UltraStudio Mini Recorder & MacOs Catalina

PostFri Mar 20, 2020 2:32 pm

Has anyone been able to successfully get their mini recorder to work in the latest version of MacOS?

I haven't used my mini recorder in a couple of years and a need from my church came up again so I thought to fire it up again. To my surprise the software did not recognize my recorder. So I immediately go into troubleshooting mode. I uniinstall and re-install the software. I enable access in the privacy settings but it still didn't work. I reached out to this BM team and they gave me basic troubleshooting info that I had already tried but it still did not work.

I have an older Macbook Pro mid 2012 on MacOS Catalina.

I tried my wife's mackbook air which is on MacOS Sierra and it worked fine, on the first try but of course I don't need it on my wife's computer, I need it on mine.

Has anyone else had these issues wit MacOS Catalina? Please HELP!!!!

I’m running both a mini recorder and h264 recorder on my 2015 MBP on Catalina.

A complete uninstall of all legacy software, reboot, deletion of all prefs files of Desktop video and Media Express and then another reboot.
Reinstall the latest Desktop Video 11.5. Reboot.
Take notice of any security and integrity confirmations.

After that is was working very smooth and consistent.

Hey thanks for your reply, is there another way to ensure you fully complete the uninstallation and all its files. Could you maybe walk me through exactly how you did that?

I ran the "Uninstall Desktop Video".
I also verified the paths it was supposed to clean up and it looked all good.

If you right click on the app you can open the bundle content and you will find the shell scripts that do the cleaning up. In case you are not comfy with those, avoid them.
Simple run the uninstall app.
And reboot.

This has to do with 32bit and 64bit versions of the software (drivers) ?
Intensity Shuttle, ATEM Mini, Video Assist 5"(mini USB), Hyperdeck ShuttleHD,Analog to SDI mini-converter, software: Davinci Resolve 15 on Sierra, Resolve 18 on Catalina. (Using Apple OS 32 & 64 bit on different MacBook Pro's

I have another MacBook Pro with Catalina latest update, i just did an install of latest Video Desktop setup, it installed also Media Express, requestors popped up to alow, i confirmed, the software did a restart of the OS, installation completed, i connected my UltraStudio Mini Recorder, i connected my Lumix G7, powered up the G7, selected the red tab for for capture window, and i had live image from my camera, it works fine here, no 64bit issues..
could it be, you have interrupted a firmware update of the UltraMiniStudio Recorder ?
Otherwise, the UltraMiniStudio Recorder is Thunderbolt 2, and you're putting it in a wrong port ?
which cable or port are you using

Hi all.

New to the world of Blackmagic, but so far, fairly frustrating. Hopefully one of you helpful guys can show the way?

Bought a secondhand UltraStudioMini just as a simple solution for my Mac Pro 2015 with Catalina, but I've come to roadblocks trying to install the desktop video 11.5 driver.

I can't get past the security & privacy approval. It prompts me to 'click on allow' but it's nowhere to be found within the tabs, at all. So cannot approve.
I've tried rebooting comp, downloading driver again. Nada.

Any ideas??

I have a Mac Air 13" from mid 2015. I have tried the Mini Recorder with my Nikon D5000. When I change the source to the Blackmagic option it starts flickering green and the last frame from the builtin camera.

You need to click allow under the General tab.
But I believe you only have 30 minutes after an install to do so.

If so. Do a complete uninstall.
Reboot.
And reinstall the 11.5 version again.

Lovely to hear it all worked out Liam. :)

Catalina is an amazing OS with security in its mindset but it really pushes us users to be both active and proactive in a way we never have been before.

Happy you solved it.

Same problem on my 2013 MBP running Catalina. Media Express runs fine, but no other app recognizes the signal from the Thunderbolt Mini Recorder. Instead, apps (QT player, FCP, Zoom) are hung looking for an audio source, show no video source. Something is seriously wrong.

Sharing this illustrated instruction from Blackmagic's latest Desktop Video documentation, which worked for us. Switching to "Security & Privacy" to click "Allow" isn't the most intuitive!
