New to this all

Hi Friends, my church was gifted a blackmagic studio camera. It has a 45-110mm lumix lens on it.

From about 60 feet we can't zoom out to get our whole stage on the recording. Do we need a small lens? I asked a camera guy and he said something about a sensor and how big the sensor is...I'm totally new to this and am trying to learn but cameras aren't something that I've been involved with.

From about 60 feet we are only able to get about 8 feet of coverage on our stage. Is that right?

The 45-175mm lens is more of a telephoto zoom lens, so it will give you a tighter shot of the action. If you are looking for a wider shot, you might look at something like the Panasonic Lumix 14-42mm PZ lens.

Just be aware that if you switch to a wider angle zoom lens like the 14-42mm, you will gain the ability to do wide shots, but lose the ability to do tighter shots (so the tightest shot possible on the 14-42mm will be pretty close to the widest shot possible on the 45-175mm lens).

Unfortunately there aren't a lot of zoom lens options for larger sensor cameras (Micro 4/3 and larger) that have really large zoom ranges (that go from really wide to really telephoto). For situations where you need a really large zoom range, you are often better off with a smaller sensor camcorder with a 10x or 20x optical zoom lens.

If 60 or 100mm is long enough, you could try the Panasonic Leica 12-60 or the Olympus 12-100 zooms.

Yes, those are good options as well, although they do not include power zoom support like the 14-42mm PZ and 45-175mm lenses do.
