Iphone as Monitor?

PostWed Nov 14, 2018 4:02 pm

Hi there,

is there a way or an app that would allow the iphone to be used as a camera monitor for the pocket cinema 4k?

Cheers

Iphone as Monitor?

PostWed Nov 14, 2018 6:59 pm

This iOS app Wi-Fi Camera has the function working, but it’s meant as a baby monitor or security device. There are dozens of variations of this approach, but all require an app to be written on the sending device.

Wi-Fi Camera (Web of Cam) by Alfred Systems Inc. https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/wi-fi-c ... 00278?mt=8

Perhaps in the future BMD would offer the option of Wi-Fi video out.

Isn’t a version of Blackmagic Camera Control for BMPCC4K planned ?

No, the existing one is supposed to work with the new Pocket 4K.

with external grabber only. i remember something like lukilink (under100$)
bmd had bluetooth not wifi, bluetooth is too slow to send video to monitoring seriously.

I use the filmic app for my apple watch when I put my phone in weird places for recording secondary footage (also using filmicpro.) Handy for a start-stop / little frame checker.

You're right in that it doesn't have the bandwidth to do real work but outside of the box there are a lot of good controls that could be sent to devices. Infomatics on my watch (timers/iso/shutter/lut/frame check/etc) with some expanded ideas on the phone might be a nice add.

I was talking to a software developer friend the other day wondering how robust the API was or if it was even available for the BMP4K.

There is a good app for iPhone to manage this kind of info for ursa and pocket4k. I remember that I found it yesterday.
But user ask to use iPhone like monitor, not to manage simple data infos, like Bluetooth connection was developed for iPad and now also for iPhone :-)

If the the remote app could at least show stills of what's going on it would help me a lot. A lot of times I need to record myself talking and I just need to check framing and focus. It would have saved me from buying an externa monitor.

recent Zhyiun gimbals (Crane 3, Crane 3S) have an image transmission module that can be received by iPhone and iPad. The image quality can be selected. The latency is noticeable, but fast enough to do remote focus and other real-time settings from the iDevice.

There must be some separate wifi image transmission device that does the same thing.

A YouTube search for CineEye plus BMPCC brings up several videos about using this device and an iOS or Android phone as a Blackmagic camera monitor.

This that Aki posted. You can get it at B&H. It's $149 for up to 2 mobile devices and $249 for 4 mobile devices.

Iphone as Monitor?

PostSat May 02, 2020 3:18 am

Nice! And I like Neil correcting Nino when Nino uses the term “professional” monitor to describe the capabilities of the app. “No, not professional.” How many product creators would respond like that in an interview?

Now you know they didn’t have an American reseller last year, I think a few people would have liked to see that product from NAB 2019; I missed it.

$149 for two devices would satisfy a lot of use cases for a small crew and a director/producer.

I've been tempted to get it a few times but just holding off for now - it's just on my wish list. It's so darn cheap compare to Hollylands which by the way will require a monitor... although we know that Hollyland is the better HDMI transmitter. I wonder how reliable the cineye wireless connection is.

Iphone as Monitor?

PostSat May 02, 2020 4:51 pm

Neil mention 100m with no obstruction or interference from other WiFi sources. But he did not provide any additional comments.

Interference is a biggie in some situations. For example the theatre I shoot in has converted to wireless last year so there are usually about 16 wireless audio streams going simultaneously. On a multi-camera shoot that CineEye is appealing, but I might find cut difficult to get a good reliable signal.

I have the Sennheiser AVX wireless system that I used there on the principal actor when house audio was wired, but I haven’t even tried it with all the wireless interference I expect. At least AVX will lock onto the channel with the least interference. So maybe I should try it on the actor in the dress rehearsal.

Rick - intertesting. When I used to do audio for a show at a Casino with wireless E6s we had no end of issues with wireless signals. Likely few places have more wireless signals than a Casino. However, in a recent theatre I at least had no interference from the lighting wireless signal.

I have read a few reviews, short term the connection is good (up to 2 hrs), but the IOS app or the signal can drop and requires some fiddling to get it back up, on longer shoots. While using a iPhone or iPad as the monitor seems good, the image quality is not as good a monitor, as the Hollyland Mars is with a real camera monitor connected. Also the CineEye does not have HDMI loop through, which I need to keep a monitor on the camera, the Mars 300 does. I am considering going the more expensive hollyland Mars hdmi transmitter 300.

John, I agree the Teradek is the best setup, Small HD has integrated monitors for this system, but is more than I need right now. If budget was no issue, or I was doing a big shoot with focus puller, Director, etc all needing a monitor, then the Teradek is the way to go.

I just saw that Hollyland has a new product called the Mars X. It's a transmitter will can transmit 1080p HDMI to up to 3 iOS and Android mobile devices. For $179, it's a great deal for the BMPCC4/6K and I guess for the UMP, I could probably use the SDI to HDMI mini converter in between on a rig (no sure but if anyone of you know if it will work please post). Anyway, there's a youtube video here and the link to B&H. It's a new release product so might take a while to order. I'm used the transmitter/receiver combo Hollyland products before and they're awesome transmitter. This is a more portable and cheaper option, and doesn't require monitors so your director and producers and just watch it on their mobile device instead of breathing at the back of your neck while trying to watch your (DP) monitor from behind you.

It’ll be in the next camera. ZCAM is pushing this subset of the industry and I’m grateful. However, I’d rather my next camera purchase be from Blackmagic.

It would be great if it could be used to livestream the feed directly from the phone. From my ignorance, it seems just a simple app or adding some coding to the manufactures app. You could even use and ATEM Mini as sender and broadcast from your phone. Imagine the possibilities with this one added feature.

More vendors are coming out with wireless video transmitters for sending output to mobile devices and the prices are very competitive. I'm still all for the Hollyland just because they've made very solid video transmitters/receivers and have been around for a while now. Here's another vendor on B&H. I just wish they also have an SDI in for cams like the UMP.

It is great that cams are starting to transmit as Que mentioned. My next camera will definitely transmit a signal for framing and pulling focus. I really hope it's a blackmagic. I believe the C100 does this via wifi and that is a much older camera than the BMs so it's not a tech issue. Hollylands are great but with the housing and wires they are just a more bulky solution than is really needed these days.

I agree the Hollyland model 300 and up are bulky and has more wires but it provides other functionalities as well. The Hollyland Mars-X are very light and small and actually has less lag than its bigger brothers the 300s. I've been using it on the P6K for a while now and it doesn't interfere much at all. The good thing is that I can have up to 4 IPads and/or SmartPhones going at the same time. As a director at times, I like to be able to view on my IPad without having to breath down the neck of the DP (joke intended).
