Fusion won't open gets stuck on black splash screen

PostSat Oct 20, 2018 9:16 pm

I have downloaded fusion 9 on 2 different pc's with windows 10 and have the same issue. It opens a black splash screen and just hangs..no error, no nothing. . I have tried every suggestion found from searching in the forums, and nothing works. Both pc's have different specs and different graphics cards, so i know its not the computers issue.

Any help would be appreciated. I really want to try fusion as a stand alone :)

Re: Fusion won't open gets stuck on black splash screen

PostSun Oct 28, 2018 5:18 pm

So after one by one killing processes in task manager I found nothing that conflicts and stops Fusion 9 from opening......However.....yesterday for the first time Fusion opened...I then closed it and opened it again ...I finally thought it was fixed somehow....To test my theory i rebooted the pc and tried to open again...but no it had the same issue getting stuck on the white/black splash screen.

This morning while laying in bed It was haunting me why Fusion opened yesterday and now it won't...what is this mystery!!

Then it dawned on me there was something I had open at the time I managed to get Fusion working....Davinci Resolve

So i booted up the pc this morning, and tried to open Fusion without success...I then opened Davinci and waited a minute or 2 then tried to open Fusion...AND PRESTO!...

So why Fusion only opens when Davinci is open is beyond me but it works.....

I have another issue with both Resolve and Fusion 9 and thats the loader node. When i load the node it is ok, but as soon as i navigate to a folder it crashes the programs.

Any help to solve that issue would be appreciated :)

For anyone that is interested i found the solution for stopping the crash with the loader node in both Davinci and Fusion. Simply run the programs as administrator.

If anyone can shed some light on why Fusion 9 will only open if i open Davinci Resolve first, it would be appreciated...cheers

I have two theories: Are you running Fusion 9 Studio or free edition? If Studio, do you have a physical dongle for it, or are you using a Resolve software activation key?

I have a dim recollection of a user reporting that Resolve Studio, if running, would authorize Fusion Studio, but if the user didn't have a Fusion USB dongle installed, then it could not be started on its own.

What's peculiar about it, though, is that I'd expect you to see the no license pop-up, not just get stuck on the splash screen.

Another theory is that you have an OFX plug-in that Fusion doesn't like, and for some reason having Resolve open prevents it from attempting to loan in Fusion. You can test that by temporarily moving all of your OFX plug-ins to a different directory so that Fusion doesn't find them. If that allows you to start, then you'll need to try to narrow down which plug-in(s) cause the problem. Once you've figured that out, you can blacklist them with the OFX Blacklist Generator script available in Reactor or here:

Thanks for the response....Hmm..well I am using both free versions of DR and Fusion and as far as I know I don't have any OFX plugins installed, but if i do I am not sure how to find them. I am wondering if it has anything to do with any of the Adobe programs i have installed or codecs...been trying to figure it out for weeks. At the moment I am just happy I can finally open Fusion at least and learn more how it works, great program :)

So the licensing system is out. There are several plug-ins for Premiere and AE that are OFX but are lazily written. OFX is supposed to be cross-compatible with any host that supports the framework, but a programmer who only tests in Adobe software may create non-standard code that works in their target host but is incompatible with Nuke and/or Fusion.

Check this path:
C:/Program Files/Common Files/OFX/Plugins

If there are any files in there, temporarily move them to a different folder—not a subfolder of OFX, but one outside that structure.

If that folder is empty or doesn't exist, then something else is the culprit.

I thought of something else. Your symptoms don't sound like this one, but if you have a Synology back-up system, that's been known to interfere with Fusion's start-up. Try disabling the Synology service (Windows+R, services.msc, find anything called Synology and stop and disable it). If that turns out to be the problem, I believe somebody made a batch file that will disable the service, start Fusion, then re-enable it. It will take a little time to dig it up, so I won't go looking for it unless you say that this procedure helps.

And yes, Fusion is a great program!

I remember disabling the synology backup a while ago in task manager but not the actual service which you just mentioned...So yeah i have a synology backup server....So i just disabled the http://prntscr.com/lmnpmi and then closed DR and Fusion...then tried to reopen Fusion and it worked...so I am not sure if it will still open after a reboot i will let you know but so far so good..appreciate the help alot thanks mate.

Alright! Here's a new startup file that should help. Save the following using a plain-text editor, and call it "Fusion9.bat"

Code: Select all
@echo off

net stop "Cloud Station Drive VSS Service x64"

start "Fusion" "C:\Program Files\Blackmagic Design\Fusion 9\Fusion.exe"

PING -n 30 127.0.0.1>nul

net start "Cloud Station Drive VSS Service x64"

One of these days I'm going to learn to lead with the Synology question. I always seem to forget about it.

Awesome thanks your the man!...And it was definitely that service. This morning i rebooted and started up Fusion without the need to open DR,so looks like that was the culprit.

One other thing you might be able to help with considering you seem to be a bit of an expert in these things.

Whenever I navigate to save a fusion file it crashes. It wont crash if i save in the default folder it opens to save in, however as soon as i try to drill down into a folder tree it freezes then crashes. I had the same issue with the loader node, it would crash. I have 4 EVO Pro SSD drives and have tried each one so I don't think it is a drive issue.

I have noticed if i run as administrator it does seem to fix most issues. But running as admin it wont allow me to drag and drop any images/videos into the Flow panel anymore, I must use the loader node, so not sure why that is.

I wouldn't characterize myself as an expert on performance and stability issues; I've just been hanging around the community long enough to remember a few things. I'll accept the title for workflow, automation, and foundational skills, though. :)

There is a problem that happens sometimes when a path, especially a mapped network drive, that Fusion once used is no longer available. It keeps a ridiculously long Most Recently Used list in the Preferences (months sometimes; it's absurd). Try renaming your Preferences file to Fusion.oldprefs and see if that solves it. You have to do this while Fusion is not running. If that solves it, then find that list of files in Fusion.oldprefs and delete all of the paths you find there. The section looks like this:
Code: Select all
      FileReq = {
         History = {
            { "C:\\Users\\Bryan\\Desktop\\CGG\\Garcia\\", 17778 },
            { "C:\\Users\\Bryan\\Desktop\\", 17784 },
            { "D:\\Downloads\\75-fbx\\fbx\\", 17795 },
            ...
         },

Delete only the individual lines with paths in them. You need to preserve the opening and closing curly braces. Once done, restore that file to Fusion.prefs and see if the situation improves.

"/%APPDATA%/Blackmagic Design/Fusion/Profiles/Default/"

I've got a non-standard installation at work, so that's from memory, but I think it should take you to the folder containing the prefs file.

Awesome that seemed to fix it ..thanks..one more thing this might be a stretch but I have noticed since I changed Fusion to open as windows admin it has disabled the ability to drag and drop any files into the flow window, is there a reason for that or a way to enable it again while running Fusion as an administrator? can only use the loader node.

It seems i cant have it both ways....if i dont run as admin then the loader node crashes when i try to navigate to a file to load....If i run as admin the loader node works but the drag and drop doesnt.....I guess cant have it both ways. :)

Wow, that's weird. I get the same thing. Googling...

It appears to be a Windows security "feature." Apparently MS thinks that drag-and-drop to a program with admin access is dangerous. Try holding ctrl while dragging. That seems to circumvent the lockout.

Yeah, the post I found that fix in (which I am now unable to find again) said it won't work in all configurations. It happened to work in mine. Another recommended solution is to install a third-party file browser, like Directory Opus, and run that with admin privileges. Two elevated programs can drag-and-drop to one another, but you can't drag from a program considered insecure (which Explorer always is) into one that has admin access. Apparently it's an issue that goes back at least as far as Win 7.

We run it on an old Lenovo (avoid this brand like the plague) with tons of RAM and Win7Pro (Win10 is NOT an option on this box). It generally pulls the same nonsense that you describe, but only after a cold start. Once it has run at least one time, Fusion behaves. Go figure...

Thank you Bryan!!

I was struggling so much with the exact same problem as OP and after searching a lot and trying several fixes, this finally made it! I find it kinda odd that Synology Drive is breaking Fusion Free but if it has to do with loading network paths maybe it's normal?

Anyway, I just created an account in this forum just to thank you, surely i'll use it again ahaha

Glad it helped you! I have no idea what exactly is interfering, other than it's specifically that service. It will block me from starting up, too, and I don't even have a NAS or any other network drives.

Just to add to this:

Bryan, Thanks!
Fusion didn't start at all here, but playing around in the prefs file did the trick. You showed me the path to the prefs file, so thanks again.

Long version:
I did a reinstall of my system (due to hardware failure) and after installing Fusion I wanted to change the path mapping a bit. But in the hurry I made a typo, and by accident hit Enter.
Fusion just vanished and I couldn't start it again, even after reinstalling and restarting and all that crap.

An uninstall procedure obviously doesn't remove the fusion.prefs file in the "User/myname/AppData/Roaming/Blackmagic Design/Fusion/Profiles" path, so the old typo was still in there.
After reading these posts I had a look, and there it was. I corrected the prefs file and everything runs smooth again.
