BIG BUG: clips don't copy & paste correctly between timlines

PostSun Sep 02, 2018 12:54 pm

...always to another timeline.

Either speeded up or slowed down they sometimes come into the other timeline as media offline. To get them back it's necessary to double click the media offline clip from the timeline into the source viewer, copy the in point t/c, then from the media offline timeline clip, find in media pool, double click into the source viewer, paste the time code and then do a replace clip function (F11).

Not a very enjoyable workaround.....

BIG BUG: clips don't copy & paste correctly between timlines

Copy paste to different 24fps timelines also doesn't work with any 23.978fps clips. The 'in' is completely different.

This is gawd awful.

UPDATE: It's not just 23.976 clips that paste incorrectly into 24fps timelines. It's also 24fps clips!!!!

Double gawd awful if others are seeing the same thing. The cldips are in long interview files.

UPDATE2:

I tried in different project, copying section of a simple GH4 24fps interview clip from a 24fps timeline to another 24fps timeline. The pasted clip had a completely different in point.

Sad to say this basic functionality is completely non-functional. A workflow I had planned; to copy sections of graded clips, is dead in the water without painstakingly adjusting each pasted clip's in.

I've tried every which way to duplicate this and can't. I've used DNxHD, DPX, h264, XAVC, speed changes, no speed changes, etc... and every single copy paste is perfect. My system is roughly similar to yours.

I also just finished grading 2 features with thousands of cuts in each, had to copy paste a number of shots there too (mostly prores source) and didn't see any issues - this was on a Linux workstation with advanced panels, so a bit different.

Just to be clear John, you tried copying between 2 timelines? Or in the same timeline? I have no issues copying and pasting in the same timeline.

@John

And if you were copying into another timeline the question I have is how complex was the timeline and how far in it did you do the pastes. The reason I ask is because when I copy to the beginning of a second timeline the clips copy fine. It's when I'm pasting a minute or so into the second, complex, timeline that they don't copy correctly.

I bet that the GH4 material could have issues with unique file naming and timecode conflicts. This will get you every time in workflow problems with H.264 DSLR material. We generally advise clients to immediately transcode to ProRes or DNxHD prior to editing, and give the clips non-conflicting timecode numbers so that there's never going to be overlapping names or numbers in the final conform.

DSLRs that restart file names as "0001," "0002," "0003" and so on every day are a nightmare in post. It helps if there's a DIT or a data manager (or an assistant editor) that steps in and changes the file names immediately after they're shot to give them a unique name, like 090318A0001, 090318A0002, and so on, which immediately sorts by date and camera file name.

I wish it was that simple :(

The 23.976 material is Red and Varicam 35 and both have the issue as does the 24fps GH4 clips. What's totally perplexing is if I paste at the beginning of a brand new timeline the clips are correct. But if I paste in a timeline that has 20 or 30 clips in it the video pastes are off. The audio pastes from the double system 23.976 wav files are correct (but I reported a bug with the system reading those wav files as DF a month or so ago so maybe that one was fixed and the video files weren't) I dunno. It's just totally frustrating because I can't see a discernable pattern to it.

No one from Support has asked for anything like a drp from me so I'm guessing this is a known issue. Maybe not, but the one person who replied here that he had no problem copying and pasting didn't answer any of my follow-up questions about whether he was doing the same thing that I'm doing. However....

Copying and pasting clips anywhere into a different timeline is such a basic function of editing, both documentaries and features, with stringouts and pancake style editing that it really should be fixed ASAP before Resolve's reputation as an NLE takes a big hit.

Some added info that may help: Undo does not undo the paste. It switches me back to the timeline where the copy was done.

The person who replied that he has no problems (me) is quite busy and doesn't spend that much time on the forum these days, sorry for the inconvenience.

Nevertheless...

I copied to two different timelines, inside a single project and with two projects via dynamic project switching, not once did I have troubles. This was a test project, so there wasn't a TON of media, but I did have overlapping timecode on the h.264 which all started at 0.00.00.00 as it was rendered output.

I agree with Marc's suspicion - one the biggest issues I have conforming from prosumer cameras is the tendency for overlapping metadata - timecode, filenames etc... but this usually only comes up in fairly large projects. The other thing I've seen that long-GOP formats sometimes slip by a frame or two either side. High percentage speed changes can exacerbate this though. I always prefer to transcode log-GOP files to DNx or Prores before working in Resolve.

But, I cannot recall ever seeing the behavior you describe, and I've been using Resolve almost daily since v5

Thanks John, but my copies/pastes would appear to be different.

I'm copying clips, both video and sometimes audio from the middle of one 24fps timeline to the middle of another. A few of the clips are h264 24fps long gop, but the rest are RED and Varicam 35 at 23.976 fps. Neither the h264's nor the 23.976 material paste with correct ins unless they're pasted at the beginning of a fresh timeline with no clips.

I exported and imported a drp to see if that made any difference. None.

Hi David

Do you have stacked/tabbed timeline views switched on? Or do you tend to switch timelines between copying and pasting?

Could you post a link to a drp file?
Please also indicate the names of the clips and the timelines you're moving them between.

Thanks

Hi Shrivanas,

I have tabbed timelines switched on. I tried it with stacked but the results were the same. I'll try it without either of them and report here if that makes a diff.. Meanwhile I'll get you the drp and info.
