reverse circle transition?

trying to achieve 'looney tunes' closer, but can't see any way to reverse the direction of the default iris wipe. i have searched but don't seem to find any reference.

in most nle's i've used previously it's generally a 'reverse' direction button?

but reversing graph doesn't do anything - or perhaps i'm not understanding the directions?

You can reverse the direction using the curve editor, but you end up with a large black dot that shrinks. Giving you a reveal instead of a closer. In addition to reversing direction, the effect needs to be inverted.

You could pull it off in the color page with a Circular Power window and keyframes though.

That was the only solution I could think of, too. Or doing the wipe and creating a compound clip of just that effect, then reversing the speed in the timeline (which is a bit clumsy).

it all sounds rather complicated just to achieve a simple 'reverse' of a wipe.

i think i'll work out some other closer - might well be a better idea since many viewers are probably too young to remember looney tunes anyway

I was the OP on that other post you found. If you know how to get to the graph editor (for the transition effect), then reverse the "polarity" of the graph, make it go down from left to right instead of up. Make sure the transition effect is applied to the layer of black video that's over top your footage. The transition is Not applied to the footage itself.

thanks for getting back. i followed your instructions the first time around, and yes, they work changing the direction perfectly, but what i'm after is inverting the effect, ie, the background becomes foreground - just like looney tunes ending.

hope that makes sense?

Ah, this is good to know. I would love to see them have a "Reverse" checkbox in all of the wipe transitions.

Only solution I can think of is to reverse both clips, join, transition, aggregate the trio, and then reverse it back forward.

For anyone still looking to reverse stock transitions (like Looney Tunes circle close / closing black bars), this worked for me:

1. Add Solid Color generator from Effects library above your timeline clip
2. Apply normal video transition to Solid Color clip
3. Double click transition to reveal more, and click keyframe editor button (on right side of transition clip)
4. Reverse slope of transition gradient, starting at 1 and ending at 0.

Try the "Shape Circle" effect. It can do an offset "Looney Tunes" effect including the black background, all with one effect on one clip. No need for extra layers. All parameters can be keyframed.

I had a situation a couple of years ago where a director kind of berated me about a "vignette effect," and it turned out he basically wanted a "Looney Tunes" iris-out thing. I laughed and told him, "you realize this effect goes back to silent movies done in the 1910s?" He had never heard of "iris-out," but that's what it was called in film for more than 100 years. As I always say, at least the client was ultimately happy with the results.
