ATEM Mini + iPhone?

PostWed Nov 20, 2019 11:18 am

Is there a solution for using an iPhone video input in the new ATEM MIni? ie. HDMI convertor that will work with the system?

Hello Reginald. You may connect the iPhone to the Mini using a lightening to HDMI adapter. This works well to play recorded videos and stills from the iPhone. Using the iPhone as a live camera may be a challenge as the overlays are present. There are apps that provide a clean feed which may be usable but in my testing they are not full screen. Some do not pass iPhone audio as well. It would be useful if others posted their observations here as well

I haven't tried it myself, but this looks promising:

Keep in mind that while it is technically possible to output HDMI video using something like Apple's Lightning Digital AV Adapter (https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD82 ... av-adapter), the video quality may not be the best.

The reason for this is that the early Lightning ports only supported USB 2.0 transfer speeds (480 Mbps) which is not sufficient bandwidth for uncompressed 1080p video (which requires 1.5 Gbps+ bandwidth). To get around this problem, the video sent from the device to the HDMI adapter is first compressed using H.264 inside the phone or tablet, then sent out over the Lightning port to the adapter, then decompressed back into uncompressed video sent out over the adapter's HDMI port.

This process can introduce compression artifacts and latency, so the quality may not be as good as you would get with an actual camera. More details here:

Try Filmic Pro. Go into the settings and under Device you can turn off all the items on the main monitor screen. It's the cleanest I've tested so far with the mini. There is a crop.

Hello folks,

We are trying to use the atem mini with samsung s8 android. Is there a video camera app out there that could hide the buttons on the phone screen completely while using the atem mini for filming in obs?

Thanks dor your time and support!

I used to use filmic pro but I came across this iOS app which works perfectly. I think it's the best option for using an iPhone camera if you connect using a lightening to HDMI adapter.

It's basically just a full screen camera app without any buttons or overlays (so no need for cropping) - but I like that the app still lets you control the camera with gestures like swipe/pinch to zoom, tap to focus etc.

Hello Stuart. Thanks for this. Many have spent a lot of time looking for such an app. Nothing to do with the app but as I was playing, make sure you disable notifications on your phone or everyone gets to see your messages pop up. Stay safe.

@stuartbale89 I am getting cropping (black bars) around all sides of my video coming from iphone11 into ATEM mini, using CleanCamera app. Were you able to avoid this somehow?

I was able to use an iPhone with CleanCamera without major issue. One problem I did find is that my HDMI extender did not like the HDMI signal coming out of the lighting dongle, also forgot to totally disable alerts!...

Hi there so we have found that Live:Air Solo allows us to output in true 1080p format. The app is free. We have done this so far with an iPad Pro via USB-C to HDMI adapter without issue

Perhaps I've overlooked something, but I'm having a beast of a time trying to get my iPad (2019, gen 7) to successfully serve as a video source. I've connected it to my ATEM Mini HDMI inputs (I've tried all 4), via Apple's lightning to HDMI adapter. I can't say what type/brand of HDMI cable I've been using is, or if that matters.

I'm using an iOS music app called NEWZIK, and have been attempting to transmit my OWN sheet music images (work that I have created) into the ATEM Mini, so I can easily switch to that for my online music lessons.

However, when I switch to that input, it comes up BLACK. I've read about HDCP, and that HDCP can be bypassed with several HDMI splitters. I bought a recommended one, but it did nothing. The ATEM mini input from my iPad is STILL black.

This is VERY frustrating. This functionality is an essential part of my online teaching program. I bypass the ATEM mini (with my iPad) when I'm using ZOOM, as that platform allows me access my Mac-connected iPad ... But, I can't rely exclusively on ZOOM. Audio is substandard (even with their so-called "enable original sound" feature) ... Apple's FaceTime actually has MORE reliable audio! ...

Anyway, ANY help to resolve this would be SO kindly appreciated ... I"ll offer a free online piano lesson as a gesture of appreciation!

I use an Iphone as one video feed in using apples Lightening to HDMI adaptor (which provides a power input at the same time, connected to a powerpack) I use the App: FILMIC pro - using the selfie camera and in the settings turning off all screen graphics. This all works fine except there will be NO SOUND. I use a separate mic feed in and it's fine.

It's something about apple's HDMI out - is only video

Would love to have FiLMiC Pro work with my iPhone 11 Pro Max, but as others have noted, it doesn't seem to provide full frame output (black frame around the picture). Another app called Live:Air Solo does, but I'd really want the fine color and other adjustments of FiLMiC Pro.

Hi:

I would like to use my iPhone 11 with the Mini Pro, however, when I plug it into the system, it shows me a horizontal picture on its side. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

So what I have done for our process is to attach an Apple TV to one of the HDMI inputs. Then, using one of two apps, I screen mirror an iPhone to that Apple TV. The two apps:

Shoot (Video only)
CameraVision (Video + Audio)

I have had great success with Shoot. I haven't really tried CameraVision, as I haven't needed audio yet. The great things about this solution:

Wireless Mobility. Combined with a handheld smartphone gimbal, I now have a mobile camera on the system that can go anywhere I have WiFi coverage. Significantly cheaper than wireless camera solutions out there.
Cheap. I am using a old Apple TV (HD, not 4K) and an old iPhone (6+). I wired the Apple TV to the existing switch that is already in place for the our system.
Full HD. The image quality is quite good, even with the older iPhone.
Easy Scalability. I can always go to 4K or better video whenever people are disposing of iPhones in the future.

Hello,

I use the same setup: Apple TV connected to a HDMI port on the Atem Mini and a wireless connection via AirPlay. On the iPhone I use FilmicPro and its clear HDMI-out feature. Works also via AirPlay. Very reliable. I have another iPhone connected with the Lightning-HDMI-adapter and FilmicPro.

OMG, thank you, RPC_NewYork! This worked absolutely flawlessly and saved me from having to purchase another $150-$300 camera for these kinds of streams.

You are a life (and money) saver! :D

It's something about apple's HDMI out - is only video

It's not the iPhone; it's a setting in Filmic Pro. In Filmic's settings, go to Hardware then turn on the switch labeled Audio Over HDMI.
