help me to decide

PostSat Jun 08, 2013 6:33 pm

Fellows. I'm a happy man with my BMCC EF so far and comes the time to expand my lens stock.
I already have a 11-16mm to the wides and a 50-150mm to the teles and need to get something good and reliable to the mids and to the all the time.
In my choices, or humble opinion, the opcions are a sigma/canon 17-50mm f2.8 or a tamron 24-70mm f2.8.
What I'm looking for is image quality with sharp edges a truly workhorse over all knowing about our special camera and sensor specs.
If you can contribute with your experience in the task or you know about another lens to look I will very gratefull.
Thank you all.
Sorry if my english is not good enough.

My money would be on the Canon 17-50 f/2.8 IS.

Or is you have the money a few nice Zeiss primes. :-)

ZF.2 or ZE 35/1.4 and 25/2.

Thank you Adam for your advice. And answering that I have plans to in a future get an entire set of primes when a job let me buy it of course. In the meantime a zoom set in my objetive.
The canon is checked another bell is ringing?

Sigma 17-50, if you get the ex dc hs blabahblah it's for an apc sensor so you will use more of the lens. This is my main workhorse lens and I've used it on everything.

My Tamron 17-50 has been a wonderful lens for me. Big bang for the buck.

I've got the Sigma 17-50 2.8 and use it with my 7D. It rarely comes off the camera, its so fast and versatile I can use it for everything.

thank you all guys your experiences are very appreciated. A last question is on the table to solve this, in a similar price range are the canon 24-105mm f4L, is one step dark and no so wide but is an L series lens. what you think about?

Don't get the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

I own this lens and it has great image quality and focal range.
But it has a huge down side. The focus ring is not useable for
film work. Focus pulling is impossible... This lens was made for
photography.

I would recommend getting the Canon 17-50, good lens with great
image quality (L Series glass). Also Image stabilization and the perfect
focal length. 24-70 or 24-104 is good, but your missing out on the wide
end on the BMC. the 17-50 follows your 11-16.

You can also think about the Canon 16-35 F2.8 L.
Assuming you allready have a tele lens. My kit consists of the following.

Sigma 8-16 mm
Canon 16-35 f2.8 L
Sigma 30mm f1.4
Canon 100mm Macro f2.8 L

I also have the Tamron 17-50 which is great, but as I said the focus ring
is a no go for me. (I do use it for photography tho)

Greets,

is interesting your point Wander. I didn't know that the 17-50mm of canon has a L series lens, just for don't have a red ring in it. if this is certain we have a clear winner, if not maybe the sigma with same specs than the canon and almost a half of price let me buy a variable nd filter too with the savings.
Please confirm me that true or not about the canon one glass.
thank you all again.

The Canon isn't L. The Tamron does have a short focus throw but the Sigma has the same limitation. The Canon wins the focus throw contest. The Sigma is said to have a very stiff zoom ring also. I don't do much follow focusing or live zooming so it's a non-issue for me. All three are very sharp lenses. If you have the money, go with the Canon.

Good point! I wonder if he meant the 17-40? It is L but is only f/4 and lacks IS.

Yes I think the same, the only L series on that range is the 17-40mm but is not IS and just f4.
Obviously my choices are in my case go for the canon or the sigma lenses because when I checked the tamron is not IS too.
Later I told you wich comes to home after all.
Thank you.
Greets.

Ps. Bmcc.tv great site is yours and very nice breakfast video. Going to use your site as reference from now on.

The new Tamron is IS. I have the old non-IS version. It's sharper. :D

Canon does have a 17-55mm IS lens which is quite expensive, but it is supposed to be pretty good.

And it is quite known among Tamron users that the 17-50mm without IS is better. But of course depends if IS is critical for your jobs.

well actually in all my jobs, more on fiction than commercials, I try to do most of my shots in handheld because I like to be very inside the scene so an IS option of glass is more than wellcome.

Hi.

I will go for 2 primes instead of zooms.

I'm looking for 18mm and 50mm Zeiss primes. I won't need any other soon based on my current needs.
Would love to have some 135 Zeiss prime but my budget is quite tight.
Maybe Canon 135mm will do the work.

Greetings
Tom

That's my footage — thanks Cris!

I've got a few other samples shot on the Sigma 17-50 too:

I like it, and I tested it directly against the Canon 17-55 in the shop before buying. Both sharp edge to edge. Canon has longer focus throw but no hard stops, Sigma has a shorter throw but hard stops. Both are constant f/2.8 and IS, but Sigma is much cheaper. I also have a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 which is great for darker spaces, but I love the flexibility of a zoom.

Thanks for that info; much appreciated.

Question: Approximately how much focus ring travel is there on your Sigma 17-50mm? In other words, from hard stop to hard stop, about how many degrees (or in./mm) does the focus ring on the lens barrel travel?

Cheers.
