I was just thinking how fast B&H can have this on their website ready to order from.

Whatever it is they are about to announce, I imagine it will be very close to shipping or will be officially “in stock” today. I will be on a socially-distanced set with our workhorse BMPCC4Ks while it happens, but hopefully I will be delighted to see, on the other side, the next evolution of Braw (Braw for FCPX, pretty please!), but I can’t imagine the hardware announcements won’t, a the very least, match Komodo’s feature set at a much better value— certainly, I’d imagine a large format option somewhere in the line, but I LOVE MFT so hopefully they continue to support it. Most of all, I hope this is an evolution toward better pixels, more DR, and not just more pixels and flippy screens.

See you all on the other side!

I don't think that would be it (as far as mount/sensor) because the m43 mount / lenses would cause vignetting so they wouldn't sell a product straight out of the box that makes unusable images.

I has a dream, BMD is going to announce a new 8k camera with 8k braw that will make it less taxing on medium to highend systems. It will be in a shape of a brick with the top first half having a swivel-up screen made from the new av 5 inch. It will be fullframe but available in other formats. You wont need to carry a fan with you. Cost about $4500.

Seems like Sony is better at selling ilusions and BM better at selling solid products?

Is Sony doing what Canon did, every year selling just a revision of the same product over and over without any significant improvements? Im not following...

BM use to do more than Canon did for several years with a simple firmware update...

JESUS CHRIST BLACKMAGIC, YOU JUST OUTDONE YOURSELF, who the heck thought that it would've been bm that's first to the 12k game? What a way to stick it to sunglasses man as well, and the ability to scale to 8k 6k 4k is massive as well, WTH.

The key here is a BM proprietary sensor. We’ll all see the benefits of that. Also, new color science! I’m excited to get it.

No mention of ProRes support, Im sure Blackmagic Raw is good and all but people still ask for ProRes, Blackmagic do you plan to support this for the lower resolutions at least?

12k though and the price is massively impressive. Well done Blackmagic.

Thanks, Grant, I guess I'm going to delay buying a new car, again!

Do I wish BM could tackle Canon/Sony quality auto-focus...yes...but if the dynamic range and color live up to the promise, this is the camera I shoot my next movie on. This is a camera I can see using for years.

PS. Doing away with bayer pattern sensor and going your own way. Ballsy. I like it! Again, I hope it lives up to the no compromise promise.

You can’t do 12K and ProRes. They’re not compatible for basic data rate reasons.

New camera announcements will be made on July 16

PostThu Jul 16, 2020 4:51 pm

This URSA Mini Pro 12K is clearly aiming for the film industry. Going to be harder for DOPs around the world to ignore it.

Glad to be done with the Bayer filter array. That’s a big step supporting RGB film needs. That heated thread about what BRAW is needs to be rethought as its usefulness is questionable with Colour Science 5 on the 12K sensor.

No more ProRes!

Game on!

I mean I would still LOVE to see a braw update for the p4k don't get me wrong, but holy crap blackmagic, you guys are proper insane, And the ability to downscale to lower resolution in braw sounds fantastic. Just overall very excited for the cameras everybody is putting out this year. Technology and innovation will always reign supreme.

I thought it was really cool and I have nothing but admiration for Grant and all at BM. It strikes me though that we are entering the equivalent of the Cold War arms race. I've been shooting 4K since RED Epic was launched and right now I only have one client who I deliver 4K to (and they deliver HD!).

I shoot both advertising and feature docs and I'm sure there will be times when the ability to reframe 12K in post would/will be really useful. BUT - and it's a big but, I personally would rather have seen a 6K Ursa with 16stops dynamic range and 300FPS at 4K or a restyled Pocket in more of a 'box'.

While I love the design innovation, behind the new sensor, moving camera/sensor design forwards is not all about resolution.

I will have to tip my hats off to BMD for up'ing on the competition with a 12K UMP BUT …

I don't need a 12K, or even an 8K, and barely use 6K with the Pocket 6K. Everything I shoot has been at 4K ~ 4.6K on the UMP G2 and 4K ~ 5.7K on the P6K. Barely will I deliver in more than 2.8K so there is enough resizing with a 4K capture. Maybe in 3-4 years from now the 8K and 12K will make sense. So, no to this new product. If I ever need to use this camera, I will just rent it for the project. I see this to only be purchased by larger production houses and rental stores... or maybe by individuals who are silly enough to just show off but no sense of what to do with it. Maybe a few will.

The entry presentation was disappointing. BMD has a problem with supporting their existing camera based and users thereof. They like to come up with the latest and greatest which is good, but they leave older (and even not too old) products in the dust. Nothing on the UMP G2, nor the Pocket 4K or 6K. No new firmware. What a joke.

Well, that's it then. I doubt the 12K will have any market success. There's more interesting cameras for the professional masses that's on this forum, and other forums --- the Red Komodo, the E-Cams, Sony, Canon, and of course the BMD Pocket 4/6K and the UMP G2. I'm just worried that folks who are not going to buy into a 12K UMP will also now consider the UMP G2 and the BMPCC4/6K as unsupported by BMD will look into other vendor options and there will be less interest and market share for BMD cameras. I think this is a bad move by BMD, putting all their eggs on one 12K UMP. But it's all said and done.

I'm not buying the 12K at all and will still be shooting with the BMPCC 6K and UMP G2. Unfortunately, I just saw my investments tanks this morning. :(

I don't know.... It's a bit mystifying. Are seven, eight and nine figure productions going to hire a $10K camera which *can't* be as robust or as widely supported as the current industry workhorses?

I think it's more a place-marker ... until the technology trickles into cameras more in line with the price of the G2 and economies of scale set in.

If you're using K's for reframing in post as a primary reason, then you need to rethink your DoP skillset. Boys and girls, if you want to be a top dog someday, learn to frame right on camera. At least, add it to your list of skill building activities.

You don't need 12K for Big Screen or TV demos.

High End TV demo guys would love to shoot their oozing honey shots in 12K. Also nature and landscape people I'm sure.

Not to mention being able to add a 3X zoom to your footage and still be at 4K. The next Blue Planet series will be insane!!

Unfortunate and sheer lack of creative prowess. As you said, just oozing honey shots, and I'll add no value at all. A majority of the world's household today only have 1080p TVs (lucky enough), and even though 4K is cheap, it will take another 5-8 years to replace them.

I don't think anyone is talking about 'reframing' in post to make up for 'poor' skills or to be 'top dog'. I did two shoots last week that due to Covid distancing, and not wanting to be on a long lens, we 'reframed' in post.

With 8K consumer televisions available, but currently using upscaled footage, of course it will be very interesting to see when Netflix will publish a standard for 8K television. 12K sensor to deliver 8K will have a place in the market. It may not apply to everyone but this is the stake in the ground for BMD (similar to RED’s 4K for $4K so many years ago that got them on cinema filmmakers’ radar) that may elevate BMD’s place. Perhaps some of the higher cost will also elevate quality control and customer support.

I don't know.... It's a bit mystifying. Are seven, eight and nine figure productions going to hire a $10K camera which *can't* be as robust or as widely supported as the current industry workhorses?

I think it's more a place-marker ... until the technology trickles into cameras more in line with the price of the G2 and economies of scale set in.
most productions are in 2K
