What am I doing wrong? Blackmagic eGPU

PostWed Jul 29, 2020 10:44 am

Hey Guys,
I've bought a Blackmagic eGPU a few days ago and it arrived yesterday.
I've plugged it in and installed the eGPU Update.
After that I had to update my Thunderbolt 3 Firmware, which I did.
Started my Mac again and the eGPU disconnects all the time.
Shut down Mac, clean install Catalina, start in recovery mode, disable T2 Safety, reboot, install eGPU update again, reboot, update Thunderbolt 3 Firmware again and still disconnection all the time.
What am I doing wrong?

Mac mini 2018
Mac OS 10.15.6
3,2GHz 6-Core i7
32GB RAM

Thunderbolt 3 Firmware Version: 47,4
Link Controller Firmware: 1.34.0
eGPU Firmware: 50,3

Also tested without any other USB-C device and all Thunderbolt ports.

Thanks for your help!

Try a clean install of Mojave. It works perfectly fine for me.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

Studio 18.6.5, MacOS 13.6.5
MacBook M1 Pro, 16 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM and iPhone 15 Pro

Thanks! I've tried to install Mojave yesterday, but it wasn't possible the "normal" way, because my Mac was delivered with Catalina already.

I've bought a new Thunderbolt 3 Cable, since the original one was too short anyway.
The Cable was delivered a few hours ago. Plugged it in and now everything works fine.

The Problem was basically that Apple/Blackmagic delivered a broken Thunderbolt 3 Cable with the eGPU.
Don't know how that can happen, but my problem was solved!

Over the years, I've seen quite a few cables going bad (or being DOA).
