Linux OpenCL intel

PostFri Apr 20, 2018 10:34 am

Hi all,

I successfully installed Resolve 15 on computer and laptop. Overloaded with joy that we finally have audio in Linux without BM card (thank you so much).

On my computer with Nvidia GeForce GTX 960 it works fine.

However on my laptop I get this error during startup: "... couldn't find any OpenCL capable GPU's..."
My laptop has an i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and intel HD5500 graphics.

I am very much aware that Resolve requires a powerful GPU which HD5500 is not (at all).
But:
- "clinfo" shows that it is at least OpenCL capable
- on windows (dual boot, same machine) it does work
- I would love to do some basic editing on the road (no color grading or other GPU intensive tasks)

It seems like resolve doesn't find the right "graphics card".

Is there any arguments to start the resolve executable with that could point it in the right direction (or advanced config params) please?

clinfo:

Re: Linux OpenCL intel

Good for you. That'll be your working config for now, along with the desktop. Different ports talk well together, if the versions are in sync.

gnephews wrote:However on my laptop I get this error during startup: "... couldn't find any OpenCL capable GPU's..."
My laptop has an i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and intel HD5500 graphics.
Unsurprising.

Some Intel Integrated graphics can run R15b1, for sure. On Windows and macOS. With Linux, the problem boils down to propietary drivers. That's why Ati users get OpenCL with the AMDGPU-PRO driver, but not with MESA.

Then again, you seem to have Intel's OpenCL drivers installed.

Plot thickens. The simple explanation would be that the Intel drivers have never been supported on the Linux version, as no-one thought it would ever be attempted to run with them. If you have the Advanced Panel hooked up, it is a bit cheap, for sure. ;)

Your best bet could be to hope BMD adds support to Intel's propietary drivers, or, better yet, MESA :-D

Different OpenCl should be compatible in general -- o.k. this usually isn't really true in practice -- but for this more general card dedection, even the most buggy implementation should work...

but there are also a few other other possible reasons thinkable, why it does not work:

a. like many similar solutions OpenCL comes in different versions and resolve requires a newer version.
(although the versions reported are in many cases not really full supported)

b. resolve reported "couldn't find any OpenCL capable GPU" is misleading. this could be case, because users reported success on AMD cards only after they installed the otherwise unused CUDA drivers. and the same also happens the other way around: if OpenCL isn't present, CUDA support resp. an accepted card will not be detected...

This is true.

E.g., our Mint install, with CUDA, wanted OpenCL dev files installed before running. There may yet be an interdependency in the works, as in, Resolve puts its ducks in a row before deciding which to use.

Hello,

Was this ever solved ? Is there an actual solution ? I have a Z370 Gigabyte Aorus Gaming 5 Mobo. I'm using only the Intel UHD630 GPU within it. Haven't had a chance to buy a new better GPU yet.

I have Linux, Windows 10 and Mac OSX 10.13 running on here. Davinci works everywhere except Linux.

Is there a way of having it work in Linux with the Intel GPU now ? All I need Davinci for is basically for some video playbacks and moreso video transcoding ... (I use it to create proxies while doing the backups on set...).

Thanks !

Is there any official confirmation that using Intel graphics on Linux is entirely unsupported (and/or will remain unsupported)? Or that such support is being actively worked on?

Since my machine can run Resolve fine with only Intel graphics under Windows, it's frustrating that I would need to purchase an expensive eGPU just to run Resolve on the same machine under Linux.

I'd like to also add to this as I've encountered the same limitation.

I posted the problem a while ago but didn't get any response from Blackmagic :(.

From my own development experience with OpenCL on Linux, the most recent integrated Intel GPUs are actually surprisingly capable. And they have nice features such as dedicated hardware 10-bit h265 decode/encode at 4K.

yes -- it would be indeed a desirable and significant improvment!

that's unfortunately the way BMD communicates.
