Bug? Selecting 3D object - navigation tools cover preview

PostFri Jun 26, 2020 11:50 pm

In the Fusion tab in Davinci Resolve, if you have the preview window showing MediaOut, but then click on a 3D object like a Merge3D or ImagePlane 3D, some additional tools appear at the top of the preview window. The problem is, they cover the top part of the preview. Even if you have "Fit" selected, the view does not adjust, so it's actually clipping the top of the window so you can't see your preview properly.

For me, when I zoom out a little bit using the mouse wheel, it zooms out quite a lot, more than I would like. If this is indeed a bug, it would be nice if the zoom selection of "Fit" would readjust the window scale when these 3D navigation tools appear.

Secondarily, is there a way to adjust the amount of zoom the mouse wheel changes by? I would like to make it less sensitive so I can make smaller adjustments for each scroll of the wheel.

You can shrink the size of the bar at the top by choosing to show text only, and after you select Scale To Fit, you can middle-click and slide the image down a little to see the top of the MediaOut in the viewer. It would be nice to be able to disable that bar when needed, but I've always worked around it.

You can also right-click in the viewer, and choose Scale>Custom Scale. Then you can enter the percentage you want for the zoom.

Ya I've had to scroll down to see the rest, but that's working around the bug. I know for a lot of regular footage it's not that big of a deal, but in my particular case I have some very small items at the very top and very bottom and I'm animating them. So often I'm not seeing them and they are still there but just covered by the bar.

I'll have to try your method of right clicking in the window itself and choosing Custom Scale. That sounds like a doable thing for now, but it would still be nice if the selection of "Fit" was an assurance that I'm always seeing the entire window. There have been several times where I thought my animation had gone off screen but it was just the silly bar.

Hmm... That menu used to be on the side of the viewer window instead of the top, so if it hid something, you could just widen the viewer slightly to uncover it. Since framing fixes the vertical AoV, that doesn't work for a toolbar fixed to the top or bottom of the window.

One more reason why the new UI needs to be reworked.

You can get finer control of the zoom level with MMB + LMB + drag. I'm not aware of any ability to control the granularity of the mousewheel's zoom, although it's possible that it's a hidden preference.

That's a great tip I didn't know about, and is the perfect thing to help me because holding down LMB + MMB + dragging let's me just barely edge that hidden part into view with minute control.

Before, when I would just use CTRL + Wheel, it would often drop 30% in scale and make the image way too small. And before I knew about this tip, I would scroll down to see the top, but then the bottom would be cut off. So this helps a lot thanks Bryan.

it would be nice if the zoom selection of "Fit" would readjust the window scale when these 3D navigation tools appear.

It's not the same thing, but I recently discovered there is now an option in the Fusion settings that allows for 'fit' to have margins. Which is weird, because why call it fit if it doesn't actually fit? But it does have the real world advantage that you can set the margin - even in pixels if I recall correctly - to make sure that if you press FIT that the tool bars don't cover up your preview. At least it works like this in the 2D views. Not a solution for all issues, but it has solved a couple of cases where I had missed something on the top of my image.
