Resolve 14 playback speed vs Premiere

PostWed Sep 13, 2017 4:14 am

I really like Resolve 14 interface, yesterday was working on a new project with it. Started in 1080p and everything was OK, but when I imported 4k clip... woof. Dropping frames began. Than I speeded up the clip by 250% and the slide show begin - around 10 fps in preview. I tried using performance mode, quarter resolution and etc - nothing helped except "create optimized media", which took like 20 min for both of my clips. Now my latop is Lenovo Yoga 720, with 7700HQ, GTX 1050 and 16 gigs of RAM running on Windows 10.

I remembered that in Premeire the playback of 4k clips was smooth and decided to test out its powers:
In Full resolution 4k clip playback - no lag
In Full resolution 4k clip playback 250% speed - no lag
In Full resolution 4k clip playback 250% speed, 1 LUT - no lag
In Full resolution 4k clip playback 250% speed, 1 LUT + another 4k clip + 1 LUT with 50% opacity on top - NO FREAKING LAG

So.. it all bags a question "What the hell is going on with Resolve playback engine?"

I could be wrong, but I think Premiere, Media Composer, and FCPX playback all video in 8 bit. While Resolve used to playback video in 32 bit float.

Now, in version 14, the video playback is in 16 bit float, which they claimed it's 10 times faster. I think it's something has to do with math to go from 32 bit float to 16 bit float.

Practically, I'm not experiencing any speed differences while working on my previous 1080p ProRes project on my new macBook Pro with 4gb GPU. I felt it's the same speed as in version 12.5.

If processing is in 32bit floats, going to half float for display does not give any speed gains. OpenGL texture buffers that are most probably used for drawing the preview can be directly fed with 32bit floats, no conversion is necessary.
I do stuff.

Is there a difference in speed and preview between free and paid version, really?

I am not sure which compression format my files use. They came straight out of my Panasonic G85, where I record in mp4 format/4k 25fps.

So it seems like some kind of a bug of sort. I am looking at Blackmagic official Resolve site, and its stated there:

DaVinci Resolve 14 features an incredible new video playback engine with CPU and GPU optimizations, fast 16-bit float playback, lower latency, faster UI refresh, support for Apple Metal, and more! These upgrades combine to make DaVinci Resolve faster and far more responsive than ever. Working on long timelines with thousands of clips is incredibly fluid and editing is even more precise. Scrubbing and playback are instant, often starting before you lift your fingers off the keyboard! Powerful acceleration for processor intensive formats, like H.264, makes it possible to edit 4K material on a laptop in realtime! Whether you’re working in HD or 4K, with ProRes, H.264 or even RAW images, DaVinci Resolve 14 is completely responsive and fast enough to keep up with your every move!

If it is a false advertising, I would be really disappointed.

BTW I dont care how many bits there are, video in Premiere looks fine to my eyes. I just want it to work smoothly on my brand new machine.

More than 8 bits is not so important when editing, but really so in color grading!

H.264 playback is much faster in the Studio version on my Mac. Since Resolve is relying on system functions for H.264 und HEVC, it might be a royalty thing – I'm sure they don't like to pay to others if they give something away for free.

Seems a bit strange to complain about features not being available in the free version of an application.

Especially comparing a gratis piece of software versus the paid version of another application (which is still more expensive per year than a paid perpetual license version of Resolve).

Well, I have Studio (14) and I get lag with 4K h.264 29.97 fps material. Forget using 60fps. I've built 2 different machines and both have the problem.

To the OP: IMO If you really want a lag free experience with Resolve, you are going to have to throw a TON of hardware at it OR transcode your material.

Well, there is no prove that Resolve Studio will be faster atm. And I have no desire to buy a software which free version cannot properly perform such a basic task. Actually you accusations of me comparing the free version and paid are ludicrous. It doesnt matter if its paid or free. We can compare Adobe demo version if you so desire to Resolve free version. Price doesn't matter. We are talking about functionality and basic features which will determine if I will dedicate my time into transitioning into this software or not. I am not hesitant to buy software if its worth it, 300$ seems like a good competitive price. But right now, its not usable for 4k on a laptop and I consider official statement from Blackmagic which I quoted above (about editing 4K on a laptop) - false advertising.

So after what Robert James just siad, I am really said, cos I do like Resolve's general interface workflow and superior color grading tools a lot.

Sadly no more response here. I am back to Premiere to work with my 4k files. Its a pity as I really dig Resolve interface, its workflow and all the possibilities it brings to the table (color grading is next level). But I dont want to wait for several hours for my footage to get trans-coded.

OK. Here's a response. I purchased Resolve Studio for $299 USD. On the modest laptop you see listed below, using Resolve Studio 14, I am editing 4K UHD H.264 smoothly in real-time, no transcoding required, with absolutely no dropped frames.

In all the truth, that is so WIRED, to make the free version no to have this type of encoding. And not telling customers about it anywhere. I mean I get it that you can work only with one GPU in Free version vs Studio, that makes total sense but this.. my laptop has the same specs as yours. Well, anyway, that means there is hope after all.

I'm not sure there are technical reasons behind that difference or licensing reasons.
For sure BM doesn't want to pay royalties for something they pass on for free…

Yes, the CPU is identical.

However the Lenovo 720 uses an NVIDIA GTX 1050 with 2GB VRAM
The Dell XPS 15 9560 uses an NVIDIA GTX 1050 with 4GB VRAM

Resolve 14 hardware requirements are for a minimum of 4GB VRAM.

I do not know if this is a test proving the qualities of the studio version V14.0 but I did a test from a clip 4k GH5 4096x2160 / 10 Bits / 4: 2: 2/24 fps / a timeline 4096x2160

I changed the playback frame rate to 60 fps and my i6850k CPU reached 93% at constant speed.

You can do a test with a similar clip to compare? It is not to obtain the same results but to see if your cores are as much solicited?

Beware that it is not only the cores: it is also necessary that the HDD in flow arrive to follow. I looked at the GPUs: about 50%. So I think H264 depends a lot on the CPU (s) and then on the rest.

Does Premiere do better with the same type of clip 4k GH5 4096x2160 / 10 Bits / 4: 2: 2/24 fps / a timeline 4096x2160 playing at 60fps? :?

I dont have GH5, so cannot test it, but just try to recreate my test they I performed in the first post here. BTW I did try Resolve Studio, and IT IS playing back 4k files without drop frames (without optimized media), HOWEVER, if you put the clip up even 200% speed, the freezing began and at 400% I got about 3-10 fps.

That is true. Sadly Lenovo sells only 2gb version in US and 4gb in Europe. I got the 2gb one(. However please do the same 4k clip speed up test and lets see what you will come up with.

Hi Andrew,

We can make the numbers speak as we can: and you know:

Photo 1:

Color Tab: 6 active cores: inevitably, instead of having 12 cores in hypertheading, we go down to 39 fps (it lacks 6 ... cores). The advantage of the color tab is that we are assured that all video frames are decoded in real time.

only6_CORES_39fpsvs24fps.jpg

Now you go to the edit tab, if you activate the 12 cores and you do not activate "Show All Video Frames": => you can go up to 120 fps: a 4K clip on a 1080p project (like OP).

so pay attention to the interpretation and what you want.

I want real numbers not some skipped frames :)

6 cores (but they run at 4GHz!) about 40fps and all 12 just above 60fps.
It's not that bad scaling with number of cores, but not linear either.
I'm just bit shocked that UHD 60p 10bit needs whole power of i7 6850K.

If you guys really want to compare the decoders, you'll need to get rid of the indexing and cache files (sorry Andrew: that's what Adobe tech support calls them; if you don't believe it, your quarrel is with them) which Premiere creates by the gigabyte when material is imported into a project.

Unfortunately, there's no way to perform that test, since Premiere won't play clips until that initial processing is done.

1 more time- Premiere creates many tine files for different purpose (file parameters info, audio waveform peak, etc) and only 1 set of file which are fairly big- xxxx.cfa. These are 32bit float PCM audio conforms which are created for some audio formats/containers.

I use Premiere daily and there no cache files for h264 video.
Premiere doesn't create any cache files for video part.

Nonsense, indeed. The last time we went through this, I quoted the relevant passage from Adobe tech support. And other users here noted at the time of the argument that they clean out gigabytes of these support files, every week.

Let's just say your experience is unique. "Spreading false crap" is an unfortunate way to characterize a view with which you don't agree, but I'm used to it by now.

Your link to Adobe proves that Premiere creates many types of caches files (all tiny except .cfa ones) for different purpose, but none of them is a video proxy file. Why can't you get it?

Told you- I use Premiere daily. I can show you project which has about 50 (30min to 1h duration) files imported. These are AVC-I DPP files. I imported them and worked straight away- where are those video proxy files? It would take my 4 cores machine days to create those proxy files and yet I can work straight away :D All what I have in cache are waveforms and some other tiny files. This is all on drive which has 20GB free space. Based on your imagined theory I should not be able to work anymore. And yet I can drag another 200 files and still have 20GB (or maybe 19) left of free space. I can drag another 1000 h264 MP4 and it won't change things much.

This is probably most detailed explanation of Premiere proxy files:

https://screenlight.tv/blog/the-definit ... edia-cache

which ones is video proxy which would be played in Premiere instead of source one?

Tell me what sort of file should I import and I will show you what proxy files have been created. I'm happy to waste my time and do it for you.
It's not about having opinion- it's a fact, so in this case there is only 1 truth.

Readers other than Andrew who are interested in this question can refer to

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2152942

It's a post from Adobe tech support, dated January 2017, which reads in part:

When importing video and audio into Adobe Premiere Pro, it processes versions of these files that it can readily access for faster performance. These are referred to as "media cache" files. These are stored in the Media Cache Files folder. In addition, there is a folder containing a database, which retains links to each of the media cache files. These are referred to as "media cache database" files. They are located in the Media Cache folder.

Current users of Premiere need only have a look at the appropriate directory, to confirm that the folders Premiere creates can become quite large:

Mac: /Users//Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common
Windows: \Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Common

And no Andrew, I'm not going to re-install Premiere , so as to provide you with a few gigabytes of files. You wouldn't believe me anyway. Premiere users have all the evidence at hand, and can come to their own conclusions, they don't need either of us.

And what does this quote prove?
Repeats what I said, nothing else. Many different cache file types to help/speed up Premiere re-open and work with source files (like conformed .cfa files for some compressed audio formats). CFA files are you gigabytes if you every worked with long files based on AAC or AC3. If you worked with PCM/AIFF etc based then you cache will never grown into gigabytes as .cfa are not created and there are no other big files except .cfa.

It doesn't say Premiere will automatically creates proxy files for compressed video formats- does it? This bit is just your wrong assumption!

Do you understand that I use Premiere daily on Mac and PC and I know about those cache folders and what is there.
You seams to have such a hard time to admit that you are wrong.
Premier doesn't automatically create any proxy video files (I don't think it actually ever did). You Adobe quote doesn't prove anything at all in this matter, so if you don't use Premiere and don't know how it works, please stop spreading this crap. All what you say is based on quote which doesn't say anything about video proxy files. You created this bit based on fact that in past you saw cache folder growing to big GB. You just refuse to understand that it grows due to .cfa files which have nothing to do with video.

Well- exactly. All (or almost all) Premiere users will know that Premiere doesn't create any proxy files for video part, so I agree with you that people don't need to be convinced. They know it or can check it. It's only you who needs to be convinced, but that seams to be impossible.

Drag h264 file to Premiere (let it create .cfa file for audio if it needs to) and you can start comparing playback of h264.
Do you think that this audio bit makes Premiere advantageous- just use MP4/MOV h264 without audio :D
It won't many any real difference at all- can guarantee you- but you won't believe me, so TRY yourself!

Ain't there no video (meaning image) cache files in Premiere.

Wishful thinking does not go a long way in solving technical issues, instead it avoids getting to the bottom of the problem.

Reminds me the constant mantra I hear about Nuke that this and that is slow because Nuke does not multithread well and most ops are single-threaded. Well, ofcourse no-one can back it up by any technical explanation, but as it is a "well known fact" from some forum post, it must be true. Nuke can be a slug, but the reasons are usually somewhere else, because most ops there are multithreaded probably as much as possible for any general scanline or tile based raster engine. One can optimize the hell out of a single filter in isolation, but if you have to support building custom plugins that should be automatically multithreaded (AND also vectorized to simd AND cuda/openCL) by the render engine, you have to make some compromises.

Coming back to Resolve, getting to the source is not about finding imaginary explanations of why some other software must be faster, it is about finding out why Resolve is slower. Can be the decoder itself (although unlikely), can be the system how frames are requested from decoder, could be some quirks of the playback engine due to preferring some aspect of performance over another etc.
I do stuff.

You're absolutely right. It doesn't say that. And, strangely enough, neither did I. Adobe calls these files "media cache" files. It refers to them as "versions" of the original files, created to provide faster performance. With some formats, initial processing time, after the files are imported, can be considerable.

What's the sum total of better performance, in creating these files, including the indexing? Are they crucial or inconsequential, where Premiere performance is better than Resolve? I have no idea. But, since Premiere won't run without them, neither do you.

It makes 0 difference for h264 as Premiere doesn't create index file for h264 sources. It only creates properties file for h264 video which has noting to do with playback. It just tells Premiere what the files is, so when you drag it to different project than it's loaded faster (it makes different when you drag 1000 files).

Other than this index file doesn't really help with playback performance, just with scrubbing. Premiere creates it only for some MPEG2 based formats.

When you drag video h264 based file you can play it straight away- there is no waiting for any proxy or even index file, so it's fair comparison with Resolve.

Hi Andrew, Please :)

In the meantime: we speak ... we speak ... but it still does not give me an idea in FPS what Adobe Premiere knows how to do with a H264 4K on : (please FPS, not %)
timeline 4K DCI or UDH
timeline HD.

Thank you. :)

The last time I used Premiere, about a year ago, the program absolutely did generate index and other files with h.264 material -- I know, because I sat there waiting for it to finish.

On top of that, with Panasonic .mts files, the project routinely forgot the files were already generated -- and started the indexing processing again when the project was reopened. As already noted, these files routinely generate gigabyates of material on the C:/ drive. That's a lot of files, for software which doesn't create any.

I'm not going to reinstall the program to continue this unfruitful discussion with you, but your experience may not be universal.

Do you know 100% these were index files, not .cfa files for audio?
Even year ago Premiere did not generate index files for h264 (only for some MPEG2 based formats).

Great- so maybe you want to buy my "better" version of Premiere, because now you claim my version is different than anyone else's :) I'm part of Adobe beta programme, but I run standard latest version at work, so can guarantee you that nothing is different in the way I work.

Andrew, thank you very much for making it crystal clear. Not only don't I know anything, but neither does Adobe tech support, as of January 2017.

Only you know. That closes the case for sure. Goodbye, good luck.

Hi Andrew,

screenshot(s) equivalent (in ADOBE PREMIERE) to the one I did:
You take a clip GH5 H264 4KDCI 10 bits 422 (one finds full on VIMEO in native, if...)
You create a project in DR: TimeLine Resolution: 4K DCI (4096x2160)
You import the clip (the Frame Rate timeline will automatically be OK => 1st clip)
You create a TL in 4K DCI from the clip
Edit tab: Active "Show All video Frames"
Screenshot
You change the TL to 1080p (HD) in project settings
Screenshot

Then do the same thing in the COLOR tab: normally you should have the same results.
(all I did at the beginning : FPS + Cores usages)
Thank you.

PPRO still has a massive playback speed advantage...

and media cach is mostly for waveform display...and some mpg2 decoding. All others playback natively.

I was editing realtime 4k in PPRO using cineform back in 2007....10 years ago on a gaming rig.

I have switched completely to davinci now...but often miss the speed of adobe

Hi Mike,

No offense. I repeated "we speak ... we speak ..." because it has been a long time since threads are created telling us that Premiere is better ... that first is faster ... than this or that: but every time I ask for a screenshot demonstrating what is said: there is never anything. (compared to the conditions I posted with screenshot)

I hope not to have offended you but also that you understand me. Thank you.
