2.35 ratio Render

PostFri Apr 28, 2017 9:05 am

I have a made a video edit in a 1920x1080 timeline in DaVinci Resolve. I tried applying output blanking 2.35 and render the video. It came out fine but has the black bars on top and bottom. How do I render it out without the black bars on the top and bottom. I tried changing the project settings to 1920x818 but it didn't work. Any help would be appreciated.

If you want to export without the black bars, create and edit in a timeline matching the desired resolution.

I often use 1920 x 800 myself.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

And you actually succeeded, doing that? What codec?

Quicktime, mp4, m4v, mkv will support whichever resolution ratio is chosen. Most players (i.e. Smart TV's and of course computers) will play them back and pillarbox or letterbox as needed.

Having said that, nowadays most broadcasters and other industry distributors specifically request a 16X9 file even if it does include pillarbox or letterbox blanking as part of the video.

Again, did you actually try it and succeed? I think you'll end up with a 1920x1080 container no matter what the Resolve settings are. And, worse, actual picture dimensions can end up reduced.

I've done it and succeeded. Created a 1920 x 815 timeline, exported, and got a file of the same resolution.

What was the native footage resolution? The timeline resolution? The deliver resolution? The delivery codec? Thanks.

I think of an error of typo 815 ...
In general, codecs accept modulo 8 or modulo 16 = 0

With which codec the 815?

AFAIK modulus 8 and 16 isn't really a problem with newer devices/versions of h264, but was a bigger issue a few years ago, when h.264 was new. (?)
But to be safe I always try to keep the pixel count even.

Unless you're going for a pre-1970 vibe, you should be working with 2.39:1 aspect. 2.35:1 was deprecated by SMPTE in 1970 in favor of 2.39:1 for widescreen. All cinema, streaming and shiny discs conform to 2.39:1 (Some used 2.40 to make the math easier.)

That translates into 1920 x 800 or 1920 x 804.

Be sure to turn off letterbox blanking prior to the render. And use Brad Allen's excellent "Aspect Ratio Cheat Sheet" as a guide:
