I would expect it to be just as good. But maybe it'll not focus as close, the 80-200 f4 Zeiss goes down to quite remarkable 3 feet.
What I don't like is the push-pull zoom for cine work.

Ok, that is a wonderful finding push and pull for zoom!, so there is no scope for introducing gear for remote FIZ , especially zooming,!

Yes, that's an advantage of the Leica zoom. And, BTW, just checked it: it's focusing about as close, around 1m.

Oh,u meant telescoping during zooming? It's because lacking of movement like international focusing, same thing happens to contax Zeiss zoom lens also, but in both Leica and Zeiss have separate zoom and focus rings,I just seen it!

You've misunderstood me: it's a disadvantage of the Zeiss zooms!
All of them have what is also called 'one-touch' zoom, which photographers like. It's unusable for filming. As you already wrote, you can't use gears for focus pulling or zooming.
That's why I own most of their primes, but only one zoom for photography, the 28-85mm. Very versatile, but I rarely use it for filming doc style. Optically, their zooms are excellent. The 100-300mm, for example, is better than many primes. But even the small 35-70mm is one-touch.

In short: you did the rigt thing when getting the Leica.

BTW, I like their 35-70mm, which I own in the form of a Minolta version (they made these for Leica). Excellent two-touch zoom, if you need something wider than your 80-200mm.

Thanks, but I can't understand the concept of one touch zoom!? where to touch? Then what for two broad rings over the barbell? And which one is the focus ring over the lens? please let me know, regards ashok

A one-touch zoom is also called push-pull since you have one ring to turn for focus and to slide back and forth for zoom. Not really usable for filming, other than run-n-gun situations.
Please have a look at the pictures of your future Leica lens and compare with these:

The attachment Zeiss_28-85mm.jpg is no longer available

And this is two-touch (actually three with aperture):

I love my C/Y 35-70 for run and gun, but I don't zoom with it and I don't love push pull....but it's a good range for me and has great IQ...

I had a very long, close look at the C/Y 35-70 vs the Minolta and found them so close in IQ that I went for the Minolta. But you can't fit that on EF, only on shorter mounts.

Are you referring to this one: Leitz Leica R Vario Elmar R 80-200mm f/4,5?
That's push-pull (aka one-touch) too.

Try to get this one: Leica 80-200 mm F/4.0. I was under the impression you are going for it, or not?

This is two touch.

Yeah, I got everything put in EF. Hoping Duclos reopens soon so I can send him my C/Y 100mm. Trying to decide if I need anything longer. My experience with the 35-70 kept me from getting longer zooms though.

My question about the 100mm was aimed at Chris.

To be clear about zooms: All zooms from the Zeiss Contax/Yashica line are push-pull designs and as such not usable in cinematography whenever you'd need to attach gear for pulling focus or zoom.

Leica R zooms are mixed, you can find both push-pull and two touch designs, as I already wrote.

The f2. I got it right after all the covid commotion hit and Duclos closed right when I got the lens. Hopefully, I'll be able to send it in soon for EF mount conversion and cine-mod. I'm on the fence about whether to get the 135 or the 180 next. I'm hoping to get out in June so I can start gathering some footage and see how much stretch I need and also what stability is like when you start getting that long on a crop sensor.

One aspect of buying Leitz lenses is that you are not dealing with 'users' but 'collectors' so prices the best examples can be ridiculous. There are plenty or resources out there that deal with Leitz so I suggest that's a better place to ask such questions. If it were me I'd buy a good example of a Canon EF 70-200 F2.8 MK2 but it's your money.....

Tripod, Apart from the Car Internal two shot, that was handheld, As you can see there is movement in the camera, I used Davinci Resolve stabilisation, but still there is noticeable camera movement, there was zero space in the back of the small vintage car to set up a tripod, I was very happy with the Lenses, They performed beautifully and I was happy with the log footage. There are tons of detail in the highlights but overall not super sharp, Obviously this was a External day scene so light wasn't a issue, For fill I did use one LED 500w.
Although these lenses are not fast, For day light scenes they perform very well.
I am only a beginner colourist so my grading isn't perfect. Thanks for checking out the test footage.

Hey, are we talking about Russian lenses over here? Weeeee.... :D

I JUST received modded lenses by Iron Glass (MIR, Helios and Jupiter-9 lenses in various focal lengths), a new, Ukraine company. These have been disassembled, cleaned up, declicked the aperture, added an anamorphic aperture (I opted for a non-flare version, I dislike anamorphic flares but I love the stretched bokeh), assembled again, put a permanent EF mount on them, beautifully smooth aperture and focus gears, and universal hood that accepts 77mm filters. They come in a very nice case, as you can see there. Price: about $2k for all that work (it took them over a week to finish the manual work).

I haven't shot anything with them yet, since they just arrived, half an hour ago. Very excited for some anamorphic-looking footage soon (note: you only get the anamorphic bokeh if you shoot wide open, where the lens is rather soft -- filmic-enough for my taste though).

I went out and shot a short film with the Iron Glass lenses I bought (the modded, not the rehoused). See two screenshots from today's BMPCC 4k shoot here (I think this was the Jupiter-9 85mm and the Helios 77m 50mm). Overall, extremely pleasing image, but there are issues of infinity focus with some of these lenses. Review soon on popular filmmaking news site.

Has anyone tried a Rubin-1 37-80mm f2.8? It’s the first Soviet zoom lens, apparently, and has a lot of character. I bought one cheap on eBay and hope to try it out in a couple weeks.
