Grab Still error - Layered EXR + Multiple Ext. Mattes

PostThu Aug 17, 2017 10:36 am

Hi, can anybody from Blackmagic help me with an email to send my files to profile?

My issue is that I cannot use Grab Still and get an error when using a Layered EXR file, it is also crazy slow to the point I have to wait ages to see an update. This is a single EXR and not part of a sequence.

Image
Error
Code: Select all
Failed to grab still to view 0 from track 0 clip 0: Failed to get color
corrected still image for track 0 clip 0 at record frame 86400
sequence/timeline Timeline 1

System
Code: Select all
DaVinci Resolve 14.1 - Issue since Beta.
Windows 10

i7-5960X @ 4Ghz
32Gb DDR4 2800Ghz
SSD Samsung 850 Pro (OS and Apps) 500-read 450-write
M.2 Samsung 960 Pro (Scratch and Current Project files) 3000-Read 2000-write
1x TitanX Maxwell
2x TitanX Pascal

Any help in this regard would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

EDIT2
-----
Tif works a lot better and faster, I can get a lot more done, but will start bogging down after a while and probably due to a set number of Nodes on a Still. Usage on CPU, RAM, GPU, Drives will be not even working at 15%, so plenty of underutilized resources left, but Resolve doesn't do much and catches up super slowly and sometimes not at all.

Logs and a project drp as discussed here could help:

Thanks for the link to the Thread. I have edited the first post and added a link to the log, project and layered EXR file on Dropbox.

Hi, will this still be looked into for me, now that Beta is over? I still get the issue on release version. This is rather an important part of my workflow using large layered EXR. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Also, does cryptomatte work in Resolve?

Still happening with 14.0.1.... :(

How long is it meant to take to 'rebuild' the Color node trees? Everything stays black and I don't see my GPU's working at all with GPU-Z. I have to disable all nodes and enable one by one, takes forever. Why can't Resolve handle this? Don't get me wrong, I love resolve, but it is slow as hell in the color tab with multiple mattes etc. Not to mention Grab still doesn't work on larger node networks for me... maybe it is terrible at handling EXRs, not just layered EXRs. Would be nice if BM support bothered to give a response.

Tested your DRP and EXR on my system (HackOSX) and same thing (worse as i dont have 3 monster GPU's like you , only 2)
But feels like a combination of Resolve's multilayer EXR handling , which i had always issues with although it recently improved from unusable to reasonable, and the size of your exr. Uncompressed (used Nuke to check) its over 4GB for a single frame, so Resolve is dealing with that amount of data internally in all the nodes , regardless of how you compress the source file. Its just tipping over.
Probably requires a rewrite of the EXR handling to get this working, but seems a better job for Nuke to me if its not a video as has a very sophisticated layer engine that does not constantly has to deal with all the data.

I found a better way of working is to separate the EXR in separate files per layer. That worked for me all the time.

Ricky, can you PM to me a link of the source EXR and an export of the project too?

Thanks Peter, I have PM'd you.

Hey Glenn, thanks for checking. Yeah Nuke works with a similar structure without issue and I think Fusion would too. Personally I prefer resolve for these adjustments and think it should be able to handle it if required. The issue still happens on way smaller sized EXR's with larger nodal trees. I do however want to test individual TIFs and see how it goes, but when I am not under pressure. (whenever that is :D) I think I did try individual EXR's and it still gave me issues with this nodal setup, will have to re-test.

Hi all

I have made a post regarding the Cryptomatte Resolve support.
Still in review but I will drop the link in here so you can be up to date with its developments.

Cheers
Cedric
