Resolve 16 crashes on render - at random - every time

PostSat Nov 30, 2019 11:18 am

I've been trying to render a simple ~50 minute video. Nothing fancy, no color grading, no complicated transitions, not even multiple video tracks - just a few cuts and a couple of audio tracks.

Editing and playback of the video was no problem. Rendering, however, is a disaster.

Every time I try to render, Resolve crashes randomly. It's never the same place. Sometimes it gets nearly halfway, other times it crashes at 3%. It doesn't just crash, either - the program just destroys itself and bombs to desktop. To restart it, I have to go into Task Manager and clear the process that's left behind before it'll start up again.

The source file is mp4 (1920x1080 60fps), but I took a friend's advice and recoded it to Apple ProRes 422 format, hoping that would somehow clear up any issues Resolve might stumble on in the original mp4. No such luck. It would not appear that the source file is the problem. (And why would Resolve crash at random times if it was?)

I would love to attach my entire error log but there's a 1 meg limit on uploads here. So I've attached what I assume is the most relevant log, the ResolveDebug.txt file.

I'm running an Intel i5-3570 w/3.40 GHz and 8 gb RAM. OS is Windows 10 64-bit. GPU is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 with all the latest drivers updated.

This is very frustrating. I hope somebody can help.

Are you rendering to ProRes?

If to H.264, you are likely low on system memory but more detail are needed about what your attempting.

What is the specific GPU driver and can you try rendering at just 10fps.. setting in advanced delivery settings

Is that even possible?

Same problem here. My workaround:
Deliver Page - Render Settings - "File" Tab - Render Speed - Set this to 100 or less

There was another thread where the OP thought he solved his rendering problem by continuing to use the computer in other applications during the render. Which suggested to me that his computer was going to sleep during the render.

Check your Windows power settings to see if Windows might be shutting something down during the render.

If that doesn't work, try limiting the render speed to 100 fps (or less) as suggested in the previous comment.

I was not rendering to ProRes.

I'll try the render speed thing.

I have the same problem - program closes unexpectedly during render. Have to use Task Manager to force quit Resolve before it starts back up. Happens at random points during render, including within 10 seconds of beginning it. I've monkeyed with settings to no avail. Trying to assemble various screen capture MP4s to a single MP4 file with some titles overlaid for YouTube use.

System is Alienware 15 R3
I7-7700 HQ CPU @ 2.80
16 RAM

Using Nvidia card GeForce driver 445.75 (3/23/2020)

Any suggestions or workarounds welcome.

Try to render a DNxHD or Cineform master and then convert that to H.264 with any of the tools based on ffmpeg.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

What specific Nvidia card and is that the Studio or Game Ready driver? Some driver versions have been problematic for some people.

Same problem, different system.

I'm trying to render a 1h30 home video and managed to finish the rendering 2 times (out of dozens). I tried some tips, like rendering with the Resolve screen minimized, rendering right after rebooting, etc. But it still fails most of the times, it seems a matter of luck.

Of course, I manually updated my video drivers to the latest version, my windows is up to date and I am using the latest version of Resolve.

I really liked the software and had chosen it to start learn editing (I am a beginner), but if it weren't for all the time I spent editing this file, I would have already switched to other software, that showed no problems in rendering the same file (not edited).

Seeing all these people in this forum, with the same problem, worries me a lot. It seems to be a Resolve bug or some serious incompatibility with my system.

Anyway, I think the solution will be, unfortunately, to migrate to other software.

If this could help, my System specs are:

CPU : Ryzen 2700X
Mobo: AsRock B450M Pro4
RAM : 2x Adata XPG Z1 8GB DDR4 2666MHz
GPU : MSI Radeon RX580
SSD: Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB
HDD: Seagate ST2000DM008-2FR102

Are you trying to render straight into H.264 or 265?
If so, try to render a mezzanine codec like Cineform or DNxHR first and do the final encoding with Handbrake (or the like).
No crashes here with the same GPU, even a recent 4-hour timeline, but then it's a Mac.

I was experiencing this too with Sony a7iii H.264 footage + Fusion titles exporting to H.265 via NVENC encoding. Turns out the trick for me was disabling "bypass re-encode when possible". Now it doesn't crash!

Another thing to try is lowering the render speed.

I had the same problem with 16.2 (everything ok with 15) I had to arrive to "10" trying to render a 30 minutes Braw editing. Even at "25" the computer crashed.
With Pro Res files on timeline render worked out fine, even more complex works.
(Rx580 card, with 15 some Intel, sorry I should expand my memory)

Btw I experienced problems with 16.2.1, had to go back to 16.2

This apparently solved my problems, but I realized my problem was not a crash, but a "timeout when waiting for frame", it seems to be a Resolve issue with Ryzen CPUs...

Any news for the Ryzen CPU issue? It crash randomly

My last hope, doesn't do it either. I just can't "deliver" much more than 1 minute of material without crash.

We need Resolve logs, system info and a project export .drp to even begin to have a hope of suggesting anything useful.

Same problem here --trying to render larger file than usual, and it kept crashing less than half way through rendering every time. I upgraded to the latest version, tried several different file types and settings, and nothing helped. Then I read on this forum to lower the rendering speed. I did that, lowering it to 100, and the render worked perfectly, so that solved my dilemma -thank you!!

A suggestion to Blackmagic: Since this seems to be a recurring issue, make the setting of rendering speed a requirement before allowing rendering (a checkbox could be provided to override that requirement in the future) with a warning that using maximum speed could cause the render to crash, and if it does, to try lower rendering speeds.

Hi there,

I can confirm this behaviour
Ryzen 7 3700x
32Gb memory
NVIDIA 1660 Ti driver 27.21.14.5638

lowering the speed as suggested seems to help, but is a real pity of the hardware...

What I spotted as that the reportd diskspace after rendering is not even close to reality: before rendering 26% (correct) after rendering 89% but in reality 27%!!

Hope this helps to "resolve" the problem
