Benq SW 271 is good for video editing?

PostWed Nov 27, 2019 10:35 pm

I have a black friday oportunity to buy a Benq SW 271 at 1000$ with VAT. This monitor dosen't cover Rec 2020 standard. Benq SW 271 have 99% coverage of the Adobe RGB color space, this monitor also covers 100% of the Rec.709 and sRGB color spaces, 93% of the DCI-P3 color space, supports High Dynamic Range (HDR) and HDR10. Worth to buy? If not what monitor you recomamand me in same budget?

It's not bad. Just forget about HDR mode as it does whole 350nits max (and contrast at 800:1). Those are no near HDR needs values. The weakest point is uniformity. This will show up in every day usage. It's not very good, but not crazy bad. Other than this it calibrates very well to Rec.709. Contrast is not the best as well, but should be enough.
Maybe better deal is LG OLED, but this will be more money (although UHD, HDR etc and proper/big video preview).
UHD resolution in 27inch is questionable. Pixels are tiny. Videos will look smooth but you won't see edge details (if you need to).

Off the the top of my head I don't think any regular computer monitor currently on the market is going to do a good job grading rec 2020. Fo that, I believe you're still talking a higher-end television, or a proper reference monitor $$$.

Forget about Rec.2020. No one grades to it as there are no monitors or TVs which support it.
If you think about wide gamut than P3 is your target.

Apparently you can buy LG OLED B9 for 1000$ on Black Friday deal. This would be good buy I assume. Better than BenQ monitor for video needs.

Like Andrew Kolakowski said, forget about any HDR color space, to properly grade those is going to cost you a lot of $$$.

for example: $31k at release in early 2018
https://www.eizo.com/products/coloredge/cg3145/

What you want is a true 10bit monitor with 100% coverage of the SRG/rec.709 color space in the 32" size range.

I have seen both good and bad reviews for this monitor, when it was first released they had sample to sample uniformity issues, I'm not sure of that's fixed now or not.

The 271 can be used for video editing, but at 27" the pixel density is 163 PPi. At that destiny it can be hard to see edge details without zooming in. at 32" ppi drops to 137, while still not great it's better. If you get a LG OLED B9 like Andrew mentioned they start at 55" so ppi is 80, and thus it's very easy to see details, and its also the size screen people are going to be watching on in their homes.

A lot of professional colorists have relatively crappy monitors, but a really nice calibrated tv. For example take a look at this marketing photo pulled directly from BM website. Two random monitors that aren't even the same size or model, and then a really nice TV hung on the wall behind at a realistic viewing distance. Unless your a professional at a decent level, you propbabbly don't have the $$$ or space for a setup like this. Thus, most amateurs or lower level professionals go with computer monitors, and above 32" quallity really starts to drop off.
Image

The 271 is more photographer oriented because it has 99% coverage of Adobe RGB. That's a color Space that's more important to photographers who are actually going to be printing their work.

Take a look at this color space chart. A simple way to think of it, is the bigger the triangle the more its going to cost you.

If you can wait they are supposed to release the new PV271 soon which will have SDI inputs (12G) and onboard calibration. According to some articles online it's expected end of 2019 or early 2020. Another one to look at would be the newer SW270C. It's supposed to be more uniform than the SW271 and it's cheaper but also only 1440p (2560x1440). B & H actually lists the SW270C as the newer model when you look up the PV270.

This article talks about the upcoming PV271

PV271 won't cost 1K$ for sure.
I expect more like 3K$ or if it's really HDR then 5K$ price tag.
Looks like it's also late. It was announced long time ago and still no finish product.

The cheapest "HDR" capable UHD monitor on the market right now is the roughly $1500 USD ASUS ProArt PA32UC.

Even it has some issue after calibration that take it above the 2.0 delta-E threshold. However as you would expect all the marketing documentation uses the averages that are below 2.0.

Hey Dan, how would you go about displaying HDR on that BenQ (or any HDR capable) display? This is the problem I'm trying to solve (monitoring HDR while editing Rec2020 in FCPX) and the Ultrastudio 4K Mini is a great price for HDR output, but this does NOT display HDR on the BenQ or, as far as I know, any standard computer monitor. The HDR capability of monitors like that are for playback from gaming consoles and other HDR playback devices (HDR10), but not editing.

So with that in mind, when you say that what you want is a "true 10bit monitor with 100% coverage of the SRG/rec.709 color space", how do you mean to view that? If you're just connecting this display to your Mac normally over Thunderbolt or HDMI, I don't believe you're going to see anything other than a simulated HDR image, and not what you'd get on playback on, say, an HDR TV or an HDR smartphone.

If the objective is to edit HDR for consumption on consumer HDR displays, what's the pathway for editing? I can walk into Costco and get a pretty awesome looking, huge 4K HDR display for under a thousand bucks, but I don't think there's any way to play HDR content on there from the Final Cut (or any NLE) timeline. Right?

It's right about now that we realize the $6,000 Apple XDR display is actually a really good deal… yikes.

cheers

Andre and I where both basically saying ignore HDR for now, and get an accurate monitor for general purpose grading.

If you want to get into HDR grading, then the first thing you (generalized you) need to decide, is what HDR means.

To the average consumer HDR just means a really really bright image. A lot of tv & monitors currently on the market claim HDR support. However it's not what most members of this forum would consider HDR.

  • HDR 400 400 cd/m2, 8-bit, 95% 709 coverage
  • HDR 500 500 cd/m2, 10-bit, 99% 709 coverage, 90% DCI-P3 coverage
  • HDR 600 600 cd/m2, 10-bit, 99% 709 coverage, 90% DCI-P3 coverage
  • HDR 1000 1000 cd/m2, 10-bit, 99% 709 coverage, 90% DCI-P3 coverage
  • HDR 1400 1400 cd/m2, 10-bit, 99% 709 coverage, 95% DCI-P3 coverage

Here you can see even finer details of the above spec, like black level etc.
https://displayhdr.org/performance-criteria-cts1-1/

Members on this forum are usually talking about rec 2020/2100. Both of these standards are much more expensive, because they use a much larger color space on top of the 1000 nit requirement.

Image

The ASUS ProArt PA32UC $1200-$1500 will get you up to HDR1000, but its not going to touch rec 2020/2100 with a claimed coverage of only 85% rec 2020.

a review of the PA32UC.

85% of Rec.2020 is actually decent. Rec.2020 is more a theoretical color space for now. You should be looking at P3 as wide gamut option.

asus sells an even better model, the PA32UCX. However if I was planing to drop $4k on a monitor, I don't think it would be an asus model.

Why not? It looks really good on paper. I could not find any actual reviews or experiences from anyone using it to grade video. But compared to the similarly priced Eizo CG319X it seems to have more colors and better brightness range. So what is the problem with the Asus?

It's incredibly difficult to find decent information on monitors in this price range. So any input is welcome.

Also, Dell released a monitor in the same price range, the Dell UltraSharp UP3221Q. All three (Asus, Eizo and Dell) cost ~ €4.000 here in Germany. If anyone can share any experience with any of these, it would be greatly appreciated. Other then some technical details it is really difficult to get information relevant to grading on these.

Eizo has no real HDR monitor for 4K Euro, only very expensive and good ones.

CG319X has presets for HDR modes, but this is not useful for grading. This monitor peaks probably at about 400nits and has 1500:1 contrast which is no near good enough for any proper HDR work.
It's a great monitor, but not for HDR work.

All good HDR monitors are very expensive and there is nothing in between, except mentioned ASUS, Apple etc., but those have limitations.
For 4K Euro your best bet is one of the OLED TVs I think.

What about the Dell UltraSharp UP3221Q? It is advertised as a HDR monitor and seems superior to the ASUS in this regard:
https://www.dell.com/en-us/work/shop/de ... ccessories

It has less colors though (83% rec2020 instead of 89% on ASUS) but I wonder whether I would see the difference.

In April the new LG OLEDs are coming out. Starting at €1.650,- that would be a budget-conscious alternative. I will mull on that.

Dell is based on IPS panel with zoning (although 2000 zones which is good), so will most likely have same issues as Asus and Apple XDR. Any Dell reviews yet? HDR is quite tricky in monitors- you need deep blacks, high brightness, good uniformity etc.
Stop looking at quoted Rec.2020 coverage as this is about meaningless. You want 100% P3 gamut cover. Rest of gamut support is really irrelevant unless it's 100% Rec.2020 panel ( which doesn't exist).

LG OLEDs may be some solution, but only if they have good (close to 1000nits) peak brightness. HDR monitor with peak brightness at eg. 400nits is not really a HDR monitor.

I still think OLED TV is your best option at this budget also due to size (if you really want it to be video preview monitor).

Any Dell reviews yet?

There is this https://petapixel.com/2021/01/11/dell-m ... r-at-5000/
quite enthusiastic review, but not a colorist or video editor. This is why I'm asking here on the forum. It would be good to hear some hands on experiences.

Interestingly I just saw that ASUS will be releasing the ASUS ProArt PA32UCG in March. This one is HDR 1400 certified. Like the Dell it is specifically marketed as a HDR monitor. Street price will be around €5000,-, so quite a bit above the Dell, which came out last December. This price bracket is seeing some action and I wouldn't be surprised if Eizo will also announce an HDR monitor in this price bracket soon.

Anyway, your LG suggestion is emerging as my top pick, the affordability is nice and it seems to work sufficiently for many people.

Eizo said they won't use zoning as it's not good enough to provide proper HDR image, so would not expect anything 'compromised' from Eizo. Other technologies which work for HDR are unfortunately expensive atm. It needs time and some break through in technology.

Mentioned review is not a real review which you should use as reference. It's more an article without any real, objective information.
