Constant 25% CPU usage with empty project on macOS 10.13.6

PostMon Oct 15, 2018 9:38 am

Why does Resolve Studio always use around 25% - 30% CPU when I just started with an empty project?
What does it do in the background?

On Linux I see hardly a 3 - 4% CPU usage...

Nobody else seeing this on macOS?

This is also true for the last version 15.1.2.008....

~4% always. But am on Sierra so not completely comparable.

Few possibilities i can think of.
- Resolve has some issues scanning resources on an assigned network share
- You have 10000000000 audio plugins where it is scanning/checking all of them and there are some issues
- You have a huge sound fx library which it is scanning and there are some access issue
- It is trying to generate thumbnails for all your projects and has some access issues .
- It has some issue with your cache / gallery location.

Check Resolve log files. You can generate them via the menu and then open the file yourself and look at the end of the most current logs files in there. MAybe you see something that it is trying to do and looping on it.

Nothing the like..

No additional plugins or fx library..and nothing on a share...only local drives..

Only errors I see in the logs is:

Too bad.. Do you also have that your Mac really slows down when you actually use Resolve? Up to 150% CPU.

It's really undoable for me to use it.

Btw: I have contacted the Blackmagic Support

Hi there,
I am having the same issue. Resolve uses 30% CPU doing nothing.

Hi,

Same thing started this morning, after several weeks with the same project with no such issues. No upgrades that I can think of (except Resolve). I have 25% CPU use when idle, and Resolve has started massively dropping frames on playback of very low-res archival material (640, 1280 pixels-wide). I don't understand what could have happened, as nothing in the project or in my hardware has changed.

The RAID seems to be audible working on something constantly, but I don't know what it could be. I don't even know if it's caught in a loop or something (I've restarted twice). Is there a way to see what precise process Resolve is running?

EDIT: To be clear, I don't know if Resolve didn't *always* use 25% CPU when idle. I only looked at its CPU usage today when it started dropping frames.

Might be worth checking your RAID build status... if a drive has failed then it may well be working overtime trying to serve up frames to Resolve.
Let's have a return to the glory days, when press releases for new versions included text like "...with over 300 new features and improvements that professional editors and colorists have asked for."

Resolve 16.1.2 uses 25% CPU (on a i7-7700) even when just launched and the project window is opened:

Is that 25% out of the total 3% user load? If so, that's not much. But maybe I'm not interpreting it correctly. I'm not used to the type of stats you get on a Mac with a multi core CPU. I imagine it also depends on which App Usage Format you have selected in iStat.

Even so, the CPU is at 92% idle and currently running way below its base frequency because of it.

On my quad-core 25% in Activity Monitor usually means 25% out of a total of 400%. Granted, it's lower than what Cubase does when idle...

SoftRAID reports no errors (and would have notified me anyway). The drive has been calmer this afternoon, but I'm still getting dropped frames with very basic footage. If it persists I'll continue in a new thread, as this is off-topic I believe.

Same here. MacBook Pro 16", i7, Catalina, CPU usage of Resolve when idle between 20 and 30%. FCPX in comparison 0 - 5%.

This is an issue when on the road and running on the internal battery. There should be no reason to drain the battery while no intensive activity is going on.

btw. a few more observations:

while QuickTime player was running a video Resolve's cpu load fell by 10% :D

Also after a few hours of work including adding audio plugins and color grading CPU load in idle state went up by 10% averaging between 30-40% (even after restarting the program).

And when the Fairlight page is open Resolve needs roughly another 10% in idle state, bringing it up to 50% in total. :o

Same issue on my AMD 4 core APU A10. Resolve 17beta do nothing and uses 25% of my CPU. Working event on small resolution files is impossible.
