Fairlight: Unlinked Sub Bus Return in Patch Input/Output

PostTue Feb 20, 2018 6:10 pm

1. I link Sub Bus Return from Main Out in Patch Input/Output. (figure 1)
2. I change Timeline and then I return back to the same Timeline was open before.
3. Links is gone. (figure 2)

What's wrong?

What are you attempting to achieve by patching the Main Buss output to the insert return of the Sub Buss?

Where is the Sub Buss Output being routed to?

Good question, Reynaud.

I need to achieve export 6x mono track from 5.1 surround sound.
But I have more than one 5.1 audio track in timeline like in figure bellow.

(i) Are the A1, A2 and A3 tracks all routed to a single 5.1 configured Master Buss (M1)?

(ii) Do you then require 6 individual mono LPCM Wave files from the output of M1?

(iii) Alternatively, do you require 6 mono streams embedded within a single interleaved LPCM Wave file?

(i) Yes, they are all routed to single 5.1 Master Bus.
(ii) No, I don't require 6 individual mono PCM wave files.
(iii) That's right, exactly I require 6 mono streams embedded within a single MOV file - video with 6 audio mono streams.

Ensure that the "Render one track per channel" option is selected, with the M1 Master Buss assigned to Output Track 1.

Confirm the 6 mono audio streams are present in the container via MediaInfo.

Oh yes! So simple. I didn`t see this charming "Render one track per channel".
Thank You very much, Reynaud.

And what about (iii) ... require 6 individual mono LPCM Wave files from the output of M1?

Two possible methods are available to achieve this requirement within the example Project layout you have presented. i.e. three 5.1 Audio Tracks (which actually limits your options somewhat, but these are three of several methods to give an idea of how to achieve this).

Option A: Print to a Timeline Track
(i) create a new 5.1 Audio Track, rename it "PRINT", assign "Violet" / "Pink" colour to designate the record track

(ii) open the "Print" track's Input Selector via the Fairlight Mixer and select "Main Bus"
Image

(iii) In the Patch Input/Output window, Source= Main Out (M1) routed to Destination = Track Input (PRINT)
Image

(iv) Record arm the PRINT Track and record the Timeline selection.

Result: 6 mono LPCM Wave files in the target directory.
In my case /Volumes/Media/Resolve Caches/Capture

Caveat: rename the files from the default "FL_capture_2018-02-22_0947_T0005_C00001.wav" to match the delivery spec.

option B: The "MXF OP-Atom" Format option produces an output of M1 as 6 MXF files in the target directory.

Option C: Render Individual Clips, with the Timeline Tracks as Source
The third method, is based on the assumption that when importing your source audio material, you have assigned each component channel to a dedicated Audio Track within Clip Atrributes, as follows:
Image

You can then create a Linked Group for your Source Tracks as follows:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=69854#p389938

This will allow you to continue working the same way as using the three 5.1 Audio Tracks, but it affords you much more flexibility in terms of processing and delivery.

Once editing has been completed, instead of retaining the three Link Groups, move all your clips on to a single stream, so you only have a single Linked Group comprised of 6 Audio Tracks.

Right click on the empty tracks in the Timeline and select the "Delete Linked Track" option for A2 and A3, retaining only the A1 Track on the Timeline.

On the Deliver page, use the "Individual Clips" option, with the "Channels" parameter assigned to "Same as source".
Image

Result: This produces 6 LPCM wave files in the target directory.

Note: This isn't an output of M1, but rather uses the Timeline as source.
If you retain the three Linked Groups, instead of outputting 6 LPCM wave files, Resolve will output all tracks and produce 18 LPCM wave files.
