Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostMon Jul 23, 2018 7:29 am

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here, but I've read all your suggestions about installing DaVinci Resolve 15 on Ubuntu 18.04, but I still got a problem. When I start DaVinci Resolve I get start window, and then it shut down with information: "DaVinci quit unexpectedly" and of course it suggest to send report to BMD. I've installed CUDA and OpenCL drivers via Synaptic and still got this problem. When I check reports in OPT/RESOLVE/LOGS i get this:

Thanks Daniel, but at the beginning I'm sorry if it turns out that my computer doesn't have enough powerful hardware to handle DaVinci Resolve. Program showed me that what I have, should be enough for 1080p videos. If it turned out that despite the "god's blessing" it won't work, I wouldn't ask for help. :)

So now my GPU:

i don't think it's possible to run resolve for linux only on an intel iGPU.
although this possible on other operating system, i didn't read any success reports from linux users concerning such an setup.

you shouldn't install the nvidia-drivers and other vendor specific software on your machine, if you don't use this kind of graphics cards in your machine!

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

I'm afraid an Intel integrated GPU will not be enough to run Resolve. In theory it does have support for OpenCL but I have had no luck getting it working in the past.

Please have a look at the Configuration Guide.

I also know it's a tricky situation regarding Cuda. Resolve requires Cuda to be present even if you do not run a Cuda capable GPU and the libcuda packages tend to include the nvidia driver. Actually I think libcuda and libcudart only "recommends" nvidia drivers in most distributions but since most package managers are set to install recommended packages by default you end up getting both libcuda and nvidia driver.

i think, this behaviour of resolve -- i.e. requiring a cuda installation even in case of non-nvida GPUs in your machine -- should be simply seen as long standing serious bug!

it doesn't make sense to work around this kind of really important flaws by rather questionable tips and ugly kludges on the user side, which often entail a lot of very problematic side effects. this kind of bugs simple have to be fixed quickly by the developers/maintainers of the software as soon as they become aware of the issue (e.g. by bug reports from affected users etc.).

Hello friends! Totally beginner of DaVinci Resolve on Lİnux. I searched forums but no answer. I installed latest nvidia drivers on Manjaro Linux and dependencies. Can't figure out to launch. Got this message each time.

Hi! I have 15 beta 5 installed on Ubuntu thanks to Daniel Tufvesson's generous work. I'd like to upgrade to beta 7 (when he gets the script updated), and I'm wondering about the upgrade process.

Is it enough to just do
Code: Select all
dpkg -i resolve-beta7-blahblahblah.deb
or should I do something like
Code: Select all
dpkg --purge resolve-beta5-blahblahblah.deb
first?

Thanks!

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

I've successfully installed Resolve Studio 15b7 on Linux Mint 19 with
Code: Select all
sudo apt install libssl1.0.0 ocl-icd-opencl-dev fakeroot
and makeresolvedeb (i changed the version number inside the script)

My only current issue is Audio - i got an external USB Presonus Mobile Studio. It functions ok in all other apps but in Resolve the audio stutters when playing.

the Linux Sound settings Applications page starts flickering when Resolve is open ( between ALSA plugin (resolve) 100% / No application is playing audio )

flickering and stuttering happens ONLY with Resolve and is happening in sync.
My conclusion is that it captures and releases the drivers/device. Please fix

Also, the bug report won't get sent after Resolve crashes on exit. same issues were with previous beta 6

I have updated and verified makeresolvedeb for 15.0b7.

It looks like audio and full screen viewer is now working! :)

I'm glad you appreciate my work. The script is updated an tested now. When upgrading there is no need to remove the old Resolve package. Just install the new *.deb package on top of the old one and it will be properly replaced. Disk database and settings will be kept intact.

Thanks! Will update this weekend. Without MakeResolveDeb I'd have to forego the System76 drivers for my laptop, and who wants that? Your work is very much appreciated!

I would like to report that I successfully installed DR 15b7 on my Gentoo (latest ~amd64 branch). CentOS installer script worked flawlessly. Audio plays fine via pulse alsa plugin. Still to check jack alsa plugin for my RME audio interface. Nvidia Optimus GT 730M was detected fine.

I mostly have to edit consumer camera footage - i.e. AVCHD. These files are displayed in my media manager as audio only. I wonder what format I should convert them to edit in a free DR. The supported formats documentation is very misleading on this topic. I tried to convert to DNXHD in MXF format - to no avail. DR doesn't see the files at all. A solid advice is very much appreciated.

dnxhd/hr in .mov containers should work -- as long as you do not use a AMD CPU in your machine. in those case you would have to utilize prores instead.

I have an Intel CPU. Thanks for the tip. Video goes fine now. Embedded audio does not. I tried ac3 and aac. The original sound track produced by a camcorder is 2ch AC3 48Khz. DR displays both variants as present in Metadata, but the sound doesn't play and doesnt move the meters. The waveform of the sound is not displayed. What is the compatible sound format for MOV container in Linux?

DANIEL TUFVESSON instruction, but my davinci resolved 15 keep throwing segmentation fault. Hope someone could help me. Thanks!
UPD.
Installed opencl. Now I get "Davinci Resolve could not find any OpenCL capable GPUs". (It offers me to update configuration)
btw clinfo shows:

uncompressed PCM sound is in general the most useful one in professional workflows. this is usually not supported resp. standard conform in .mp4 containers, although some cameras embed it even in this kind of files, but it should work without any problems in .mov containers, which are otherwise very similar from a technical point of view.

Martin, Thank you for your help. combination of dnxhd and pcm_s16le in MOV container did the trick for me. I can work with my material now.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostThu Aug 02, 2018 6:19 pm

I've had Resolve 14 running on my Z840 workstation for the better part of a year, with very few issues up until this point. I recently added a 4K monitor to the room, and wanted to test 4K output from Resolve. When playing a UHD 3840x2160 ProResHQ clip in a matching timeline with matching video output, I'm getting slow playback – around 15-20 fps, with no nodes. It appears as if the system is utilizing the 2 Quadro K6000 cards, so I wonder what else could be causing this? Are the GPU cards not configured properly? Is it a simple setting or a driver update?

The same 4K clip is playing back at the proper FPS in Flame software on the same system.

Any thoughts are appreciated! Thanks.

Beta 8 is just released and it looks like there is a fix for the system audio stuttering.
General:
Addressed an issue where audio playback would stutter when using system audio devices in Linux

MakeResolveDeb is updated and tested for 15.0b8.

Thanks a LOT Daniel for this tool !
The Beta 8 seems to have solved the stuttering and viewer issue ! :D

Just wandering : any way to scale properly the UI on a 15" 4K laptop screen ? the rest of the interface is at 200% and I'd like Resolve to be also at 200% without having to switch to 1920x1080 each time I start the app.

Hi there I have a problem with the welcome screen of DaVinci Resolve. This is what I get when I started it:

I confirm the stuttering audio issue is gone in Beta 8, Linux Mint 19. Well done!

srgkus wrote:I've successfully installed Resolve Studio 15b7 on Linux Mint 19 with
Code: Select all
sudo apt install libssl1.0.0 ocl-icd-opencl-dev fakeroot
and makeresolvedeb (i changed the version number inside the script)

My only current issue is Audio - i got an external USB Presonus Mobile Studio. It functions ok in all other apps but in Resolve the audio stutters when playing.

the Linux Sound settings Applications page starts flickering when Resolve is open ( between ALSA plugin (resolve) 100% / No application is playing audio )

flickering and stuttering happens ONLY with Resolve and is happening in sync.
My conclusion is that it captures and releases the drivers/device. Please fix

Also, the bug report won't get sent after Resolve crashes on exit. same issues were with previous beta 6

And then you come back to ask the same question, expecting a different answer.

Once more.

It has to do with the way we assume the Linux port of Resolve functions at startup. It checks the availability of CUDA and OpenCL and then decides which one to use. If either is not found, Resolve cancels the startup, despite whether you actually have an AMD or Nvidia chip.

Of course, this is lousy for the end-user and BMD should look and fix the issue. However, the Linux port is developed at a merry pace and BMD seems to have issues pinpointing some of the gremlins. Many of them have come to fore only after the release of the Lite version.

Try installing CUDA (only needed for Resolve startup instead of actual use) or wait for BMD to come up with a silver bullet, your choice.

thewinner666, what's your GPU? That's usually a bottleneck.

Installed Resolve 15.0-1 on Ubuntu with the script from http://www.danieltufvesson.com/makeresolvedeb

Issue:
- When there are multiple tracks on a timeline and I want to open a clip in Fusion tab, it only opens the one which is on top of all others.

Edit:

its also depending on where the cursor is placed.... and not on which clip is selected

I managed to get Resolve 15 Studio working on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS. I ran a quick edit and grading test including Fusion and Fairlight. It all rendered out fine.

The only caveat was that it only starts when a monitor is plugged into it.

Has anyone had any success with starting Resolve in headless mode - either having it start from the terminal or via VNC?

Maybe more info about your config would be welcome if you want some help

Working fine here on a dell xps 15 9570 with a GTX1050Ti, latest nvidia drivers (with cuda and prime sellect), without any external monitor plugged in... Do you have any strange xorg.conf file or something else ?

My only issue so far is the scaling. I am forced to put my UHD screen in a lower resolution to have a readable GUI because Resolve doesn't seems to see the scaling command of the system (UHD with 200%).

I would like to piggyback on this interface scaling issue - it's pretty major when my screen is at 3840x2160 and davinci interface is sooo tiny while my whole desktop is tuned for the hidpi (gnome scaling factor 2, xrandr scale 1.2)
please make the interface scalable, thank you

currently on Elementary OS, everything works fine

So whilst Resolve "works" for me now, I do want to improve its performance, make Fusion actually work as well, and the biggest issue seems to be due to my old GTX680.

Does anyone have any proven cards in the $200-$300 range? I see the RX580 8GB is DaVinci's eGPU recommendation, but it'd be internal. The GTX 1080 is too expensive for me in the next couple of months, if it dips after the Nvidia announcement, maybe I'll bite for one, but I don't think I'd be able to justify $400 or more...

Hey there, i read and tested a while.. unlike on my main machine with an Nvidia card, i can't get resolve to run on my Thinkpad with a Haswell chipset - i thought i had it when i replaced opencl-mesa with beignet but no, it does not find any OpenCL compatible card as it states.

However while i read that some of you doupt that integrated Intel graphics work with Resolve, as i am aware of, it would work under Windows so i am not only confused but also kinda disappointed. :(

Actually when i agree to adjust the settings, there is no card to select but also interesting, it leads me by default to the media pool and complains that there is no folder configured (it is and it has permissions!).
..and as soon as i change and save anything, it simply dies away.

Right now /opt/resolve is owned by my user, both, the working and the not working install are on ArchLinux.

With this not working one i now tried in summary: opencl-mesa, beignet and intel-opencl-runtime.

beignet was always a very limited OpenCL implementation, which never did satisfy the requirements of resolve for linux AFAIK -- although i don't now, which features are actually missing?

intel already stopped the development of beignet and works on a newer implemenation: NEO, but unfortunately this new OpenCL stack will only run on more recent processors (>= gen8).

Good morning (o;

After I could run resolve studio in ubuntu 18.04 lts with a gtx1050 card I gave it a try now at home on Debian 9 and a gtx1060 card...

Resolve Studio comes up with the "DaVinci Resolve could not find any CUDA capable GPUs"...

Nope..wasn't that as blender showed GTX1060 CUDA support...

Debian 9 needs the 390 driver from backport: (Ubuntu 18.04 already has 390 driver)

Correct. Resolve 15 requires the 390 driver regardless of platform. You may get away with running the 384 driver if you switch to OpenCL but I haven't tested this to any useful extent.

Do you run resolve studio with your 1060?

Seems I can't use any of the studio features as it all eats up the 6GB quickly as with the GT1030 with 2GB only...

Think I have to try HitFilm Pro then as it only requires:

it's always a very troublesome challenge to support different cuda versions and driver release specific peculiarities for different applications on the same system. it's especially uncomfortable in case of closed source commercial software and very complex scientific setups, which take hours to rebuild. that's exactly the reason, why nvidia-docker has become the standard for exchange/deployment of complex GPU demanding setups in the academic world (e.g. machine learning applications), because no other existing packaging and sandboxing solution for linux provides the necessary adaptation of nvidia specific interfaces and mediated hardware access until now.

I don't have an nvidia/ATI GPU. Therefore I haven't installed any opencl and custom opengl engines.

Thanks in advance.

Re: DaVinci Resolve on Linux - Install issues

PostMon Aug 27, 2018 2:40 am

I started using Resolve on my NVIDIA laptop recently and have grown to like it. However, I just built a fully AMD desktop, and I can't get Resolve to start. I'm using Arch Linux (I know it's not officially supported, but it worked perfectly fine on the laptop.) On first startup after installation, I can sometimes get the first-run wizard to show, with the slideshow and then the system check, which shows a green checkmark next to my OS and my GPU. After that, when Resolve is starting up, the splash screen hangs at "LOOKING FOR CONTROL SURFACE" and then closes a few seconds later.

The terminal output is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary:
Code: Select all
[jacob@Impulse-WS ~]$ /opt/resolve/bin/resolve

The "ResolveDebug.txt" file doesn't give me much helpful information, but it does look like the crash is related to the GPU because the last lines in the file are GPU-related. This machine actually has two GPUs, a Vega 56 and a Vega 64. My display is currently plugged into the 64. It looks like Resolve doesn't think that either of the cards are plugged into a display ("Main display = 0" for both cards.)

The ResolveDebug.txt file is pretty long. I attempted to post it in a Pastebin, but I received an error on this forum that I'm not allowed to post URLs, so here it is inline:

A few times, I've ran the first-run wizard from the terminal, and after that completes, I got additional error messages during startup that I don't normally get. Here's the dump from that scenario:

I've found a few other people in this thread that had that "assertion failed" message, but none of them got an answer as to what it means or how to fix it. I'm not even sure if it's relevant or not, but I thought I'd mention it.

One other thing about this setup: I am using the open-source AMDGPU driver for display, but I do have the closed AMDGPU-PRO OpenCL driver installed, and Blender recognizes both cards for OpenCL compute.

Yes, i have edited a couple of videos on Windows with this setup (which is now more complete in my signature), as for Linux i am currently trying to figure out what's the deal with getting the audio part of my footage working. :x

any news on using amd GPU? black magic really needs to make this a flatpack, and fix some of the weird file locations, and gpu stuff. i would buy the studio ver. if they would put some effort into this.

Installed 15.0.1 on RHEL 7.5 with amdgpu-pro 18.30. Tested some projects, OpenFX, audio via decklink (Mini Monitor 10.11.2) and also native linux. Works perfectly so far.

Hardware: Asus Prime Z370 + Intel I5 8400 + Samsung 960 EVO MZ + 2x16GB Gskill 3200 DDR4 + AMD RX580 Saphire Nitro+ 8GB.

yes -- fixing the obvious flaws of the actual installer, would be really an important improvement, but the other claim -- i.e. flatpack deliveries -- is IMHO nearly impossible to realize right now.

unfortunately there is no working solution available, to realize CUDA acceleration from within flatpack sandboxes (something similar to nvidia-docker). in case of appimage, which is much simpler and less isolated from the surrounding environment, this hindrance is easier to overcome, but on the other hand it doesn't solve all the incompatibilities and dependencies related to the actual system resp. runtime environment...
