Teranex USB-C connection for calibration probes?

PostSun Jan 05, 2020 1:44 pm

Hi,

With the upcoming Teranex Mini SDI to DisplayPort 8K HDR it got me thinking, do any of the calibration probes use USB-C? As far as I know it would be USB Type A (standard connector). Will it work with any USB-C to Type A adapter?

What is the coorelation between the calibration probe and the teranex?
Typically the probe would plug into the machine that runs the supporting software, not the output device.

Ok, i see this device is supposed to coordinate with a probe, although there are a few "this doesn't work"
listings on line.

I would just run it through software specifically designed to use that probe.

The Teranex only has a USB-C port, in the description of the product it is said that you can use it to calibrate your monitor that is attached to the Teranex. Now, all calibration probes do not have USB-C to my knowledge, only USB type-A. I am therefore asking if any USB-C to USB type-A adapter will suffice for the calibration probe to still work with the Teranex.

“It's even possible to calibrate the connected display by connecting a third party USB color probe and Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 8K HDR will analyze the monitor and generate a 3D LUT to correct for color differences between displays. Two independent 3D LUTs can be loaded and you can select between them from the front panel. “

Sure, but that defeats the purpose of having calibration in a device like the Teranex which can be advantageous in situations like - client monitors etc.

I’ve been considering the Teranex myself (HDMI version). I’ll have a 16” MacBook Pro connected to an Asus PA32UCX by way of the UltraStudio 4K Mini and it is the only option I’m aware of. Even the Klein is USB-A, I’m sure any decent adapter should work. But it is also true that several forum members report that calibration isn’t working and so far no response from Blackmagic team. So I’m holding off for now, as the Teranex sells for USD $1,600 here in Vietnam. An employee over at Pixel Factory in Ho Chi Minh says he’ll bring it over to my place to test it out when they get a demo unit in, but that could be a long while!

Hi Jon,

if you are looking for a calibration-solution for the ASUS just have a look at LightSpace.
https://www.lightillusion.com

They are in direct contact with ASUS about the PA-32UCX and have confirmed a working calibration from within resolve with the upcoming firmware from ASUS.

Good thing: you can use your i1-Probe delivered with the ASUS (if you have the UCX-K) with a little tweak with this system.

Cheers, Daniel

It sounds to me like a "but wait...there's more" type of sales pitch. I would buy it for its main purpose, but don't be amazed when it's sub functions are not quite the same as a dedicated device...which seems to be coming to light based on comments in the forum.

Good calibration software is worth it's weight in gold. What kind of software is this unit using to calibrate your monitor? Can you tell it what kind of monitor you have? What kind of data interaction do you have with it?
Most good software needs a bit of personal setup before you can say "Go"

I'm not sure i would trust it over lightspace or calman and your existing probe.

Hello Michael. To answer the original question you can use a USB type A Female connector to USBC adapter. There are cables and adapters available

Thanks Daniel. It looks like their software is only compatible with Windows OS, so I can’t use it.
