Pocket Cinema 4K not recognized in OS (win/mac) USB error

PostWed Nov 21, 2018 12:14 pm

Hi,

I've tried connecting the Pocket Cinema 4K on a Windows 10 Pro and Mac OS (all latest versions). Both computers don't recognize the camera. On my Windows client I get this error code in the device manager:
Code: Select all
This device cannot start. (Code 10) A request for the USB BOS descriptor failed.

Blackmagic Camera Setup ofcourse also doesn't work. Any suggestions / ideas?

Thanks!
Redmar

Are you connecting via a hub? Try connecting directly to your computer and via USB 3 Type A connector.

It recognized it for me. Are you trying to access it via the Blackmagic Camera software?

Try a USB2 port, if you haven't already. USB3 doesn't recognize the camera on the two Windows computers I tried.

Also, it could be a USB cable issue, as several other posters have discovernot all USB cables will get a useable connection between the ca era and computer, even for FW updates.

Thank you very much John! using an USB2 port was the solution!

Hi Rick, I've tried it through a hub and directly; on both Mac and Windows without any luck.

Thanks to everybody and it might be a good suggestion to add this tip to the manual ;)

Hey everyone- picked up my cameras and cannot make any headway on this issue using any of the solutions.

Tried all the USB types and different cables and got nothing.
Tried to look into the registry but couldn't determine the issue there either.
Tried to go through the Camera Setup program and it's just stuck on the connect camera screen.

I'm really scratching my head as this seems to be an issue but it hasn't been fixed?

I'm really stuck at this point so any other ideas?

Running Windows 10 64 on a Dell XPS laptop

Appreciate the assistance.

Have you charged the internal battery before this or did you take it from the box to the computer? I’m just wondering if the camera is powered on?

For me using an USB 2 port solved the problem. Maybe you can check with another Windows PC with USB 2?

Actually powered up the batteries as well as tried to use it while locked in with direct power to no avail.

I’m going to try the princess from my MacBook as well as my desktop PC and see if I get a different result.

Appreciate the feedback

Confounding when something doesn’t give you a hint. On the Mac, you can also look to see what’s happening with your USB connections via the About This Mac / System Report / Hardware / USB or something like that... see what it says before and after the camera is plugged in. If possible remove all other USB devices currently connected to keep it simple. And if you only reboot once in awhile, it might be a good time to do that after all your other devices are disconnected.

Hello,

I had the same problem. Using the short Samsung T5 cable USB-C to USB A cable the BMPCC 4K does not recognized by Windows 10. So I tried my usb-c to usb A charging cable of my LG V30 Smartphone. This one has been recognized. I use these cable for the latest firmware update 6.1 (BMPCC 4 K).

After the firmware update the first mentioned cable was ok. As I read the camera had before the latest firmware probably some problems with USB, which is corrected now, I assume. I use the standard USB 3.0 port (nowadays mentioned USB 3.1 first Gen).

Pocket Cinema 4K update issues.

PostThu Feb 21, 2019 10:35 pm

I updated my pocket cinema to 6.1 and when I hit record it locks up. Red time read out stays at 1 frame. Uninstalled and reloaded with the same problem. Tried recording with Samsung external, Cfast 2.0 card and flash. Would not work with any at any codec. Thoughts?

Some cameras are having a problem at 6.1. BMD is working on a fix. Downgrade to 6.0 for now.

The 6.0 was was released with improvements specific to UMP but I also learned from tech support that this can be used for the Pocket 4k as well.

If you had no issues with 5.2 original firmware then either install 5.2 or 6.0 and wait for new update skipping 6.1. In my case I had issues with 5.2 where I could not review ProRes files in camera and when I install 6.1 I cant record ProRes at all and just get 1 frame like you.

Today BM issued an RMA to my unit to fix the problem.

Pocket 4K cannot update from 6.1 to 6.2

PostTue Mar 05, 2019 10:09 pm

Any thoughts? :?

Tried on 3 different PCs, all Windows 10 64-bit. USB 3.0 and 2.0. Does not work.

I do not have access to a MAC, but I should not need to. Updating on windows 10 should work?

On Windows 10 I could not update — same cables as when I updated to 6.1. Then I removed my Metabones SB and attached lens, and installed the factory dust cap. Update then installed with no problem at all.

Cant update bmpcc 4k to firmware 6.2

PostWed Mar 06, 2019 3:59 am

Today was a great day, because my pocket 4k arrived in the mail. I noticed that there was a new update to 6.2, so I wasted no time in downloading the firmware. Unfortunately the camera will not take the update. Each time time click update the camera turns black and disconnects from the computer. The update eventually times out and gives me an error message. I have to unplug the power cable and/or remove the battery to turn it back on. I have tried two usb c cables and one usb c to usb 3.0. Two different computers, all have the same result.

Bug or broken?

Same problem. Just got my PK4 yesterday and tried to update from 6.1 to 6.2. Tried several cables (usb-c to usb 2.0/usb 3.0), two different computers (both windows 10). Also with/without battery, lens and memorycard. Camera setup starts the update but nothing happens. After minute or two it says "update failed". Setup window says that no camera or accesory found.

Of course full battery, the one that came with BM, but I also tried putting it on AC, so power is not a problem.

Try using a Type-C to Type-C cable. I updated with a Type-C to Type-C cable on my Windows 10 64bit PC and had no issues. Lens on the body, no memory attached, no battery installed, powered by AC adapter. Windows didn't recognize the Pocket 4K when I tried to use a Type-C to USB 2.0 cable.

My update attempts failed as well. I tried USB 2->C and 3->C. I tried reinstalling the update software and restarting my computer. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the camera's USB driver. The progress bar never went above 0%. My PC has Windows 8.1.

I don't know if this is a factor, my camera was one of the first to ship.

Both times I've updated without an issue. No battery, no card or media. USB-C to USB-C and with the camera powered using the included mains PSU cable.

Hi David,

Unfortunately, updating from v6.1 to v6.2 is not supported on Windows 8 as per the readme in the installation process.

I recommend you go back to v5.2 first, then take it up to v6.2. See if that helps.

Hi, try this:

  1. Uninstall all versions of Blackmagic Camera Updater on your Windows 10 machine.
  2. Reboot
  3. Download v5.2 from our support website.
  4. Install and update your camera to v5.2
  5. Uninstall v5.2
  6. Download v6.2 from our website
  7. Install v6.2 onto your computer
  8. Ensure camera is not connected via USB.
  9. Hold down focus button while powering on camera. It will start up with a black screen.
  10. Connect camera to computer via USB. (You will need USB 2.0 since you’re on v5.2)
  11. Run the Blackmagic Camera Setup again

See if this helps.

Are you using USB 2.0? With v5.2 you have to on Windows.

I just finish updating without a single issue.

My camera came out of the first shipment to B&H. When I updated I used a freshly charged battery (no AC power) and no memory cards in the camera. Also, no lens on the camera. I used the USB3 cable than came with my Samsung T5, and plugged into a USB3 port on my Win10 laptop.

My camera had been updated to 6.1 when it was released.

Maybe that can help someone who may be having problems.

Have tried new usb c cable, different usb port, power plugged into the camera, switching the camera on and plugging in prior to opening utility. Have completely uninstalled the utility, re-booted and re-installed with a new downloaded copy and nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion. I removed my lens, put on the dust cap, restarted everything but still only got 0% progress displayed for about 2 minutes followed by the "failed" dialog.

Very strange. Never got 6.1 to work. The camera would lock up. Went back to 5.4. Today went to 6.2. The camera locks up in any pro res but works great with BM raw. Thoughts?

Hi, try this:

  1. Uninstall all versions of Blackmagic Camera Updater on your Windows 10 machine.
  2. Reboot
  3. Download v5.2 from our support website.
  4. Install and update your camera to v5.2
  5. Uninstall v5.2
  6. Download v6.2 from our website
  7. Install v6.2 onto your computer
  8. Ensure camera is not connected via USB.
  9. Hold down focus button while powering on camera. It will start up with a black screen.
  10. Connect camera to computer via USB. (You will need USB 2.0 since you’re on v5.2)
  11. Run the Blackmagic Camera Setup again

See if this helps.

I tried this as well and now I cant go back to 6.1. Now I also cant go to 6.0.[/quote]

What is the error you're getting?
What is your Windows configuration? Is it Windows 10 Pro? Windows 10 Home? What is the build version?

I use Windows 10 Home build: 17763.348
I used multiple cables cheap and expensive ones and nothing works.

I'm now on 5.2 (because I tied to fix the issue) and I
tried to install 6.0 again after it was finished updating
my camera nothing changed and it still was in update
5.2

Kristian Lam... I tried you're advice but got the same result as John Green. Powering on the BMPCC4K with the focus button depressed causes the 6.2 updater to not "see" the camera.
