BUG: Linux, hard crash on LJPG AVI

PostWed Sep 19, 2018 10:10 am

while searching for file format, which supports 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 and can by used by the free version of resolve on linux, to make some further tests on resolves color subsampling issues, i stumbled over an even more critical bug:

if you have an AVI file with LJPG payload (here a downloadable example) in a folder and you open this directory in the media page, resolve on linux will immediately crash (here is the crashreport)! :(

it's in fact a very rare kind of AVI files (although this kind of lossless compression is commonly used in [Cinema]DNG and has some rather useful capabilities) and i don't care, if it isn't readable/supported in resolve, nevertheless it shouldn't crash the application -- even less, when you just browse a folder!

btw. does anybody know any suitable file format of acceptable image quality, which supports 4:2:0 and 4:2:2 accepted by resolve for linux?

There is a list here, from the Support page, which needs updating but it’s a good start

thanks for the reminder!

although this list doesn't mention the various color subsampling variants, it was a useful inspiration.

so i did another attempt with jpeg2000, which should also support a lot of different pixel formats, but unfortunately also shows very similar issues in resolve for linux:
  • if you use jpeg2000 utilizing any of the YUV pixel format variants in an AVI container, it will also immediately crash as soon as you enter an directory containing such a file in the media page.
  • if you use the same payload in a MOV container, it will not crash on entering the directory, but the crash happens, when you try to open/access the file by any of resolves viewers.
  • jpeg2000 in resolve for linux only seems to work, if you use RGB pixel formats.

cause of this very frustrating flaws i still couldn't figure out any working file format, which would be suitable for accurate analysis of color subsampling related issues resp. accurate comparison of 4:2:0, 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 pixel format handling in resolve.
