A few observations

PostFri Jul 13, 2018 11:08 am

1) 2d tracker doesn't track as expected in resolve studio fusion tab (it jumps to unexpected parts of the frame) but works fine in fusion9 studio.
If I copy the tracker from fusion9 to resolve it works also.

2) Sometimes resolve shows unrendered frames when I watch a sequence in edit tab. For example if I do some clean up in a shot with fus tab, I watch it in fus tab without problems, but at edit page I see single frames without cleanup.

3) I couldn’t find apple prores export options at delivery page.

4) It would be good to change size of the inspector window at fusion page

As you didn’t share and system or OS details I assume you don’t have a Mac do there is no ProRes rendering available.

Interesting that I can render Prores with Fusion 9 Studio but can't with Resolve...

It's a licensing thing, not a technical one.

If that is indeed true (not sure if that's the only reason), then Blackmagic should offer a ProRes add-on option stat. There is simply too much demand for it, and I am sure that many Windows users would be more than happy to pay an extra $20-50 or whatever the license costs in order to avoid having to either keep a side Mac just for conversion to ProRes, or use some other 3rd party software to convert the files.

As stated many times, we offer what we can. Given how active we are with codecs both in Resolve and Resolve Studio if there were options to include any additional format we do. Fusion standalone is a completely different product category.

I doubt BMD will phrase it quite like this because the two companies seem to have a good relationship, but licensing is up to Apple. If they don't want to allow ProRes support on platforms that could potentially challenge their hardware + software offerings, they won't.

Notice that the only approved ProRes encoders on Windows are offered by software that does not at all compete with something Apple sells or promotes: Fusion, Nucoda, Scratch, Cinemartin, etc. Throwing ProRes into resolve would be like telling everyone "go ahead, don't buy a Mac and don't consider FCPX, it's cool."

The only other ways to get ProRes on Windows is through the reverse-engineered ffmpeg solution which can't really be integrated in most workflows and usually isn't even a consideration.

Apple doesn't care about the licensing profits, those are meaningless to their bottom line. They care about mindshare and maintaining a particular role in production environments without the threat of competition. Limiting ProRes engineering is an incredibly easy way to do that.

That's the part I would prefer to change. QuickTime sucks. DNx is every bit as good as ProRes, is cross-platform, and can be had in the superior MXF container.

The industry is moving, but slowly. We can't just tell the client: sorry, no ProRes any more! He'll go next door where he can have it…
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.
