Cannot import BRAW files

PostSun Jun 30, 2019 12:05 pm

I am just getting started with my brand new BMPC 4k camera and resolve. First test was to shoot some material and import it to Resolve 15 software I loaded up from the software SD card that came with the camera.
Pro res files import fine, but BRAW do not. Drag and drop into the media pool does not work, but equally resolve doesn't even 'see' the files in their location on my HD.
In addition if I double click on a clip I shot through finder it Blackmagic RAW player launches but there is no clip visible or playable.
Any thoughts anyone?

I am having the same issues and cant see any of my rw clips.
I also uploaded Resolve with the provided SD card that came with my BMPCC4K.

Blackmagic, can you PLEASE provide an answer to help fix this?

With system detail i guess you potentially the file format you are recording is probably defined after the Resolve release you are using. If you download 15.3 from the Resolve support page you will likely see these files.

Anyone using BRAW files need to use Resolve 15.3.1.

People buying the PCC4K camera and using the Resolve software that comes on the SD card seem to run into this issue a lot. The Resolve software that comes with any of our products is generally not the current Resolve version, as we update it frequently. So anyone buying a BMD camera should not use the Resolve software than comes with the camera, they should download the current release version of Resolve from the BMD web site support area:

6K BRAW files require the use of Resolve 16.

Unfortunately I'm getting the issues with braw from the BMPCC 6K not being detected... but by Resolve 16. Do we have to update to 16.1? Presumably not. Any suggestions would be welcome please. The files play fine in camera but cant be imported or detected by Resolve or the Blackmagic RAW player.

What type of system hardware do you have? And specifically, what OS and CPU are you using?

A very belated thank you to Dwaine for solving this for me. You were right, all I needed was a resolve software update and it works like a dream. Cheers!

Same issue here. I just updated to the latest Resolve Studio and the latest Mac Os. Downloaded the 12k sample files from this website and Resolve does not see them.

Which latest? Only 16.3 beta can open 12k braw files, 16.2.6 can’t.

You have old system, update it, bmd can’t add avx set to old cpus just as it can’t make Resolve run on incapable systems.

I updated to DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.2.7 and it doesn't recognize blackmagic raw file that I've downloaded from official website, blackmagic raw section.

I'm using Macbook pro from 2013 late / Catalina.

What should I do?

For 12K BRAW files, you need to use Resolve 16.3b3 or 17b1.

Re: resolve 16 doesn't doesn't even see the BRAW from 6kpro

PostThu Apr 15, 2021 3:35 am

Just got my 6k pro shot braw and when I open resolve 16 it doesn't even see the files, let alone import anything as it sees nothing in the directory.
In the windows file explorer win 10 it sees the files fine and paly it fine after raw player from resolve installed.

Anyone knows anything about this please share.

Thank you.

Re: Cannot import BRAW files

PostMon Oct 11, 2021 2:12 pm

Hi there,

I've shot and edited a ton of video footage lately (~ 80 videos) in braw on my bmpcc6k. Problem is that while DaVinci and Blackmagic Raw Player could open - say 75 - of those videos hazzle-free, it could not do so for the remaining 5/80. Those videos are shot on the same day as other videos that I can open and work with but just won't seem to work neither in the Raw Player (black window) nor can I import them in Davinci Resolve (17.3.2).

FYI: As to store the footage I've pulled them from the SSD on which the videos were captured (T5) onto a local NAS and afterwards downloaded and edited them in bulks (not zipped).

Any ideas why I can open most but not all videos? If there is no solution for it I'll have to reshoot those.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn’t trust an Explorer or Finder copy to backup my files. At least use the Clone tool.
And then, a NAS should never be the only location a backup.
I hope you can recover those files, otherwise it’s a very hard way to learn that lesson.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

I'm currently having a problem importing BRAW into Resolve. This seems to happen the one or two times per year I try to work with BRAW.

Resolve 17.4.6
MacBook Pro M1Max OS 12.2.1
BMPCC 4k camera w/ software 6.9.1

- I can view the media in Blackmagic Raw Player which is installed
- When importing in Resolve, I can see clips in finder but they simply do not appear in the media pool

I'd be extremely hard pressed to explain that. BRAW Player and Resolve use the same code. If BRAW Player plays it, Resolve pretty much has to play it.

Are you saying the clips don't even appear in the Media Storage area on the Media page?

What happens if you try to drag and drop one from Finder to the Media Pool?

Hi @Dwaine Maggart.

Following from @GeorgeM post, I'm having the same issue, but I believe is related to the versions. I currently have the RAW player v3.0 and DVRS v17.4. I see the videos in the player but can't import them into the Media tab.

So, I assume I'd need to upgrade to DVRS v18.x. However, I've watched a YouTube video warning people about upgrading databases from v17 to v18 and am concerned about upgrading right now. The YouTube video was posted more than a year ago though, so I’m not sure how much has changed with further v18 updates.

I have ongoing work on a short film (working okay in DVRS v17.4). Additionally, I’ll be working on a new project with new footage (BRAW that currently can be played in the player, but not imported into DVRS v17.4). I’m worried that if I update to DVRS v18.x I’ll have issues with my short film.

Could you please advice?

Kind regards

You are correct to be concerned about making a major Resolve version upgrade in the middle of a project.

However, as long as you make a backup of your project database (now called Project Libraries in Resolve 18) and you make a Project Export .drp of your project (which you SHOULD be doing on a daily basis anyway, for any important projects) then you can always revert back to your current Resolve version, should updating to the current 18.1.4 version create any issues with your project.

You need to make the database backup and the project export BEFORE installing Resolve 18.1.4.

Once you install 18.1.4, as soon as you launch it, it should tell you the currently selected Project Library needs to be Upgraded. Once you allow that upgrade to occur, none of the projects in that Project Library can go back to a previous Resolve version. Which is why it's very important to backup the database and make a project export BEFORE installing 18.1.4.
