BMPCC 6k Monitor question

PostThu Mar 26, 2020 8:04 pm

Hello folks,

I see a lot of bmpcc 6k rigs where it's not possible to touch the screen of the bmpcc 4k/6k. I wonder how people handle this and if a good monitor solves this problem.

Are there external monitors with the possibility to control every setting of the bmpcc 6k without touching the camera screen? What would you recommend as a monitor for the bmpcc 6k?

Is it a better rigging solution to have some space to be able to touch the cameras screen?

Best regards and stay healthy,
Damian

I think the only monitor(s) that will allow you to access the same controls as the screen on the back of the camera would be the Blackmagic Video Assist line.

It would be nice to get a version that is simply a monitor. The external recording capabilities probably shoot the price up quite a bit.

Personally, I never liked how others rig the BMPCC 4/6K with batteries or other accessories behind the monitor. There are better ways to make a functional rig.

Second Que’s remark. Take a look at the BMVA12G7 or similar external monitors. It may not be what you settle on but it’ll get you thinking about that excellent option.

While the BMVA12G7 has a similar heads up display for the monitor and its recorder, which is a nice concept to give it a consistent interface you use with the Pocket 4/6K Camera, it only controls the functions on the monitor/recorder. No where could I find in the specifications, that it can control any of the Pocket 4/6K Camera functions.

Having the monitor control the camera settings has been an often requested feature, but as of now, still not implemented as far as I can tell. If the BMVA12G7 could control the camera settings, I would have ordered one months ago.
Cheers

What Denny said. I thought controlling the camera wasn't possible. It's one of the things that has kept me on the fence about purchasing one. Well, along with indecision about a new camera. I'm waiting until May for that. Currently, I want the 5" VA, but if I get something that uses SDI, I may scale up to the 7".

True, the BMVA12G7 won’t change settings in the BMPCC4K for example that creates the video stream. But you have settings in the BMVA12G7 that can affect how you record in the BMVA12G7.

The Portkeys BM5 could be an option. You need the Bluetooth module to be able to control the camera. It's also a very bright monitor at 2200 nits.

I like that solution! It is simple and you have what you need. I think sometimes a monitor and a wheel for focus pulling are necessary.
