MacPro, Quadro 4000 and Resolve. Kernel panics! =(

PostThu Sep 13, 2012 3:51 pm

Have ANYONE on planet earth managed to build a stable system with the Quadro 4000? :?

I have constant kernel panics and 2-3 jsut from booting the system. Always the same kernel panic and related to NVIDIA drivers.

I have talked to other peeps and searched the net and it doesn't seem to be uncommon with the quadro on mac. So the question is... What do people run and how have you confed it? Software- and hardware wise...

This is a MacPro5,1 (mid 2010) with 12 cores. It has 24GB ram and ATI5770 in Slot 1 and Quadro 4000 in slot 2.
Running 10.8.1 now but have tested on 10.7.3 too. All clean installs and no SW installed other then Cuda and latest Nvidia drivers. I have repaired diskpermissions as root since that have been suggested by Adobe when users have had similar problems.

Thanks

Hi Henrik,

We have probably now deployed nearly 100 systems using Mac Pro and Quadro cards and I cant say I see many kernel panics, those we do see are unrelated to resolve or the GPU.

Are you using a Quadro from PNY with the Mac qualification? Is the power connected? If you remove the 4000 and run just on the ATI does it stop crashing?

Have you tried another 4000 card?

Hi Jamie

It's a PNY for Mac. Power is connected. Without the q4k the machine works fine. I have not tried another quadro simply because this is the only one I have.

What OS version are you using?
What driver version are you using?
What slot odo you have the Quadro in?
How much memory in your builds?
How many cores on those macs?

Cheers and thanks.

Since you are using OS X 10.8.1, just about any CUDA capable NVIDIA card you can fit into the Mac should work fine as a Resolve GPU. Certainly the majority of MacPro systems in the world are likely using the Quadro 4000, as that was our only officially supported, currently available GPU card for a long time.

The GPU driver in 10.8.1 will support the Quadro 4000. We currently recommend CUDA version 5.0.17. I'm not sure how well the current 5.0.24 version works.

We recommend that all graphics cards be in x16 slots. This means slots 1 and 2 on a Mac Pro. You are using the correct slots.

Your memory and CPU are more than adequate for Resolve.

If you haven't already, I would recommend you use the CUDA-Z app on the Quadro 4000 card, and see if that causes any issues. If you have a flaky Quadro 4000 card, CUDA-Z MAY show this. But the only way to know for sure is to exchange it with another card. You can find CUDA-Z with a Google search. You should use version 0.6.133. On the CUDA-Z Performance tab, select the Heavy Load Test Mode checkbox and see how it behaves.

THe card works in slot 4 but in slot 1 and 2 there's constant kernel panics. I have also flushed the NVRAM/PRAM several times today, with the card in and without the card in. Installed CUDA-Z today but found it to be somewhat of a disappointment. Hoped for it to be more like GPU-Z with a human readable load graph so you can make sense of it. =/

Nvidia is involved in this too but I have little hopes of it to ever get solved. WHen searching on the net my case is far from isolated even thought he experience here on the forum seems to be good. :?

If this doesn't work out I might build a windows rig instead so that we're not so limited to form factor, pci slots etc.

What you are seeing is not normal for a Quadro 4000 card. Very weird that it works in slot 4 and not in slot 1 or 2. Unfortunately, putting it in slot 4 will not work well for Resolve performance.

I don't know if your issue is with the card or with the Mac, but it seems like the next logical troubleshooting step would be to acquire another Quadro 4000 card SOMEHOW from SOMEWHERE to determine if its the card or the Mac. Or, put your card in another working Resolve system. If you can't do that, I don't know how else you can troubleshoot this any further.

Yep, seems like the card is borked. Tried it in another macpro this morning and have intermittent problems with it. It was a loaner card and it will be sent back for replacement.

But will look for something else then a Quadro 4000. Have anyone tried a GTX670 as second GPU for resolve in Mac? The 570 should work with the new drivers but will the 670? Enough power?

The GTX670 will work if you are using Mountain Lion 10.8.x. You would probably want to get the 4GB version if you plan to work on material larger than HD.

But would it work in the tower or only in cubix? Also, wouldn't you have to patch some files to see more than 2GB on those cards or is that fixed by now in 10.8.x?

Fortunately people WAY smarter then I could ever hope to be, have figured out a work around. Unfortunately, their jargon, and a lot of basic assumptions on basic knowledge is beyond my understanding, so the first time I looked at their solution, I passed on it as it was over my head.

If you use the cards with the two 6-pin connectors, they work in the Mac Pro tower. There some some over-clocked models with a 6-pin and a 8-pin connector, so stay away from those.
