Imagine yourself standing alone in the midst of a seemingly eternal expanse.
Which way do you start walking? Do you consider trying to survive where you are? Do you have the resources..like "air" and "water?" Do you have any tools? Are there predators about to devour you? Yes, there are.
In this blend of artistic interpretation and nuts-and-bolts technology, the first major mistake is failing to understand the difference between a "feature" and a "benefit." Sales representatives constantly baffle their marks with this confusion. For example, a pre-built "style LUT" is a
feature, but it is only a
benefit if you otherwise couldn't build it yourself, or you are not actually looking for a
creative solution. Reverse-engineering style guide? Just an opinion, but. Its been done. So at this point, the result will either be parody or satire.
I have been asked to emulate so many styles (for mostly the above given reason); Matrix, MInority Report, Heritage Moments, &c., &c., &c.... it never ends... none of which was art-directed on-set, just more-or-less point the camera and fix it in post. Its kind of like being one of those people who do voice-impressions -- okay, say it like Owen Wilson, now like Obama, okay, now like Jack Nicholson, Winston Churchill...
Being original is the hardest thing to do.
