Markers to move with retiming

PostMon Aug 12, 2019 10:48 am

If a marker is set it holds its position while everything else is moving when using retime controls.
The behaviour is not intuitiv nor helping.
I often have to sync loosly matching audio sources to video. I do this by marking a spot in the video, then do the same in the audio clip, place a speedpoint on the video marker and drag it to match the audio marker.
Now the marker is still in its (now meaningless) original position, while the spot that was marked by it has moved.

Wanted behaviour: The marker moves along with the retimed clip.

Thanks
Guido

edit: you'd have to realise that the marker wouldn't necessarily be located on the frame you originally placed it on though, especially when speeding clips up as that frame may need to be skipped... Has this feature been implemented on another NLE?

I'm getting annoyed at the fact the markers are moving with the timeline! I put one at the top, then delete a clip and it's shifting forward.. how is that a marker anymore.. what's it marking if I put it on the root of the timeline, not the clip?

There's an option to turn marker ripple editing on or off.

For ref: "Timeline" > "Ripple Timeline Markers"

The problem is that this is either or either for all timeline markers. Ideally - I would actually like the ability to individually lock some specific markers on the timeline whilst in "Ripple Timeline Markers" mode, and allow others to ripple.

Locking individual timeline markers would be really great!

Another great feature regarding moving timeline markers would be being able to select clips AND timeline markers at the same time to move them together. (Maybe enabled with a toggle or in preferences)
I constantly find myself moving a bunch of clips to the right/left and then having to select the timeline markers, trying to align them to the moved clips again.
(Marking clips is not always an option, as they can change over time)

I just posted about this in a different thread. I find it hard to believe there is no way to group markers with clips, since surely this is how everyone organises scenes?

Is there any way to bump this feature in priority?

I have a very long clip where I placed dozens of markers before pulling it into the timeline.
Then I use the Retime Controls to speed up individual sections of the clip (using keyframes for retiming control). However, all my markers stay on the timeline during retiming. 'Ripple Timeline Markers' has no effect.

So I end up with lots of useless markers after the first retime.

Is there a way to work around this? Thank you.

Markers at the top of timeline and inside of clips don't seem impacted by the "ripple with timeline" and makes it useless to mark up specific frames in a clip only to have the markers break if the clip gets retimed.

So 3.5 years and a lot of other threads about markers later.
No progress it seems.
Blackmagic are you listening?

Any chance for some TLC for markers?

Another instance which is less clearcut but would be nice: I sometimes open up space in my timeline by using Select Clips Forward On All Tracks and then moving them over. This is essentially a ripple opening up space, but markers are not moved. Seems like in most cases you'd want them to move. Still, since this isn't technically a ripple, I can see some objecting to the suggestion.

Uh oh, looks like this is still a problem as of 18.1.4. Retiming doesn't keep the clip markers on their place, making them useless!

And I don't see any way to correct them all at once... wow, what a pain.

Honestly there should be two types of markers. Markers that are attached to a clip and will move when that clip is moved, and other markers that need to be isolated in place and never move.

Wouldn't this solve the issue then?

It does seem like a sensible enhancement to have a maker property (probably via a checkbox) that decides whether the marker will stick with content or time placement.

I'm sure then that one would want to select a group of markers and edit this property - probably in the Inspector. If markers were editable in the Inspector then one could change their color, keywords, etc there rather than needing a separate marker pop-up. Could be elegant.

For anyone needing a workaround, placing a speedpoint in a specific frame will lock the speedpoint to that frame, making it easier to work with retimed clips and maintain a reference point to a specific frame. It doesn’t stand out like a marker, but it won’t slide around to a different frame when stuff gets moved around it. It will move with the frame it’s locked to.

If you don’t want a speed change exactly on that frame, just keep the speeds on either side of it the same.

Would be wonderful to have an option to ripple clip markers within the speed change section of Inspector + in the Change Clip Speed dialogue.
