ARW Support

PostWed Apr 13, 2016 2:26 pm

I'd like to use Resolve to grade some stills but they are in Sony's ARW RAW format. Any plans to add native support for ARW in the future or is the best method to convert to DNG and go from there?

Thanks

Thanks,

Do you have a converter you would recommend?

I was able to convert ARW files from an ILCE-7SM2 using Photoshop CC 2015.

Depending on what camera generated the files, you may be able to use Photoshop or (some version of) Adobe Lightroom. It appears to be a moving target as the format changes. Some info here:

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1775299

If you don't have Photoshop or Lightroom, or your camera isn't supported yet, you can try Sony's Image Data Converter software.

Finally, there are online converters you can find by searching, I haven't tried any of them so I don't know if they are any good/legit.

Depending of your preference of program, there is a version of Capture One limited to use with ARW for an attractive price.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thanks for all the info, stills aren't something I usually deal with. I do like the one time purchase of Capture One over a subscription for Photoshop, which I don't have or need.

Adobe has a free DNG converter you could try. Link to 10.1:

I would dearly love it if Blackmagic decides to make it possible to import Sony ARW (RAW) files directly into Resolve - there is so much extra data in the RAW files than in the converted JPGs needed to import into Resolve.

There must be a much larger community of Sony users now than in 2016 when the request was raised in this thread - and, maybe, now is a good time to look at it again :-)

If you can add Sony ARW file direct import, it would save me (and others) so much time (and provide more days to play with in colour grading).

Either way, thank you all for such a great product.

If you have the Sony ARW spec, please share it.. that's the pacing factor.

As Peter indicated, Sony seems to be not very cooperative (to put it mildly).

Dcraw supports 731 cameras and counting, including, Sonys, Canons and Nikons (by the way, there is a glitch in Resolve for the new Nikon Z6/7 NEFs).

The use is free and source code is available (Dave does accept donations): https://www.dechifro.org/dcraw/dcraw.c. It's the Holy Grail of RAW still decoders.

I just under what motivation Sony has for not providing the ARW spec so that their cameras can be compatible with every NLE. Their cameras have to be making more sales than Sony Vegas.

Sony is, as usual, likes to be a D**K.

BUT, you don't really need the specs, and you can cut a tons of work by using a ready made library which will get the file(s) and will decode it for you. It supports TONS of cameras and formats.

The library name is: libraw

If you worry about the license, then fear not - it's dual licensed, both under LGPL and CDDL, so I don't see any issue for BMD with using it.
