Let's be honest

PostWed Jan 09, 2019 10:28 am

Maybe a BMD Employee can write here when do you guys ship the blackmagic camera to the different countries.

We have ordered ours on November 2018 in switzerland and not even 1 shop have got 1 camera! I mean how this is possible. Are you waiting for something to happen before you guys shipping the camera to switzerland?

I would love to get an answer on this question from maybe a BMD employee.

I know the camera is everywhere sold out, but i mean after 2.5 months no one get 1 camera in a whole country, this feels a little impossible to me.

kindly regards

How do I get my hands on a BM Cinema Pocket 4k?! (Denmark)

PostFri Jan 11, 2019 10:30 am

Hi guys,

I've been signed up for the waiting list to buy the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K, in Denmark, since summer 2018.

Still NO news what so ever about the delivery to Denmark.

As a full time professional filmmaker, who has set to switch to BlackMagic, this is extremely frustrating!

Can anyone tell me when I should be able to buy one in Denmark or Scandinavia?

Hopefully someone can give me some intel, since the stores in Denmark got nothing to say.

Official Shipping Updates for BMPCC4K?

PostFri Jan 11, 2019 5:21 pm

Hello,

I was wondering if there is a post here that updates us on shipping updates for the BMPCC4K? It's been months and my order keeps getting delayed a month each time. Thank you!

AValive took my order on Jan. 3 and I had my camera in hand on Jan. 14. They're very nice folks, taking care of me by e-mail and phone communication. I was surprised how quickly I rose to the top of their already short wait list. Could be useful info to those based in the U.S.

Check with B&H this morning to see when new orders are shipped. If you order today, expect end of April or early May. Why does it take BM so long to manufacture and get the cameras to the dealer? By then, the URSA micro pro will be announcing. ;)

Boat ride from Singapore to Los Angeles, and then truck to the distributor, processing by the distributor, then distributor to retail. And that's if customs doesn't hold for inspection.

I have lost all my hope in getting BMPCC4K. Preordered in august, but still didn't got it. As I needed a new camera, I bought Panasonic GH5S. Right now I can't decide if I should cancel my preorder, or wait and resell it to someone that doesn't wan't to wait.

I received my Pocket 4K yesterday after just a few weeks wait (purchased from adorama.com).

I’ll have _much_ more to say about it soon, but for now I’ll just say “Wow!”. :-)

Going to say again.. BH had 1000s of orders.. they are probably the biggest distributor in US. If BM is truly sending out cameras to those that put in orders in the order they are received, world wide.. and they are probably not producing more than a few hundred or so cameras a day.. though ramping up (and this is purely speculation).. then you can imagine it takes BH a while to get a bunch of orders taken care of. I am curious if BM is learning a lot about how to manufacturer a very desired camera much faster with this camera. The first one was kind of a surprise.. so I doubt it had nearly this many orders at the start. The Ursa and others are expensive so doubt they had 1000s of orders given the price. The BMPCC4K hits a very affordable price point, and with so many videos even a few months ago showing the quality of the video and what you get, I will say again it would not shock me if they got 10x as many orders or more than they thought they would. Thus, if BM say announced a micro Ursa (first I have heard of this) or maybe even soon an 8K camera (since everyone else is starting to move into that direction), I do hope they plan accordingly based on cost, experience learned from this camera, etc. It would be great if they could wait on release until they have it very well tested, beta tested, feedback rolled in, and manufacturing ready to roll to cover lots of orders fast before they release the next one.

I think it's unfortunate that Blackmagic have been so silent. The lack of information only adds to frustration. Surely it can't be beyond the company to put out a statement every now and then to set out production levels and to give those waiting around the world some idea of when their pre-order might arrive.

In the absence of hard facts then rumours start to rise - case in point a Facebook post this morning:

"I have been told by my BlackMagic retailer that the bmp4k has halted its distribution worldwide for three weeks now, and they don't know when BM will restart it"

Probably nonsense but without anything official the gossip will reign.

I have cameras I am currently working with that serve my needs for now and the move to a P4K will be an evolution rather than a revolution for me as much of my exisiting kit will happily work with the new camera.

However running a business involves future planning and I am already scheduling projects for later this year and into 2020. It would be nice to have an idea of whether I can include the P4K in those plans or not.

I would like to assume that Blackmagic also have a concept of their future plans and schedules. I refuse to believe that within the company they have no projections for production numbers of all of their products nor scheduled firmware updates etc.

I just don't understand the public silence. It makes no sense from a business or marketing perspective.

That's a post from October from when the camera first started to ship. On the Facebook groups there have been a number of reports of dealers confirming a hiatus in production. I have preorders with two dealers in the UK and one contacted me to say that they had been receiving one or two cameras a week but have had nothing for nearly three weeks now.

In the absence of any comment to the contrary from Blackmagic it would appear there is a problem. The question is whether this is due to a component shortage or another more fundamental issue with the camera that has been identified.

The clerk I spoke to at Vistek in Edmonton, Canada said they are not receiving regular shipments and are not able to give any estimate on when they can fill orders.

Either Blackmagic needs to communicate or their retail partners will effectively be their voice.

It is a bit worrying that shipments seem to be in a hiatus. I pre-ordered my BMPCC4K in early May, and received it in November. It would be great if BM could share some info here on the forum about it to those who are still waiting on their cameras. It would also be good to get some news about BM RAW for the BMPCC4K.

Have a nice weekend everyone, hope you get your cameras soon,

Well, when i read your messages i'm getting more and more frustrated

Ordered december 7th from photospecialist in netherland (but ship in France because at the time of the order on their site it was "In Stock" :x ... )

I mean really BMD... Make a statement ! inform us, because not doing it means no good news i guess, but i would at least be more confident on my purchase even if there is bad news.. Your pocket 4k community will slam the door and leave for other brands...

MAKE A STATEMENT...

Re: BMPCC4K start shipping

I expected the BMPCC4K by November for a shoot in December. When it didn’t happen, I was confident it would be here in December. The Tokina Cinema-ATX 11-20mm arrived in December on schedule.

Well now we are in 2019, I feel calm and have a new expectation. There are several reasons why the shipments may be delayed. I trust BMD that whatever the reasons, it’s in our best interest and in the best interests of BMD. They’re a business and it profits them not to delay the camera so they share in your pain to a degree. I am confident something is coming and I can wait for it. Whatever it is. And I don’t presume to know what it is.

In the meantime, thankfully, I have the URSA Mini 4.6K PL with new glass which can handle most of my immediate client requirements (but not all so I don’t take this delay lightly either—my January project is delayed indefinitely waiting on the second camera).

At some point Blackmagic not releasing a note saying “Things are shipping like normal, there’s just exceptionally high demand and backlog” becomes a statement that things are not shipping like normal.

There's a plethora of reasons for an apparent halt in deliveries ranging from parts, supply chain issues, component price change issues, QC changes, retooling and negotiating to ramp up production, minor design revisions and, sometimes, the possible combinations of the above result in internal discussion in coming to a decision which further holds up the process. That latter or some variables that might be out of their direct control, may even stall them in delivering a message about this because the message may change based on the decision and there's the whole marketing debate on how the message should be worded. And all that has to be weighed against the impact of not delivering a message.

As we get closer to NAB more and more more to "wait and see" on their purchases so my guess is that they'd talk if they could or at least would if they saw a benefit to doing so otherwise they have to know sales will stall and silence will exacerbate the stall especially at this time of year.

It would be nice to think it was just a simple hold up in parts supply etc but if that was the case why not just say so and stop the rumour mill?

I think the lengthening silence while around the world dealers confirm that supply has halted can only point to an issue so fundamental and serious that Blackmagic daren't yet comment. The implications of having to refund or resupply all existing customers with replacements would be huge for example.

I hope that whatever the problem is it can be resolved quickly and in a way that allows the continued success of Blackmagic. The world needs Blackmagic to keep breaking new ground and revolutionising independent film making.

Strangely enough, the BMD is silent.

Hopefully this is not a problem with the BMPCC4K itself (?), which is first found and fixed before more BMPCC4K is sent and the damage is increased?

Our sellers have removed the BMPCC4K from their sales list. There are only 1 original BMPCC and 2 BMMCC left in his shop.

Well, I don't think it's some endemic issue with the camera itself if that means anything.

I got one of the first few and we've been using it on a number of pretty demanding shoots for months.
Aside from a battery getting stuck on it's first location - which I owe to the placement of the registration sitcker in the compartment - it's performed flawlessly.
Not a single issue in probably 25-30 shoot days.

I emailed blackmagic directly about it and got this response.

Thank you for your email regarding the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Our factories are working incredibly hard to produce as many cameras as possible and ensure that every unit that comes off the production line meets our customers incredibly high standards. Due to the huge global demand and the large number of cameras currently on back-order, it’s very difficult to say exactly when you will receive your order.

Production is at full capacity and so please keep checking with your reseller as they will be able to provide you with the most up to date information regarding your order. Sorry that I can’t be more specific at this time, but I can assure you that we are working extremely hard to fulfil every order as quickly as we possibly can. Thank you for your patience.

No, the dealer is willing to put people on their wait list. Like everyone else, they don’t have any in stock.

What bothers me the most is my inability to plan. Can I expect to have the camera a month from now? Two months? Can I accept a job for six months from now and be able to commit? If I see a really good deal on an accessory I’m planning to use for the camera should I buy it or is it going to sit in a box for a year?

In my circle, two colleagues have already given up BMPCC4K. The third one couldn't wait long and bought one on ebay for 1600 € (!) and is not satisfied with it in the end. His statement: "The camera is not suitable for wedding videos and simply switched itself off during the recording". The private seller does not want to take it back and the buyer should contact BMD directly. The seller does not want to take over any guarantee, because private sale!

Therefore, do not buy on eBay...!

Funny how you are now all over this forum posting negativity about the BMPCC4K.
Why does the camera 'switch off'?
There are several threads about this around the web and it usually turns out to be user error (cheap batteries, faulty or incorrectly formatted SSD's).

I've only said what I've experienced. And yes, it's negative that the camera just turns off during shooting. The colleague suspects that the (orig.) battery is defective. I can ask him again if he has found a solution. And where did I write something about BMPCC4K that isn't true? It's true that both I have had this experience and my colleague who makes wedding videos and for him it's very important that the camera runs reliably.

He doesn't use SSD because he had problems with it. Recently he has SD Card in use.

I'm making the point that many issues can be traced to outside factors.
You say your friend has had problems with SSD so switched to SD card. An SD card is really not sufficient for this camera.
I have the Wise SSD and it works like a dream. People like your friend say they are dissatisfied with the BMPCC4K when they actually haven't researched proper solutions. You don't buy something brand new and give up on it after a couple of days. At least I don't.
Does the camera switch off without warning when powered using the main power adapter?
If not, then maybe the battery is defective. Canon batteries are easy to find. Or you can take the defective battery back to the retailer and ask for a different one.

You are looking for negatives rather than looking for answers.

My colleague thought that the BMPCC4K was a good choice for his purpose (wedding videos) and after he realized that the camera was not suitable for it and also has a strange problem, he wanted to give it back. Why shouldn't he do that?

There is a new camera on the market and if there is a problem with it or it does not meet his expectations, then it is his right (within a few days) to return it. That is self-evident.

You are looking for negatives rather than looking for answers.

There is nothing negative about it, it is even regulated by law in Europe. Negative is to sell customers for stupid.

He's an experienced cameraman. To claim that he doesn't know that he makes mistakes himself is just not right.

Does the camera switch off without warning when powered using the main power adapter?

The battery was fully charged. No external power supply. It went from 92% to 40%... and then switched off.
He'll contact me later and I'll know more. Maybe one of you can help him.

Not being good for weddings is a judgement call. It's not a defect with the camera.
The video feature in a Leica M9 is not good for weddings either, is it a defective camera or just a poor choice of tool?

BMPCC4K is a new camera on the market. He tried it himself and is dissatisfied with the result. It uses EVA and GH5.

I couldn't wait and just called him. It was the battery!

Does the BMPCC4K have problems with red light/clipping?

If you want the ability to return you buy from a dealer with a good return or exchange policy like B&H. Ebay does have buyer protection but this isn't a defective camera. It was simply a bad (uninformed) purchase decision on his part. Of course maybe he just wanted to take a gamble but one should enter into that knowing full well the risks. At the very least as the seller IN ADVANCE about returns for lack of suitability (rather than defects).

BTW this is why I no longer pre order (not specific to Blackmagic product either). I won't buy something unless I can do an immediate return or exchange.

For whatever reason Blackmagic isn't yet able to meet the demand to the extent one can walk in and make a purchase at one's local professional video retailer. As NAB nears this makes many even more reluctant because there's going to be new announcements and while many such announcements are in advance of release, other companies are much better at giving a real target (walk in the store) availability targets. Sadly BMD has a long history of slow supply development. It's either part of their business model or an ongoing problem. I would never schedule around Blackmagic hardware products especially there seems to be some issues that require an immediate return, repair, exchange. In fact that may well be part of the reason for the current delays as they might be troubleshooting the manufacturing QC process itself. Returns cost money and on a low overhead product, the impact on profits might be significant.

BMPCC4K is very nitpicky about batts, you have to use genuine LP-E6s to get decent runtimes and (relatively) accurate percentage.

BMMCC is much more reliable and accurate in calculating percentage with genuine LP-E6 tho...
I'd say it's even better than Canon own cams...it's incredibly accurate.

A camera suddenly shutting off is not good for anything. Judgement call has nothing to do with this. Do you work for BM's marketing department or something? I find the tendency to belittle people's legitimate problems with BM cameras by some people on these forums to be ridiculous. Nothing will ever improve unless users ask for accountability from BM/better QC/etc. Excuses never solve problems.
