Resolve needs MagicYUV !!!

PostFri Sep 06, 2019 1:52 am

First I should say as a Windows user, Resolve should use ANY Codec I have installed already. But since it doesn't and since Prores is Useless on Windows, We need a Proper Codec for Multi-Generational Use. Ancient Avid Codecs that haven't been updated in 5 years is simply Not Good Enough!!!

I know many clients that will routinely accept DNxHD444 and DHxHR444 for final delivery. And in truth, Netflix has been going with OP1A more frequently, and that's a major force in post production these days.

Is it mathematically lossless?
"Unlike visually lossless codecs, MagicYUV is mathematically lossless, meaning that the decompressed output is bit-by-bit identical to the original input."

And will it open in post software like Mocha Pro and AfterFX?

Apple has screwed both the Game and the Film industry by killing Media File Types and SDK's. None of their tools will Ever be in my studio again!!

I only worry about what my clients ask for. If we can give them what they ask for, if the results look good for QC and on the air, and if we get paid on time, then all is well. That is literally all we care about.

DNxHR is as good as ProRes.

Then use DPX, TIFF, EXR (there is lossless compressed mode) or 10bit uncompressed RGB.
I worked with MagicYUV developer on this codec and it's good, but without native support in many apps it's just yet another codec. He tried with Adobe, but they were not interested.

most of the recent common codecs (h.264, h.265, vp9) also support mathematical lossless en/decode profiles!
in case of nvidia graphic cards, it's even supported in a hardware accelerated manner.

Can Resolve output a true mathematically lossless h264 ? What settings?

i don't think, resolve actually provides this option, but it's definitely available in the nvidia codec sdk and supported e.g. by ffmpeg.

This leads to storage issues at 4K you are talking just over 50 Megs a frame. It's much better to use a Mathematically lossless method. Otherwise you are buying hard drives weekly to store current and past jobs.

When your video has grain/noise your gain from lossless compression will be marginal. From typical around 2x it may go down to eg. just 20%.
EXR has lossy and lossless modes as well.

Not sure if there is still any interest in this topic, but...

The developer has announced a new version of MagicYUV that includes an Adobe plug-in. That may make it more popular and thus useful as an intermediate.

He has also stated that "others" are possible. Maybe Resolve?

Resolve is not possible as only BM can add codecs to it. You would have to convince BM to do it.
Adobe is different in this aspect- you can write your own import/export modules.

Just emailed the developer and this was his reply:

Hi Marc,

You're not the first person to ask, and I'd love to add it to Resolve, but I'm not sure if Resolve has a public SDK for developing import / export plugins.
Are you aware of any import / export plugins which add a custom format to Resolve, so I can take a look and investigate?

Hi all,

I'm the developer of MagicYUV and Marc told me about this thread.
As he quoted above, I'd love to add MagicYUV support to Resolve, but I'm not sure how.
Is there any Resolve SDK available that would allow developing an import / export plugin?

I did a quick research, and I've found that Resolve supports OpenFX plugins, is that true? If so, then there is a package called openfx-io, which supposedly implements various import/export plugins through OpenFX: https://github.com/NatronGitHub/openfx-io
Has anyone ever tried to use them with Resolve?

Me too; I'd love to see MagicYUV export available in Resolve and, if possible, for loading MagicYUV-encoded video clips into Resolve. (It looks like HitFilm Express now supports it, as I managed to load a MagicYUV clip into it and it played with no problem.)

We have now support for export plugins, so adding export support is now very possible and should be relatively simple.
I hope you are well :)

Are there any updates regarding new Davinci Resolve 18? Can this codec be added now as encoder?

Hmm...must read it badly. Answer still the same though- nothing changed.

MagicYUV can be accessed through ffmpeg, so voukoder plugin could enable it (if not already possible).

Hi everyone!
The latest release of the codec (2.4.0) now has an encoder plugin for DaVinci Resolve Studio.
More info on the website (https://magicyuv.com).
