4K Cinema Camera SSD Time

PostTue Apr 30, 2013 9:49 pm

Hi Everyone, I'm Timothy.
I know this question is very premature and quite possibly won't be answered for quite some time. But, I'm preparing myself to buy the 4K BMCC and I wish to know how much time I get on an SSD untill it is full. Obviously SSD's come in different sizes, so I need to know how much time I'll get on... Oh, I don't know, maybe a 480gb SSD. I really appriciate your time to respond, and I cant wait to hear your answer. Thank you so much!

BMD hasn't announced yet the exact data rates for the compressed RAW CinemaDNG format supported by the BMPC-4K.

ProRes HQ at the max resolution supported by the the BMPC-4K camera (3840 x 2160) will be up to about 884 megabits/sec (or 398 GB/hr). The BMPC-4K's 1080p ProRes HQ consumes up to about 220 mbs/s. The attached table is from Apple's ProRes white paper which can be downloaded from:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/resources/

My guess is that compressed RAW CinemaDNG will consume 2-3 times the storage of ProRes HQ, but that's just a guess. I expect BMD will announce final numbers "soon".

According to my notes from NAB, a 480 GB SSD will record Cinema DNG RAW or ProRes for approximately 60-70 minutes in the Production Camera 4K.

So the RAW compression must be around 2.5-3.0 : 1

If compression on the BMPC4K is 2.5x, then I believe it approximately matches the time for the uncompressed raw on the BMCC. Both would be about 52 minutes on a 480GB SSD. I think Christine's reference applies to ProRes 4:2:2 (HQ) in UltraHD.

this topic has been covered in various threads.

but yes the compressed DNG would be at about a 2.5:1
