Pocket 6K ZERO Moire vs Pocket 4K

PostMon Aug 12, 2019 8:13 pm

I just got my 6K and did a quick test. Not 100% sure, but I shot a scene where the talent was wearing a shirt that had a high frequency pattern, and the 6K was flawless and smooth in both the BRAW and ProRes. The Pocket 4K however, was giving moire like crazy. I'm super impressed with the Pocket 6K, especially the oversampling of the 6K image and scaling to UHD is superb. Bravo Blackmagic!

Here's a still showing the comparison. Open the image in a new tab or download to see. Look at the shirt pocket and the bokeh balls. These were both shot at f/2.8 with the exposure the same with a 11.2 degree shutter and at ND .06. What's strange is that the exposure on the Pocket 4K is slightly darker even though they are the same. The Pocket 4K had a speedbooster and should be brighter. By the way these are at 200%.

Try this Picket 4K without the Speed Booster, is the Moire still there. The SB is sharpening the lens image, which increases Moire issues.

Hey Denny, I wish I could test it without a speedbooster, but I Don't have a dumb mount adapter. It's interesting that with the speedbooster it's darker. Also, the bokeh balls are bigger and the bokeh is smoother on the 6K. So speedboosters are an interesting magic trick, but not the real McCoy.

I would guess it’s the SB as well. Tests that I’ve done in the past show more sharpness in the center with a SB than without.

I did some more tests indoor controlled and the 4K with speedbooster is definitely brighter than the Pocket 6K. The light must have dipped a little outdoors when I did the first test.

Very nice! My only real complaint about the 4K version was the moire on those tight patterns. Very nice!

Pocket 6K ZERO Moire vs Pocket 4K

Will, the 4K shot does show some onion bokeh compared to the smooth 6K. But what lens was used for the shots?

The contrast is significantly higher on the 4K with SpeedBooster. Why? A different lens might be accounting for these differences, not just the addition of the SpeedBooster.

Hey Rick, I used the same exact lens on both cameras. A Canon 24-70mm f/2.8II. The Pocket 4K does show more contrast. Also the Pocket 4K shows green axial chromatic aberration. The Speedbooster is a nice magic trick, but man does it come at a cost. You can't cheat physics.

Will do you think the green CA is due to the SpeedBooster? Are you using the new SpeedBooster designed for the BMPCC4K?

The pixel scaling in resolve could be the issue view both at 100%
