Transcoding BRAW

PostThu Apr 30, 2020 8:35 pm

Hi All!

What program do y'all use to transcode braw? I'm looking for an alternative to Resolve.

Thanks in advance!

Premiere or Adobe Media Encoder will do it, you might want to use some sort of colour correction during the transfer though.

Resolve is your best bet.
Not many other tools support BRAW, specially transcoders.

Kyno is on its way for BRAW, have a look at it. Other than Resolve, it even does transcoding in the background and will soon be able to pass some metadata over, like markers and subclips.
Far lower hardware and OS needs will even run from W7 upwards.
My disaster protection: export a .drp file to a physically separated storage regularly.

Out of this list (except Resolve, NLEs and crazy expensive products like Colorfront) probably EditReady by Divergent Media and Screen by Video Village are most interesting, but both are Mac only. When you take all things into account your choice gets limited heavily.

Yes, a lot of the options mostly just geared towards transcoding are Mac based including PrimeTranscoder, Silverstack also offers transcoding in the $90 version in addition to off-loading/checksum/etc (also Mac only).

Still, its quite a few products that can do transcoding of Blackmagic RAW footage (around 10-12 or so) considering the codec has only been out about a year and a half.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum.

We are trying to transcode braw files to smaller mp4 used as proxies.

Do you know a command line tool which can perform such transcoding?

Thanks in advance,

Pablo

You can do it with DaVinci Resolve scripting, but it's a bit fiddly.

If you're on a Mac, EditReady has a command line interface:
Code: Select all
Usage: /Applications/EditReady.app/Contents/MacOS/EditReady
    -r, --registration               Registration String

-s, --sourceFile                 Path to Source File
-d, --destFile                   Path to output folder
-p, --preset                     Path to preset file
-m, --metadataDestination        Path for Metadata XML output
    -i, --ignoreWarnings             Ignore Warnings
    -u, --showUserInterface          Show User Interface
-f, --filterFile                 Filter File from Group
    -h, --help                       Show this message

It is probably not a choice for OP but to add to the list, Nuke, Nuke Studio and Hiero support braw since version 13.1, but currently without audio decoding.
