Multiple camera setup

PostMon Oct 15, 2018 5:35 am

Hey all ...

Probably a noob question ... sorry. Have searched but can't find answer.

Have a BlackMagic Mini recorder. Want to do multiple camera setup - audio will be recorded simultaneously via Focusrite 2i2 / Logic Pro with 2 microphones.

Setup image attached to this post. Is an HDMI splitter sufficient? or do I need a second Mini Recorder?

Thanks in advance!

Splitters don't work in that direction, you need a second capture device. Personally, I would not capture the video with a computer if it didn't need to be streamed and/or switched. Easier to go with a couple decks for recording.

So a Mini Recorder for each camera ... ok, good to know thanks :)

I'm trying to create a setup that can be used both for livestreaming at gigs - I'm a solo guitarist - but also for recording performance & tuition videos for my YT channel. Can I ask what you mean by a "couple decks"?

I've attached the revised setup image ... can I assume the UltraStudio has software that can manage the two video inputs (one from each camera)? FYI I was given one Mini Recorder as a gift, so will need to buy the second one, the gifted one didn't come with any software/driver disk - can I assume it's available from the Black Magic website?

Deck is jargon for tape deck, synonymous with VTR (video tape recorder), used to record live video feeds for later use. They mostly record to solid state disks these days, but I never hear anyone call them disk recorders. Not useful for live streaming.

What you want is the Desktop Video software from the BMD website. They don't have their own software for streaming, but you can use them very easily with OBS.

Hey Jack,

You mentioned in the first reply that "Personally, I would not capture the video with a computer", but to run the "Desktop Video software from the BMD website", you have to use a computer ... no?

From what I've read, the Mini recorder allows the data to arrive at the computer uncompressed - I'd have it being stored to an external HD, assuming the files large. But I'd of course need the computer to run the Desktop Video software and attach to the external HD.

Again, I'm sorry for the dumb questions - I'm at absolute beginner in terms of how this all works :)

Image revised again and attached!

Sorry, that was ambiguous. I meant if all I needed to do was record video feeds, and not stream, I would use dedicated recording decks, and not bother with a capture device. In your case, you definitely need the computer.

I would also not try recording uncompressed video. You're looking at something like 10GB/minute for 1080p29.97, and a typical external hard drive is not fast enough for that. You could record in compressed h264 files with OBS instead, which you will also probably use to stream.

Hey Jack,
So does my image look OK? am I missing any pieces to the puzzle? Is my computer running the Blackmagic software or OBS or both?

I have no idea how well the iPhone will work with this signal chain. Your computer needs the Desktop Video package installed for drivers, and then you can stream and record using OBS.

Also, you can not use HDMI cables longer than 15-feet with the BM Ultra Studio.
I agree with Jack, I do not think this is going to give yiu satisfactory results.
Also, trying to record uncompressed signal is going to eat up hard drive space and give you very large files that will be hard to deal with.

You might want to consider going with two BM Micro Studio Cameras, connected via SDI to an ATEM HD running all in 1080p and record to the Hyperdec Studio Mini recorder, then go to your computer to do a live stream via the Ultra Studio.
