EF or MFT?

PostWed Jun 05, 2013 5:09 am

As many other people, I placed my order for the original BMCC early last year when it was first announced.
Then I switched to MFT as soon as it was announced. Then I waited and waited for news on the MFT while EF´s were being sent out to customers, including many who had only recently ordered.

We all know this situation and I think BM have made a huge PR blunder in the way in which they have chosen to handle the situation and have tarnished many customers trust for the company.

Now on a brighter note, for all of you waiting (in vain) for the MFT, I cancelled my MFT and ordered a EF which arrived within a week and can say that the camera works perfectly with adaptors (I use Leica, Nikon) and the quality the images the camera produces is truly amazing!

So for all of you waiting for the (passive) MFT but are NOT planning on using MFT made lenses, the use of adaptors is not an issue.

I was in the same boat. Switched my order to MFT in hopes of using the SLR Magic 12mm for my wides. Even though the rest of my lenses 17-200 are Canon FD. Couldn't take the wait any longer. Called Meirev, my rep over at Adorama, EF's in stock, picking one up tomorrow. Just can't delay projects any further. Will still probably get pocket cam when it is released. Looking forward to that sweet DR.

The Canon FD lenses won't work on the EF mount tho. Have you got other options?

There was a sticky post on bmcuser about some sort of adapter causing damage. Check it out to be sure.

Sure they will. I've been using them with my 7d for years.

And you are not having issues with infinity focus?

The Flange Focal Distance of the Canon FD is 42mm. 2mm shorter than the EF Flange Focal Distance.

To get it to focus to infinity you would need an adaptor with a lens element to correct this or you would need to modify the FFD of the mount.

Yes, you are right. The adapter has a built in optic to make up for the flange difference. Which also unfortunately increases the crop. But, I just don't have the luxury of waiting for the MFT any longer, which would have been better for me.

I was browsing the Blackmagic forums and comments and I ran across this thread.

I've designed a FDn to EF lens conversion kit because the adapters force you to compromise on infinite focus or image quality. I love using my FDn 24L for landscape photographs. I do HDR work now and then and the FDn 24L is now my favorite for these shots. I've come to find that several of my customers are using this lens for Video work.

The thread on the FDn 24L is on plant5d.com
