NVIDIA Studio Driver 441.12,.28 (GPU decode of BMRAW crash)

PostTue Nov 05, 2019 3:02 am

NVIDIA put up an updated Studio Driver this afternoon. Looking over the release notes, nothing leapt out at me that pertains to DaVinci Resolve. I rather suspect that updates are more focused on Adobe's new releases.

I went ahead and updated, but if you're in the middle of a critical project and things are going well I would suggest waiting a week or so before updating.

ETA: Report that this driver fails playing BM RAW, causes DR to hang. I have verified this failure. If you wish to use this driver with your BM RAW footage, you'll need to switch off GPU decoding of BM RAW.

The driver has just been updated. It is recommended not to update. Because DR16.1 will crash.

If you're running 16.1 and it's crashing, it is recommended that you update to 16.1.1.

So far 16.1.1 has not crashed for me with the new driver.

After the new driver is installed. Enter the DR16.1.1 editing interface and I will crash as soon as I drag the red timeline. I returned to the previous driver version. everything is normal.

Duplicating problem with braw. Playing one of the Wedding clips from the BM website, as soon as I press Play in the timeline, it hangs. This is from a test project that previously worked.

Will be rolling back to 431.86

ETA: While waiting for 431.86 to download, did a bit of experimenting. The hang repeated a second time. For the third attempt, I switched off GPU decoding of BM RAW and it played.

ETA: Rolled back to 431.86. Does not hang with GPU decoding of BM RAW. One possible clue: when I installed 441.12, I had to reboot my computer. Not necessary with 431.86

"Brick" is a bit strong. If it happens, it doesn't break your computer to the point of being unrepairable by mere mortals.

But it will hang DR so badly you probably will have to open up Windows Task Manager and kill the DaVinci Resolve task.

I can confirm this using the same driver on Resolve Studio 16.1.1. Playing BRAW freezes/crashes Resolve.

Can confirm as well. 2080ti - 441.12 = Hangup after selecting a BRAW clip, rollback to 431.86 smooth again!

Crashing here too on playback. Two 1080 TI graphics cards. If only 1 GPU is enabled it works fine. When I enable both, Resolve plays for a moment then gets a white screen and crashes. Happens every time.

Here to report the same issue, I had to go back to 431.86. Nvidia made me think I had to get a new PC. I thought it was breaking. Haha. *Wipes off the sweat from forehead* It made me go insane. I could edit in 4k video timeline and I couldn't after updating. I tried everything and then finally realized it was the update. Wow.

I can confirm experiencing the same issue. Playback in the media pool tab of any BRAW file crashes DR after the first clip is played back.

Studio Driver 441.28 was released by NVIDIA today. The release notes include the following under Open Issues:

[Resolve]: The application may crash during timeline playback when using Blackmagic RAW CODEC media. [2753421]To address this issue, roll back the NVIDIA Driver to version 436.48.

Version 436.48 would apply if you are using a GTX card with a number lower than 1000. If using a GTX 1xxxx or RTX 20xx card, continue to use Studio Driver 431.86

I experience the same issue with video files from an Atomos Ninja V (DNxHR HQX and Nikon Z6)... Not only BRAW unfortunately.
