Davinci/Computer Help

PostFri Jul 13, 2018 8:15 pm

Hey there folks. So i'm using a Lenovo ThinkPad Intel Core i5-4300.

ive been making music videos and live video recording sessions on davinci resolve but it lags so hard I cant really see what i'm doing until i export the video and watch it.

it hasn't stopped me from finishing my work but it is becoming extremely exhausting.

i keep trying to tell myself its ok and kinda like physical training with weights on lol

ive looked up good laptops for video editing and cant find anything under 1200 canadian (im in canada) which is way out of my budget. (funemployed caregiver of two)

im wondering if anybody has any ideas/solutions (as affordable as possible) so i can make my laptop a more well oiled machine for very basic video editing. do i need a graphics card? an external core or something? is there no other solution than just saving up to buy a new laptop?

thank you!

In your Project Settings > Optimized Media, set the optimized media size to Half Resolution and the format to DNxHD LS (it may not say LS, whatever the last DNxHD/DNxHR option is).
In the Media tab, select all the source clips, right-click one of them, and select Generate Optimized Media.
Go make a sandwich.
In the Edit tab, under Playback (?), select Use Optimized Media If Available.

See if that helps. If not, change the optimized media setting to quarter size and regenerate the optimized media. You might have to squint to make out the footage though.

Also read the chapter in the manual about optimizing playback.

You may also want to go back to version 12.5, which is a bit less demanding.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Hi.

I'm not convinced a laptop is ideal for Resolve. When you some time in the future will need a new computer for Resolve, will I suggest you to get a Desktop. It will also be cheaper for the same performance.

Lance: THANK YOU I'm gonna try that asap. Also: sandwiches 4evR

Uli: where can i find a download of 12.5?

Carston: Ideally i need to be working on this stuff anywhere (im a touring musician) so a desktop isnt really an option.

If your laptop can handle the resolution and codec needed in the end, you can even decide to use the optimized media.

You can leave that setting as is. In the Deliver page > Video > Advanced, there are a couple of check boxes that will let you control what type of media is used and quality settings. Set them all to whatever would give you the max quality.
