Pocket 4K Takes Long To Recognize SD Card (after update 6.6)

PostFri Nov 29, 2019 7:24 am

Hi,
I'm new here!
I'm writing for a specific problem that I've noticed in my Pocket 4K since I've updated it to the v6.6.
When I turn it on, it takes more than one minute (yeah, I timed it) for the camera to recognize and read my SD card.
Before the update, it was almost instantaneous. I could just power off and on and press rec straight away.
My SDs are SanDisk Extreme 95mb/sec (but they weren't giving me this problem before)
Anyone with the same problem?

Thanks, guys!

How many video files do you have on your card? I have similar problem on any firmware. When you reach a curtain amount of clips it starting to boot much longer (a few minutes for 1000 files).

Ho joshuab, have tried to downgrade firmware to see if phenomenon disappear? Is simple, remove actual camera firmware from your computer, install a previous version like 6.4-6.3 and connect camera. Software tell you that firmware are not up to date and ask if you want to update, when you accept it downgrade firmware of camera.

I feel like this is what's happening. The fuller the card get, the more it takes to recognise it. I think this wasn't happening on my previous firmware 6.2.

I need to downgrade and see if the problem disappear.

Is there something on the way or do we have to "live" with that problem?

There are also reports that this happens to some SSDs.

I’m very grateful something is on the way. This has been a problem for me with all firmware versions I’ve had.
If the battery life wasn’t so short, it would be much less of an issue to leave the camera on. A fix will be fantastic.

Pocket 4K Takes Long To Recognize SD Card (after update 6.6)

PostTue Jan 28, 2020 1:46 pm

Fingers crossed an update includes the option of selecting 1.33x or 2x anamorphic desqueeze on the monitor when shooting 2.8K on the BMPCC4K. Not a high priority but nice to have. In the 4:3 aspect ratio of 2.8K, a 1.33x anamorphic results in about a 16:9 aspect ratio.

In post you take off 4 lines of resolution after 1.33x desqueeze and you have 16:9, 2880x1620. 2160 / 1.33 = 1624.

The 2880x2160 becomes an economical way to get to DCI 2K 2048x858 deliverables compared to shooting 4K, but 4K ‘wastes’ less of the image as you downscale 2x in post. You can also get DCI 2K from UHD and a 1.33x desqueeze which is what I did for the movie pilot on the URSA Mini 4.6K.

The same thing has been happening with me using a T5 SSD since my 6.6 update. The more shots I would accumulate, the longer it would take from turning on the camera until recognizing the drive. Up to over two minutes wait with a 500GB T5.

Hi Rick,

Does this mean it is better to shoot 4k dci for 2X squeeze then fix in post rather than using the 2.8k "built in mode"?
I'm about to have a go with the 1.33 squeeze, not quite sure what format to shoot with this as yet..

The 2.8K 4:3 aspect ratio was developed due to the large number of people that have clamored for a 4:3 aspect ratio on a Blackmagic camera just like they have on their Panasonic GH5.

BMD implemented a 6:5 ratio 3072x2560 on the URSA mIni 4.6K cameras for 2x anamorphic lenses that in my opinion is smarter if your goal is shooting a widescreen or ‘scope 2.39:1 aspect ratio. It’s better in the sense that you waste very little of the pixels to get there as you desqueeze to 2.4:1.

With a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 2x anamorphic lens, you end up desqueezed as 2.66:1 aspect ratio. Now you can do that, but normally you’re going to crop in post to 2.39:1 and you throw away a lot of pixels (or use them to reframe or stabilize). You still deliver DCI 4K widescreen 4096x1716 or DCI 2K widescreen 2048x858.

If you are interested in 1.33x anamorphics as I shoot, then your sensor area used will best be 16:9 typically UHD 3840x2160. After 1.33x desqueeze you can either create a larger number of horizontal pixels such as 5104x2160 or you squeeze the vertical pixels by 1.33x to get 3840x1624. From the latter you can downscale and crop to generate either DCI 2K 2048x858 or HD widescreen (not a DCI cinema format) 1920x804.

If you want to expand to DCI 4K widescreen 4096x1716, it’s going to throw away a lot of pixels. I prefer to alter the vertical pixels to make them square. You could try 2x anamorphic squeeze beginning with a DCI 4K 4096x2160 but squeezing the vertical 2x gets you to 1080 and that’s a long way from 4096x1716. You’re better beginning with the larger pixel count sensors like the BMPCC6K or URSA Mini 4.6K which is ideal for DCI 4K widescreen.

On the BMPCC6K, you are also able to shoot 2x anamorphic with the 3.7K 3728x3104 window. You can get to DCI 4K or DCI 2K from that starting point. More on that later if any wants to do that.

In addition to desqueeze ratio options of 1.33x and 2x, another option for a desqueeze ratio of 1x (no squeeze, desqueeze). That would make the camera more usable when shooting for square or near-square deliveries, such as social media ads.

Yes, an option for no squeeze is important too. When you use a window with a 4:3 aspect ratio, that would be fine to shoot with no squeeze with spherical lenses if you wanted to emulate 16mm film.

I'd welcome any additional features but it sounds like to me, based on Kristian's notes, that BM will release an emergency bug fix before they do anything else.
