heck, I'd like a screen-sized grid, as long as they're expanding the control panel. I need that all the time, just to see if everything is level (like titles or the horizon or a window frame or something).

Walter, thank you for telling us about that LUT trick. It works great.

Thanks waltervolpatto for this trick, for anyone who wants a premade LUT I have attached it below. Would be great if someone could check it works properly for them, I'm no expert at making LUT's!

Cheers,

James

FCP 7 has an option for making the background either black, white or 2 varieties of checkerboard. The checkerboard option is amazingly useful as it instantly shows you whether something has an alpha applied, or indeed whether an image has been moved too far. Kinda took it for granted that all pro software would have it, Premiere has it, not sure about Avid, but Resolve doesn't and nor does FCPX despite the latest update doing it some serious benefits.

The LUT solution is a good idea but for some reason if I moved HD material then I wouldn't be able to see anything wrong until I hit 3-4 pixels of tilt or 2-3 pixels of pan, even when the image was full screen on my LCD monitor, and my output HD monitor didn't fare much better. But I guess no one would notice such a small anomaly on viewing anyway.

What I use is a Timeline Node qualifier set to luminance only, Low = 0 High = 50.1.

Soft set to 0.

I then set the Lift primary to some extreme greenish color cast.

That will show everything that is RGB 0,0,0 as green so you can spot those pesky black lines.

Wow thank you Walter for that LUT trick, amazing! Finally I have a good solution for doing this.

& thanks James for posting it for download!

Obviously +1 for having something along these lines built into Resolve, that would sure be nice.

cheers,
