sound recording with Pocket Cine Camera

PostSun May 19, 2013 5:03 am

Can Black Magic enlighten us on sound recording with this camera: volume controls are menu driven, of course, but can they be adjusted during recording? Is there AGC as well? Is there headphone sound level control?

I've also been trying to locate the opposite of what everyone has in a hotshoe to 1/4 inch adapter, which is to go from a male 1/4 inch for the top of the Pocket Cine Camera to a female shoe mount that would take, for example, the Rode Videomic. All I seem to find is the other type of adapter, hotshoe male to 1/4 inch male or 1/4 female.

Let's try get audio working properly on the shipping BMC before we even get started on the Pocket please!

Chris, would you have time to outline the issues with the current BMCC and sound recording, please? Ahh...just found it, although there are a few things I don't understand in this series of detailed posts, but what I do get is that BM hasn't been terribly forthcoming about audio in their camera. Thanks for all the work, Chris.

As far as menu controls and similar are (so ignoring connections) the two are likely to be identical, it is the stated intention is for the firmware to be close to identical across the range (the BMPC will likely differ more than the BMPCC from the BMCC firmaware wise as its colour science is likely to be different).

Thus any features such as VU meters or better sound management internally on the BMPCC are more or less guarenteed to make it to the BMCC.

In general I agree with both of you, but I wonder if the reason why improvements in the BMCC audio graphical user interface (as opposed to audio recording performance) are so slow in coming is more due to hardware limitations rather than BMD having the time or interest in doing it.

For example, what if the original BMCC hardware doesn't have enough RAM available to implement GUI changes such as VU meters and such. I don't know how likely this is to be the cause for the delay in implementation, but maybe?

Now, with the new BMPCC pocket and BMPC-4K cameras, these have new circuit boards with at least somewhat different processor board chipsets compared to the original BMCC, so they hopefully have plenty of extra RAM, etc. available for implementing GUI changes both initially and later via firmware updates.

I know BMD has said they "hope" to implement the "same/similar" firmware on all their cameras, but I wonder if at some point that becomes impossible or impractical, especially with the original BMCC?

I guess we'll have to wait & see ...
