Resolve crashing at the brink of the Project Manager window suggests the GPU fails to initialize.

It's usually driver-related. Can you provide a log for Resolve's startup sequence (up to the crash)?

Does the R3DAPI guilty for this crash?

Hm. Don't see anything GPU related there. What I do notice looks like a loop between the HDMI audio and USB audio. Resolve checks one, sets up PulseAudio, goes to the other, does PulseAudio again, then back to the first.

Have you got an external soundcard?

Nope, just an internal integrtated to the motherboard. I can't disable it from BIOS. So I did by using the blacklist file I talked about... but it didn't help. By the way, I can't map the audio device to Decklink 4K Extreme 12G unlike in Windows.

What about R3DAPI?

The audio issue may be linked to this: https://www.phoronix.com/forums/forum/h ... -usb-audio

That's why I disabled it so it doesn't show up in Audio parameters. But DaVinci keeps scanning it.

You could try disabling both audio devices with PulseAudio Volume Control and see if it makes any difference.

As you can see here, the R3DAPI failure does not break the startup. It's an SDK for Red footage, so it's not essential.

I've blacklisted again all audio peripherals in a blacklist file. I couldn't load the PulseAudio control panel. It's stuck on "Established connection... please wait". So I've done this: "sudo alsa force-unload"

I removed the PuilseAudio package by apt-get remove --purge pulseaudio

No change!

EDIT: Whether the USB audio device from the motherboard is loaded or not, Resolve seems to scan / load audio in a loop process. For now, I leave that device disconnected.

Hi all,

Sorry to ask again but it might help me for a diagnostic. As you can see in my logs, there's a kind of audio device scanning in loop. For those who have a working startup, can you please tell me if you get the same "scan loop"? By running DaVinci with ./resolve in the bin directoy.

Blackmagic Design is quite explicit about the fact they design and test Resolve with:

Intel CPU
NVIDIA GPU
CentOS 6 or CentOS 7

If you want to use any other hardware or OS, it's not supported by Blackmagic Design. Why you would go through the trouble of investing €12,000 without understanding what the developers themselves are designing and testing is beyond comprehension.

FWIW, reading and writing NTFS on CentOS 7 is quite simple with NTFS-3G, and takes all of 5 seconds. All you need to do is install EPEL and then run:

$ sudo yum install ntfs-3g

I did that but it doesn't mount back after reboot. It appears we must edit a .conf file. The OS crashed at startup after that.

tl;dr; Just successfully installed Davinci Resolve 1.6 on Ubuntu 18.04. Without any library linking or something like this... and not sure what I'll do with it now.

Long story:
My Lightworks year subscription ended. It was good, but I missed some features there. I decided to look around what's new on Linux for non-linear video editing that could fit my small tasks: screencast maker for youtube + family/hobby video editing. Found DaVinci Resolve. Youtube lessons were very very promising. I found that there is audio noice removal (I so missed this in Lightworks!), very good integrated Fusion things, good crhoma key, color editing(!), tracking, and ADR for final audio layer for screencasts. It was right what I needed and missing there.

Then I tried. Then I found two critical for me issues: 1) ADR doesn't record audio from my mic (ALSA devices, when I use pulseaudio. 5 min try of change volumes in alsamixes haven't helped. 2) And I can't load mp4 + h.264 codes, I can't do quick export for youtube. I decided, that it's bugs or may be payed version limitation, I was almost ready ...

And then I understood that h.264 limitation is only limitation for Free Linux version. Free Windows + Mac versions supports this codec.

And I am so pissed off! ... what reason for that? That discriminating thing... you found best way how to piss off linux users with linux support. Well done!

Hoping to encourage more folks to use Resolve on Linux I was able to get it running using RHEL 8.1.

Ryzen 7 CPU
ROG Crosshair Hero III MB
MSI GeForce 1080 grachics card
Dual screens

Installed RHEL 8.1 using default values. Downloaded and installed DaVinci Resolve Version 16.1.2026 - 1GPU

When I tried to run it I got a large black square and QT errors. Basically the Nouveau kernel and Wayland don't play well with NVIDIA and Resolve won't boot. Many thanks to Seth Goldin for the steps here https://github.com/sethgoldin/install-d ... lve-centos, which were a good start:

Here is what I did:

Dependencies:
Missing libGLU.so.1, so install mesa-libGLU
Missing libOpenCL.so.1 so install ocl-icd
Missing Kernel headers so install dkms and kernel-devel

With basic install got an error and black box occupies middle of primary screen:

Basically Wayland and the Nouveau driver don't play well with NVIDIA. Here is how I changed away

Blacklist the driver:
vim /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf
blacklist nouveau
options nouveau modeset=0

Then edit grub to blacklist the driver. The rhgb entry also loads the graphics driver, so it causes issues. Remove it and quiet. The line looks like this now:

vim /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="crashkernel=auto resume=/dev/mapper/rhel_tower-swap rd.lvm.lv=rhel_tower/root rd.lvm.lv=rhel_tower/swap rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau nouveau.modeset=0"

Keep a copy of initramfs just in case something goes bad, then create a new grub and initramfs:
grub2-mkconfig
mv /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r)-nouveau.img
dracut /boot/initramfs-$(uname -r).img $(uname -r)

After reboot log in then go to run level 3 as NVIDA won't install while x is running:

sudo init 3

Then run the installer. I chose to install everything and overwrite libraries. So far it looks to be working.
~/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-440.59.run

After the installation I rebooted, chose session 1 and logged in as a non-root user. If you run resolve without sudo the spash screen pops up then dies. So
sudo /opt/resolve/bin/resolve

I got a warning that the program has frozen. Chose to wait and after about 30 seconds it comes the rest of the way up. It's running now, so on to find new bugs!

I'm getting hard crashes whenever I try to use the pen tool in the color tab. It's repeatable. Click color tab with a selected clip. Click the "Window" icon. Then Click the "Curve" pen tool. Click some area of the video canvas and BOOM! Crash. Every time.

This is running the latest Resolve Studio 16. On Ubunto 19.10. With a Vega FE card and ROCM. (yes, I know it's unsupported)

Can anyone with Resolve on official CentOS (with AMD graphics) confirm this does (or does not) happen there too?

Oh my gosh, just buy a cheap license and be done with it. Yes, life is unfair and whatnot but whinng doesn't make it better - using a Linux distribution doesn't mean you will get everything for free ( I assume the h.264 license is included in Windows OS but not in a Linux distribution, so you either pay for it or you don't).

Thanks, Tim! Just out of curiosity, did you try installing Desktop Video 11.5? Just curious to know if it works on RHEL 8.1 yet. Haven't gotten a chance to test on 8.1 myself yet.

I just want to point out, as a Studio owner who's paid for the license, that while you can import h.264 on the Linux version, you can't import h.264 with audio codec like aac or mp3; pcm-16 .wav all the way. Which means, most every camera out there outputs a format with an audio codec you can't directly import in even the Studio version of Resolve on Linux. I mean, unless you're using a Shogun to record DNxHR_HQX directly. In which case, you're golden. Or unless you're using a BM camera. In which case, you're golden too. But every other camera out there outputs h.264/h.265 with aac.

It's interesting assumption, but I have support for h.264 everywhere in Linux, literally any 5-sloc-script could decode and encode h.264. Thanks to things like ffmpeg and gstreamer. It even supports hardware decoding using nvidia gpu and other hardware decoders.

But whatever with that h.264 and other codecs support (It's discriminating and completely shame as for me, but let it be). What to do with ADR in Linux (viewtopic.php?f=21&t=85490) Any chances it will work in payed version?

So it's back to 16.1.2, which is fine, for now.

Could you please share your logs? I just installed 16.2 on my system in signature and it appears to work fine. Could it be driver related perhaps?

Thank you for the logs Noel. I agree. Not much to go on. There are a few complaints about unknown postgresql version and those three lines in the beginning telling us direct I/O is switched on. I've attached a log from a good run on my machine for comparison. There must be something different...

Could it be that there is some Resolve config not working correctly with the new version? Perhaps if you temporarily move the ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve directory out of the way and let Resolve initialize the config again? (logging in as a new user with a clean profile should have the same effect)

I was able to get 16.2 going by deleting ~/.local/share/DaVinciResolve.

When I try to connect to a PostGresql database - crash. So that seems to be the issue.

What version of PostGresql are you using? Ii'm on 11.5.

Okay, good that you got it working Noel!

I think we are on to something. I run a PostgreSQL 9.6 install but using 16.2 I can't access my databases any more. I get various exceptions like the one below but no fatal crash. The databases just won't open. Disk databases are working fine though.

Glad to know I'm not the only one with a postgresql problem. I copied my projects to a disk database for now and I'm up and running.

The only other issue so far is GPU scopes don't work.

I would only recommend running PostgreSQL 9.5, and the current release is 9.5.21.

On another note, the NVIDIA 440.64 seems to be completely buggy, crashing my CentOS 7.7 system every hour or so. I left a message over in the NVIDIA forums to try to get some developer attention on it: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topi ... our-or-so/

If you've installed 440.64 via ELRepo, I recommend uninstalling it, and then selectively reinstalling NVIDIA 440.59, which is still available from ELRepo.

So, first, you'd uninstall 440.64:

yum doesn't manage the older dependencies well when you're trying to install packages that aren't the latest version, so then you'd want to install 440.59, but in the particular order so that each package already has the dependencies it will need:

Code: Select all: $ sudo yum install nvidia-x11-drv-libs-440.59 $ sudo yum install nvidia-x11-drv-440.59 $ sudo yum install kmod-nvidia-440.59

Then, finally, you'll want to prevent yum from trying to update to 440.64. So vim into /etc/yum.conf and add the following line:

Code: Select all: exclude=kmod-nvidia-440.64* nvidia-x11-drv-440.64* nvidia-x11-drv-libs-440.64*

Whenever ELRepo packages whatever NVIDIA driver is released after this troublesome 440.64, yum will be able to automatically update to that, but with this configuration, you can update all other packages and yum won't bother you to go to 440.64 while you still need to stay on 440.59.

I have spent some proper time now in Resolve 16.2 and on projects in my PostgreSQL 9.6 databases. After those initial scary exception messages things appear to be stable and working fine.

Regarding your problem with the GPU scopes, I found that I had to go to the Nvidia 440 driver for reliable operation. 430 was not enough as stated in the official installation instructions. No idea why. Reports I have from other Debian users are inconclusive. 430 works for some and not for others, although 440 seems to be most reliable right now.

Seems 16.2 Studio with PostgreSQL has problems!

This is what I tested today:

Dell Xeon with pure BMD Centos 7.3 (no updates of CentOS after install)

[bz@dellbz ~]$ cat /etc/redhat-release
CentOS Linux release 7.3.1611 (Core)

NVidia 1080ti
NVidia driver 418.56

DaVinci Resolve Studio 16.1.2
Works fine both with local and PGSQL projects (DB server is a separate small Linux machine)

Run the DR Studio 16.2 installer, choose uninstall
Run DR Studio 16.2 installer again, all looks OK
Without rebooting start DR
Big error message suggesting report to BMD (DaVinci Resolve quit unexpectedly)
Close that window

Disconnect the PGSQL server from network

Without reboot start DR
Looks fine all the way, but it warns about no connection to DB server
Local projects works fine!

This happened before on a Ubuntu Studio Threadripper Radeon VII and an Imac 5k/Mojave 10.14.6
Both after uninstall and install to DR Studio 16.1.2 worked fine again, also with projects on DB server

Now with DB server off network, I uninstalled 16.1.2 on the iMac and installed DR Studio 16.2 again, all looks fine and local projects runs OK, warns about no connection to DB server

Connect PGSQL server to network again and try changing project in DR on the iMac
It still claims DB server is unavailable, even after opening and close dialog several times

Quit DR and starts it up again, now it seems to detects the DB server - same error at startup again

This is repeatable on CentOs BMD 7.3, Ubuntu Studio and MacOs 10.14.6

GPU scopes in 16.2 Studio work on a Lenovo laptop with 435 drivers, but not on two desktops with 430, 435 or 440 drivers.

The main difference seems to be the laptop has two GPU's (2x GeForce 650M 2G), and the desktops have only one (GeForce 1080 8G).

Update: Scopes work with 440 drivers on the laptop.

Getting that all running was not easy, and changing PostgreSQL versions to try and find one that works with 16.2 is far from trivial and highly disruptive.

This is a core issue which, hopefully, BMD will address toute de suite.

AFAIK, Blackmagic Design has only ever recommended 9.5 since 12.5. 9.5 is still a current and supported release. 9.5.21 was released just a few weeks ago.

I understand the general inclination to go with newer versions of software, but in this case, you really should think of these software products in terms of Ubuntu’s “LTS” versions or or the RHEL/CentOS distros, as opposed to Fedora.

There are literally no advantages to having a newer version of PostgreSQL to run Resolve, but there are possible [maybe even probable?] disadvantages having to do with backwards compatibility.

Start fresh with 9.5.21. I haven’t had any issues with it.

BMD has only ever recommended CentOS and never any other version of Linux, yet most of the contributors to this thread use other Linux distros and versions quite successfully.

Daniel Tufvesson started this now 34 page thread with 1,692 replies, and, along with many other contributors, has done a superb job of helping to make that possible.

Resolve is only one of the collection of programs many of us use and I for one find CentOS quite deficient.

Noel, this isn’t just about the particular binaries and paths that can be ported from CentOS to Ubuntu, etc., for those who want to make those other distros work. This is about deeper programming conventions down in the PostgreSQL database. There’s literally no upside to using newer major versions of PostgreSQL, and as you’re finding out, quite a large downside.

A 10G PostgreSQL network of Linux, Mac, and Windows computers worked without issue during all of 16.x.x until 16.2.

It wasn't broken. It didn't need fixing.

It’s not necessarily that they broke something with 16.2 and newer versions of PostgreSQL—it’s that they were only ever developing on 9.5, so anything that worked on newer major versions was contingent. At a certain point you just have to understand the development environment and not fight it.

I myself was also never satisfied with the BMD build of CentOS 7.3, but I knew that to use other versions I’d need to get a comprehensive understanding of how all the different components worked on whatever alternative distro I wanted to use.

With PostgreSQL it’s just a different story. There’s literally no upside to using a major version higher than 9.5 for Resolve, and the PostgreSQL developers themselves warn against compatibility problems across different major versions. https://www.postgresql.org/support/versioning/

Their recommendation is to use the highest minor version for whatever currently supported major version you need. Their words: “Major versions usually change the internal format of system tables and data files. These changes are often complex, so we do not maintain backward compatibility of all stored data.”
